  • Thermal bubbles find their diverse application areas in the MEMS (MicroElectroMechanial Systems) technology, including bubble jet printers, microactuators, micropumps, etc.. Especially, microactuators and micropumps, which use a microbubble growing by a controlled heat input, frequently involve mechanical and thermal interaction of the bubble with a solid structure, such as a cantilever beam and a membrane. Although the concept is experimentally verified that an internal pressure of the bubble can build up high enough to deflect a thin solid plate or a beam, the physics of the entire process have not yet been thoroughly explored. This work reports the experimental study of the growth of a thermal bubble while deflecting a thin cantilever beam. A physical model is presented to predict the elastic response of the cantilever beam based on the experimental measurements. The scaling law constructed through this work can provide a design guide for micro- and nano-systems that employ a thermal bubble for their actuation/pumping mechanism.

  • Thermal bubble formation is a fundamental process in nucleate boiling heat transfer and many microelectromechanical thermal systems. One of the established facts is that heterogeneous nucleation is originated from vapors trapped inside cavities. Based on this, we performed an experimental study on the formation of thermal bubbles from microcavity fabricated by microfabrication technology on a copper plate. The cavity was filled with aluminum particles to enhance thermal bubble formation. We observed the thermal bubble behaviors, such as bubble incipience, diameter, frequency and coalescence during nucleate boiling. The experimental data showed that the superheat required to trigger the bubble formation was significantly reduced when the cavity was filled with microparticles. We found that the initial increase of superheat led to the increase of both the departure diameter and frequency while the further increase of superheat caused multiple bubbles to coalesce resulting in the decrease of departure frequency.

  • The air-bubble sheet has been widely used to wrap fragile products for long-distance transportation. The further usage of the air-bubble sheet as a thermal-insulation material for the reduction of the thermal conductivities of window systems has occurred because of its low price, in addition to its thermal-conductivity properties. In this study, the thermal performances of a variety of commercial air-bubble sheets according to various applications were evaluated. The experiments were performed with single-glazed and double-glazed windows and three types of air-bubble sheets of different air volumes. U-values are used and were calculated for the determination of the thermal performances that are based on the KS F 2278. The maximum decrease of the U-value was measured as 1.092 when a sheet was attached onto the frame of single-glazed window. The square-like air-bubble sheet that contains the largest air volume shows the highest thermal-resistance value. Double layers of the air-bubble sheets show better performances than those of the single layers on both sides of the windows.

  • Nucleate boiling experiments on heating surface of constant wall temperature were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition of heating surface and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous experimental results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later (thermal) respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. In the initial growth region including surface tension controlled, transition and inertia controlled regions as divided by Robinson and Judd, the bubble growth rate showed that the bubble radius was proportional to $t^{2/3}$ regardless of working fluids and heating conditions. And in the thermal growth region as also called asymptotic region, the bubble showed a growth rate that was proportional to $t^{1/5}$, also. Those growth rates were slower than the growth rates proposed in previous analytical analyses. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool condition. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).

  • The characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. In the present study, a thermal-infrared camera and high speed CCO camera were used to measure their temperature and local rising velocity, respectively. Heat transfer from bubble surface to water is largely completed within z=10mm from the nozzle, and then the temperature of bubble surface reaches that of water rapidly. The rising velocity of bubble was calculated for two different experimental conditions: 1) bubble flow without kinetic energy 2) with kinetic energy. Bubble flow without kinetic energy starts to undergo the effect of inertia force 10cm away from the nozzle. Whereas, kinetic energy is dominant before 30 cm away from the nozzle in bubble flow, but after this point, kinetic energy and inertial force are applied on bubble flow at the same time.

