  • This paper summarized the changes in elementary school mathematics education that took place at the national level during the Enlightenment Elementary Mathematics Education period from 1876 to 1910. For this purpose, we divided the enlightenment period into three periods and examined major changes related to elementary school mathematics education at each period. The necessity of arithmetic education began to be recognized before the reform of the Taoist reform, and arithmetic education became a national curriculum in the beginning of the Taoist reform period. Particularly, during the reforming period of the Gap, the elementary mathematics textbooks of mixed Korean and Chinese were published. In the period when the intervention of the Japanese imperialism began, the arithmetic education has been reduced or weakened in accordance with the education policy of 'simple' and 'use'. It is also remarkable that an arithmetic book for elementary teachers was published at this time.

Borrowed words which came from Japan are almost related to Japan's traditional dress like Gudu, Gabang, Kimono, Nemaki, Ebijahagama, Hagama, Sirusibanden, Doriachi, Dombi, Sarumada, Sseumeeri, Doriachi, and Mombbe. Borrowed words originated in western countries are like Frock coat, Bonnet, Necktie, Chapeau, Scotch, Homespun, Chamois, Skirt, Spring Coat, Ribbon, Silk hat, Panama hat, Handbag, Pajama, Shawl, Apron, Cuffs, Pocket, Handkerchief, Morning coat, Combination-one piece, Rain Coat, Burberry, and Permanent, etc. Borrowed words came from Japan is Lasa[raxa], jokki[jaket], Les[lace], Veludo[velvet], Bbanss[pants], Oba[overcoat], Meliyas[medias], Shass[shirt], Manto[manteau], and Sebiro[civil clothes]. In terms of items, a lot of words related to men's suit and women's dress, accessory, etc. It confirms that men's dress was westernized in the whole part compared to partially westernized women's one. • This article focuses on the period from the beginning of Twentieth, the period commonly regarded as the Enlightenment Period in Korea. Questioning Daehan-Sin-Gygi( 問答大韓新地誌) textbook consists of contents of physical geography aimed at rational and objective perception of the nature, within the frame of Sirak(實學) and Progressive Thoughts. In terms of contents organization, there are too wide range of facts and knowledge covered, with mechanical imitation of statement style of systematic and regional approach. Particularly, Geography textbook in this period attached greater importance to contents of physical geography than any other times. It is possible to conclude that real outcomes of geography education at the time contributed significantly to enlightenment of people and integration of the society. I consider that statement style of question-response used at the time is very worth-while.

  • Hair style is an expression of beauty for individuals and at the same time a clear social representation. It may be regarded as a means of knowing social recognition about social values and groups of the moment. The hair style clearly discriminated so-called the new woman, emerged during Chosun's modernization, and the old woman. Thus the purpose of this study is to examine changes in social recognition about the behavioral style of the new woman by relating them with women' s movements and with changes in female education policies. Results of the study can be described as follows. First, the new women in the 1920s were evaluated positive as those who were leading struggles against Japan and enlightenment campaigns. But between the 1920s and the 1930s, those women were thought to be negative in that they were appearance-oriented, extravagant and sticking themselves to reality. Second, how a variety of social figures recognized short-hair was determined here through reviewing the mass media of the 1920s. At that time, some men were positive about short-hair like feminists while others denied the convenience of the hair style in life and were negative about the new women's individualism and pursuance of luxurious appearance. Third, there were both positive and negative social recognitions about short-hair in the 1930s. which were supported by the mass media of that time.
