  • Traumatic brain injury is an insult to the brain caused by an external physical force, that may product a diminished or altered state of consciousness, which results in impairment of cognitive abilities or physical function. The purposes of this study were to overview injury mechanism and neural plasticity of traumatic brain injury. Injury mecanism includes exitotoxicity, production free radical, inflammation and apoptosis. Furthermore traumatic brain injury has protective mechanisms includes production of neural growth factor, heat shock protein, anti-inflammatory cytokines.

  • Although there are still many technical difficulties to be overcome, recent advances in the molecular and cellular biology of gene transfer have made it likely that gene therapy will soon start to play an increasing role in clinical practice. However. safety issues are raised from vector system. It is not clear whether it is safe to incorporate genes into nuclear DNA. Little is known about the antigenicity of gene product which the immune system is encountering. In this review, some safety-related topics are introduced and discussed.

  • Flavonoids are well-known anti-inflammatory agents that exert their effects via a variety of mechanisms including antioxidative action, inhibition of eicosanoid metabolizing enzymes and regulation of theexpression of proinflammatory molecules. In this review, synthetic approaches to obtain more useful flavonoid derivatives are summarized. Human clinical trials of flavonoid therapy are discussed. Through continual investigation to identify more potent and comparable flavonoids, new anti-inflammatory flavonoid therapy will be successfully launched, especially for the treatment of chronic inflammatory disorders.

  • tWith the development of the third-generation gene scissors, CRISPR-Cas9, concerns are being raised about ethical and social repercussions of the new gene-editing technology. In this situation, this article explores the legislation and interpretation of the positive laws in South Korea. The BioAct does not specify and regulate 'gene editing' itself. However, assuming that genetic editing is used in the process of research and treatment, we can look to the specific details of the regulations for research on humans as well as gene therapy research in order to see how genetic editing is regulated under the BioAct. BioAct differentiates the regulation between (born) humans and embryos etc. and the regulation differ entirely in the manner and scope. Moreover, due to the fact that gene therapy products are regarded as drugs, they fall under different regulations. The Korean Pharmacopoeia Act put stringent sanctions on clinical trials for gene therapy products and the official Notification "Approval and Examination Regulations for Biological Products, etc." by Food and Drug Safety Administration may be applied to gene editing for gene therapy purposes.

  • Fermented materials have been used for long time around the world and have been researched according to the excellent effect in the part of medical and food industry. However, when such materials are applied on skin, because of the skin barrier, the most effective ingredients are poorly absorbed. The absorption of the skin is exceedingly limited and the method of increasing skin absorption needs special procedures. The micro-needle therapy is a method used to improve the absorption of drug (solution) in the skin which is called "natural skin rejuvenation therapy". This therapy uses micro-needle which is equipped with very thin, delicate needles smaller than a 0.07 mm thick hair. During this therapy, the micro-needle makes small holes and helps absorb the solution into the skin. This is a very excellent therapy in skin absorption. It can be used in wide regions of the skin without any side effects and no recovery time. In 2007, the micro-needle is permitted to personal care. However, the solutions have not yet been developed professionally, and such skill is needed.

  • Our records include two cases of DIC in snakebite patients. One patient, who was 48-years old, was bitten in his left ankle 3 days before admission to our hospital. Initial symptoms were painful swelling, extensive ecchymosis, and persistent bleeding at the bite site. He visited and was admitted to a local hospital, but his condition did not improve with supportive care that included a single dose of antivenin. He was transferred to our hospital. His condition was compatible with DIC. We tried multi-dose antivenin therapy and blood product transfusion. At the seventh hospital day, the patient's symptoms were completely resolved. The other patient, who was 75 years old, was bitten in his right thumb. Initial symptoms were painful swelling of the right arm and persistent bleeding at the bite site, and within minutes of hospital admission, the patient experienced massive hematochezia. We peformed laboratory tests, the results of which were compatible with DIC, and the next day a sigmoidscopic examination showed ischemic colitis. We administered multi-dose antivenin therapy and blood product tranfusion. At the third hospital day mild anemia still existed, but the patient's clinical condition was improved. No signs or symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding were observed. In these two cases, multi-dose antivenin therapy and transfusion effectively resolved symptoms of DIC. Platelet concentrate transfusion was required only for acute thrombocytopenia. After resolution of DIC, platelet counts were returned to normal ranges within a few days. The authors propose that multidose antivenin therapy and coagulation factor transfusion might be useful for improving coagulopathy in snakebite patients.

  • Objective of this study is to provide basic information for developing more differentiated and targeted forest healing policy and Korean medical healing programs grounded on consumer preference for forest based Korean medical healing tourism products. The internet survey(CAWI) by percentage quota sampling with 400 Seoulite ages over 30 by the age, area, and gender was conducted, and 317 samples were used for a final analysis. 61.5% of the Seoulite associated 'forest bath/walking in the woods/tree' with an image of a forest based Korean medical healing tourism product, and preference for the product and the intention to use were positive at the percentages of 72.9% and 67.5%, respectively. Preferred areas were Seoul/Gyeonggi-do(53.5%) and Gangwon-do(38.8%). 'Stress solving and refreshment', 'taking a forest bath and a walk', and 'maintaining and promoting health' were the main purposes of the use. As for a therapy, 'walking therapy' was most preferred, and 'ergotherapy' was the next. First priority as for a use facility was 'healing trail', and 'professional medical facility' ranked second. Although important decision attributes were ' cost of use', 'food', and 'friendliness of medical staff', all the other sets of attributes related to use convenience, quality of medical service and tourism activities also recorded high, which forecasts higher consumer expectation for the product. As the result showing differences in consumer preference by the demographic segmentation, differentiated and segmented consumer needs should be considered when planing and managing a product. The scope of the study is limited to a demographic segmentation which is a basic stage of understanding consumer preference, therefore more detailed future researches on complicated and multi-dimensional consumer needs are required.