  • The droplet ejection process driven by an evaporating bubble in a thermal inkjet printhead is investigated by numerically solving the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy. The phase interfaces are tracked by a level set method which is modified to include the effect of phase change at the interface and extended for multiphase flows with irregular solid boundaries. The compressibility effect of a bubble is also included in the analysis to appropriately describe the bubble expansion behaviour associated with the high pressure caused by bubble nucleation. The whole process of bubble growth and collapse as well as droplet ejection during thermal inkjet printing is simulated without employing a simplified semi-empirical bubble growth model. Based on the numerical results, the jet breaking and droplet formation behaviour is observed to depend strongly on the bubble growth and collapse pattern. Also, the effects of liquid viscosity, surface tension and nozzle geometry are quantified from the calculated bubble growth rate and ink droplet ejection distance.

  • Recently, 3D printing technology is a hot issue in various industrial fields. According to the user's application, it allows for the free form fabrication method to be utilized in a wide range. The powder based fusion technique is one of the 3D printing methods. When using this method it is possible to apply the various binder jetting techniques such as piezo, thermal bubble jet, dispenser and so on. In this paper, a multi thermal bubble ink jet was integrated for jetting of powder binding material and developing a power fused 3D printing system. For high quality 3D printing parts, it needs an analysis and evaluation of the behavior of the thermal bubble ink jet head. In the experiment, a correlation between jetting binder quantity and layer thickness of powder was investigated, and a 3D part model was fabricated, which was used by measuring the scale factor.

  • We calculate the evolution of multiple supernova (SN) explosions inside a pre-exiting bubble blown up by winds from massive stars, using one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations including radiative cooling and thermal conduction effects. First, the development of the wind bubble driven by collective winds from multiple stars during the main sequence is calculated. Then multiple SN explosion is loaded at the center of the bubble and the evolution of the SN remnant is followed for $10^6$ years. We find the size and mass of the SN-driven shell depend on the structure of the pre-existing wind bubble as well as the total SN explosion energy. Most of the explosion energy is lost via radiative cooling, while about 10% remains as kinetic energy and less than 10% as thermal energy of the expanding bubble shell. Thus the photoionization and heating by diffuse radiation emitted by the shock heated gas is the most dominant form of SN feedback into the surrounding interstellar medium.

  • Flow motion and variation of thermal field around a bubble which attached at the upper cooled solid wall in a $B\dot{e}nard$ convection flow is studied experimentally using thermo-sensitive liquid-crystal tracers and image processing for flow visualization and analysis. The air is injected gradually by $0.1m\ell$ to make the bubble. As the growing of the bubble in a $B\dot{e}nard$ convection flow, the variation of temperature field and surface tension along the bubble, which in turn cause to change the thermal field patterns and the flow direction and patterns. 6 cells flow pattern is transformed into diverse flow pattern. At the large size of a bubble, it's only conduction mechanism under the region of the bubble because of low Ra number 1137, but the convection flow both sides of the bubble leads to another convection flow in the bubble influence area which has been remained stable stagnation.

  • Nucleate pool boiling experiments for R11 under a constant wall temperature condition were carried out. A microscale heater array was used for the heating and the measurement of high temporal and spatial resolution by the Wheatstone bridge circuit. Very sensitive heat flow rate data were obtained by the control for the surface condition with high time resolution. The measured heat flow rate shows a discernable peak at the initial growth stage and reaches an almost constant value. In the thermal growth region, bubble shows a growth proportional to $t^{\frac{1}{5}}$. The bubble growth behavior is analyzed with a dimensionless parameter to compare with the previous results in the same scale. As the wall superheat increases, the departure diameter and the departure time increase, and the waiting time decreases. But the asymptotic growth rate is not affected by the wall superheat change. The effect of the wall superheat is resolved into the suggested growth equation. Dimensionless parameters of time and bubble radius characterize the thermal growth behavior well, irrespective of wall condition. The comparison between the result of this study and the previous results shows a good agreement at the thermal growth region. The quantitative analysis for the heat transfer mechanism is conducted with the measured heat flow rate behavior and the bubble growth behavior. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble is about twice as much as the instantaneous heat flow rate supplied from the wall.
