Fuel cells are known as eco - friendly energy facilities that can use heat energy and electric energy at the same time. Fuel cells are classified according to the temperature and material used, and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is relatively high temperature ($700-800^{\circ}C$). SOFC requires a hot box consisting of a high temperature stack, a reformer, a burner, and the heat exchangers in order to use energy efficiently. The hot box needs to maintain heat insulation performance at high temperature to reduce heat loss. However, Fibrous insulation, which is widely used, needs to be improved because it has a disadvantage that the thermal conductivity is rapidly increased due to the increase of temperature. Therefore, this study was carried out to develop a thermal insulation, which is applied to multiple layers insulation (MLI) technic, that can be used under SOFC operating conditions and prevent a drastic drop in thermal conductivity at high temperature. The developed insulation is consist of a thermally conductive material, a spacer, and a reflective plate. The thermal conductivity of the insulation was measured by in the thermal conductivity measuring device at high temperature range. As a result, it was confirmed that the developed layers insulation have an good thermal conductivity (0.116 W/mK) than fibrous insulation (0.24 W/mK) as a radiation shielding effect at a high temperature of 1,173 K.
The thermal properties of insulation material are essential to develop a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable to be operated at around liquid nitrogen temperature. Unlike metallic materials, nonmetallic materials have a high thermal resistance; therefore special attention needs to be paid to estimate heat flow correctly. Thus, we have developed a precise instrument for measuring the thermal conductivity of insulating materials over a temperature range from 40 K to near room temperature using a cryocooler. Firstly, the measurement of thermal conductivity for Teflon is carried out for accuracy confirmation. For a supplied heat flux, the temperature difference between warm and cold side is measured in steady state, from which the thermal conductivity of Teflon is calculated and compared with published result of NIST. In addition, the apparent thermal conductivity of Polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP) is presented and its temperature dependency is discussed.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are among one of the promising technologies for efficient and clean energy. SOFCs offer several advantages over other types of fuel cells under relatively high temperatures (600℃ to 800℃). However, the thermal behavior of SOFC stacks at high operating temperatures is a serious issue in SOFC development because it can be associated with detrimental thermal stresses on the life span of the stacks. The thermal behavior of SOFC stacks can be influenced by operating or material properties. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the effects of the thermal conductivity of each component (anode, cathode, and electrolyte) on the thermal behavior of samarium-doped ceria-based SOFCs at intermediate temperatures. Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate SOFC operation at 600℃. The temperature distributions and gradients of a single cell at 0.7 V under different thermal conductivity values are analyzed and discussed to determine their relationship. Simulations reveal that the influence of thermal conductivity is more remarkable for the anode and electrolyte than for the cathode. Increasing the thermal conductivity of the anode by 50% results in a 23% drop in the maximum thermal gradients. The results for the electrolyte are subtle, with a ~67% reduction in thermal conductivity that only results in an 8% reduction in the maximum temperature gradient. The effect of thermal conductivity on temperature gradient is important because it can be used to predict thermal stress generation.
The effect of (1) phonon dispersion in thermal conductivity model and (2) the differentiation of group velocity and phase velocity for Ge is examined. The results show drastic change of thermal conductivity regardless of using same relaxation time model. Also the contribution of transverse acoustic (TA) phonon and longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon is changed by considering more rigorous dispersion model. Holland model underestimates the scattering rate for high frequency TA, so misleading conclusion, i.e. TA is dominant heat transfer mode at high temperature. But the actual reduction of thermal conductivity is much larger than the estimation by Holland model and high frequency TA is no more dominant heat transfer mode. Another heat transfer mechanism may exist for high temperature. Two possible explanations are (1) high frequency LA by Umklapp scattering and (2) optical phonon.

The temperature distribution in the pellet was obtained from beginning the general heat conduction equation. The thermal conductivity of pellet used the SIMFUEL data that made clear the effect of burnup on the thermal conductivity degradation. Since the pellet rim acts as the thermal barrier to heat flow. the pellet was subdivided into several rings in which the outer ring was adjusted to play almost the same role as the rim. The local burup in each ring except the outer ring was calculated from the power depression factor based on FASER results. whereas the rim burnup at the outer ring was achieved by the pellet averaged burnup based on the empirical relation. The rim changed to the equivalent Xe film so the predicted temperature shooed the thermal jump across the rim. The observed temperature profiles depended on linear heat generation rate. fuel burnup. and power depression factor. The thermal conductivity degradation modelling can be applied to the fuel performance code to high burnup fuel,
A thermal conductivity correlation has been proposed which can be applied to high turnup fuel by considering both of thermal conductivity with turnup across fuel pellet and additional degradation at pellet rim due to very high porosity. In addition, a correlation has been developed that can estimate the porosity of rim region as a function of rim burnup under the assumptions that all the produced fission gases are retained in the in porosity and threshold pellet average burnup required for the formation of rim region is 40 MWD/㎏U. Rim width is correlated to rim burnup using measured data. For the RISO experimental data obtained at pellet average turnup of 43.5 MWD/㎏U for three linear heat generation rates of 30, 35 and 40 ㎾/m, radial temperature distributions ore calculated using the present correlation and compared with the measured ones. This comparison shows that the present correlation gives the best agreement with the measured data when it is combined with the HALDEN's correlation for thermal conductivity considering its degradation with burnup. Another comparison with the HALDEN's measured fuel centerline temperature as a function of burnup at 25 ㎾/m up to about 44 MWD/㎾U also suggest that the present correlation yields the best agreement when it is combined with the HALDEN's thermal conductivity.
Investigators have been perplexed with the thermal phenomena behind the recently discovered nanofluids, fluids with unprecedented stability of suspended nanoparticles although huge difference in the density of nanoparticles and fluid. For example, nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids. Traditional conductivity theories such as the Maxwell or other macroscale approaches cannot explain why nanofluids have these intriguing features. So in this paper, we devise a theoretical model that accounts for the fundamental role of dynamic nanoparticles in nanofluids. The proposed model not only captures the concentration and temperature-dependent conductivity, but also predicts strongly size-dependent conductivity. Furthermore, we physically explain the new phenomena for nanofluids. In addition, based on a proposed model, the effects of various parameters such as the ratio of thermal conductivity of nanofluids to that of a base fluid, volume fraction, nanoparticle size, and temperature on the thermal conductivities of nanofluids are investigated.

The thermal conductivity of Ag and Ag alloys at low temperature (10~110 K) were evaluated by direct measurement technique. It was observed that thermal conductivity decreased with increasing the content of alloying elements such as Mg and Cu. Thermal conductivity of pure Ag tape at 20 K was measured to be 2794 W/m$\cdot$K. On the other hand, the corresponding values of Ag/Al tape and Ag/Al/sus315L tape were 1235 and 352 W/m$\cdot$K, respectively, indicating 2 to 8 times lower than that of pure Ag tape.

Thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of high purity niobium and tantalum refractory rare metals were investigated tn evaluate the physical purity. Higher purity niobium and tantalum metals showed lower hardness due to smaller solution hardening effect. Temperature dependence of electrical resistivity showed a typical metallic behavior. Remarkable decrease in electrical resistivity was observed for a high purity specimen at low temperature. However, thermal conductivity increased for a high purity specimen, and abrupt increase in thermal conductivity was observed at very low temperature, indicating typical temperature dependence of thermal conductivity for high purity metals. It can be known that reduction of electron-phonon scattering leads to increase in thermal conductivity of high purity niobium and tantalum metals at low temperature.
