This study intended to present a new direction of differentiated and innovative furniture design for small living space overcoming the uniformity of conventional small living. In order to achieve these goals, a new piece of furniture with multi functions useful for such small space has been designed and explained in this study. This new type multi-functional furniture can be utilized as kitchen, dining table, home bar or office stand depending on the user's necessity. In particular, it provides more adaptability to changing life and spatial availabilities for small living space in terms of space division, separation and fusion features. Based on the needs of small living space brought by social changes, the conventional concept of small living space, which divides space by partitions or walls, should be changed into flexible perception of space. Also, this research proposed the features of furniture design for functional shifts in terms of its functional, structural, and systematical aspects. In this respect, space can be regarded as a variable place and the image of space can be differently appreciated by means of shift, functional transition and mobility. That is, small living space can be perceived as kitchen, living space or working space at the same time. In conclusion, the versatile use of limited space can be a solution to the issues related to small living space; the convertible and movable furniture called F4 Island presented in this study can transform such spatially limited space into a space with multiple functions to meet the requirements of its residents.

This study aims for the research of the local circulation in a kitchen to minimize the kitchen work load and to produce a more efficient kitchen system. This study analized the real behavior and circulation in the kitchen area and this focused on the kitchen of the working women in a dual-income family. Through the analisis, this study raised an idea that the work in the kitchen area is not in sequence, but random while the tradition idea of the kitchen system is arranged by cooking programe. Therefore, this became a reason to increase the kitchen work load ratter than the layout of the kitchen system, the cooking style and menu affected on the more kitchen load. To reduce the kitchen work load, the designeer should shorten the circulation in the kitchen area. And this is possible through the decrease distance between the sink and a kiting zone and through the wide kitchen table which is between the sink and a kiting zone.

The purpose of this study is to investigate household Items and storage of kitchen and to suggest basic data for the desirable storage space. For the study, the samples were taken from 30 families living in 3-bedroom apartment. The personal interview and physical trace method were used to analyze the types and quantities of household Items and the storage conditions in kitchen furniture. The result was as follows : first, a total of 210 types of household Items were found in the kitchen, and the items ranged widely in purpose, from cooking and dining tools, hygiene products, and general household goods, which indicate that a variety activities in addition to cooking and eating are performed in the kitchen. Second, regarding the quantities of household Items, the majority of them were used for cooking and dining. Also the types and quantities of household Items varied according to the age of the child. Third, regarding storage of household Items in the kitchen by furniture type, the majority of the items were stored in the wall cabinets, base cabinets, and countertops and, as a storage method, simple 'placement' was most common. This suggests there is lack of three-dimensional storage in the kitchen. The findings show activities and storage in the kitchen space vary according to the age of the child, and household Items are stored by using several common methods.

The purpose of this study is to develop furniture design for the apartment based on the market research of furniture and interior design, and the survey on the design preference of hte apartment residents. The apartment furniture in living rooms, bed rooms and kitchens are designed according to the design concepts of preference image of apartment sizes: that of mid-size apartment(34pyung type) is Natural Modern image, large-size(59pyung type) is Korean Modern image, and extra large-size(81pyung type) is Classic Modern image. The living furniture is designed smaller in order to use the space flexibly, and the built-in furniture of bed rooms is designed simply like the wall of a room to be felt larger, basically. The furniture in kitchen is composed of the storage zone by high cabinets and the display zone by open shelves.

Korea Furniture design development process is repeated a number of changes by the change of residence and type of market demand derived from the process of industrialization. The modernization process of industrialization advances by large-scale population moves to the city to urbanization proceeds rapidly. Housing problems are concentrated in cities and sparked the furniture industry, furniture design by changes in marketing concepts that appear in the industrialization phase, growth must necessarily accommodate the needs of consumers. Including kitchen furniture, living room furniture and master bedroom furniture has been sensitively adapted changes in the structure of these houses, particularly structural changes Apartments. Starting in the 1990s, jumping over furniture industry has adapted quickly to the market demand, changes in marketing concepts. Furniture industry is growing market share in most of the country, but the entire industry had to undergo a competitive marketing overheating due to excessive supply in excess of market demand since the mid-1990s. Changes in furniture design in this process was the change in furniture design more than the change of the residential structure. The study industrial development and marketing concepts are changing to construct a model to track the changes varied styles and time changes affect whether the main furniture design.

The purpose of this study was to design rural kitchen furnitures. Thirty seven rural houses were selected for this study. Present and past uses of space for cooling and dining were investigated by a field survey method. The Major findings were that ; 1) Sink, mixing, and range centers should be installed in rural kitchen 2) The depth of working center, 550-600mm was recommended. And working space cold be added by 150mm in depth and 100mm in height. The height of working center, 820mm-850mm was recommended . The minimum width of sink was 900 mm and the optimum one was 1200mm. The optimum width of mixing center and cooking center were 600m respectively 3) In the low ceiling of kitchen or the wooden structure of kitchen, a wall cabinet without upper cupboard was recommended. On the basis of the results, four types of rural kitchen furnitures is proposed.

As the properties of living space and objects change in the digital era, furniture is also expected to change. This study starts from the question of such inclination that the digital innovation drives territories among products into the ambiguous, then tries to trace the variation of meaning against the furniture. Based on this possibility these functions, this research aims, to find out the digital functions which is preferred to be integrated with the furniture for the users of the residential space and the interface design aspects, which are considered important. preliminary survey using university students was done to extract the possible digital functions for convergence. The respondents were married women in their 20s and 30s who filled out the surveys on the internet. As a result, the specific digital convergence functions for both living and kitchen space were Identified. As major important expects for them were found functionality and controllability. Thus furniture design will expand to a concept which designs a new way of life.

The purpose of this study is to develop a checklist based on the stored items of cooking, for making a good kitchen furniture reseach. The research candidates are purposive sampled from 30 households of for 40 or 50 pyeong-type apartments in Kangnam, Seoul, The research data are is collected gotten at by a field study of the stored items of cooking, eating and utility area, by an in-depth interview to 30 households, and by a field survey of the department stores, super-markets of home appliances. Studied households in average hold about 890 items, which are classified as 239 sorts. The first step of making the checklist is to categorize items into 9 biggest categories, considering the usage of items and the stage of the preparing the food. when the item was used. Second step of making the checklist is to categorize the items into 31 smaller categories, which reflect the shape of items, the storage style and the place of storage. Third step of making the checklist is to sort the items into smallest categories by the frequency of the usage, storage type, and the additional capacity of the item. Even Although items are sorted into the same level of categories, the frequency of use make a different storage area. Also, the storage style of the items was different according to the storage area. Based on these factors, we suggested a checklist based on the stored items of cooking.

The study aimed at investigating the terms for each type of the current household furniture and at analyzing a standard based on those terms researched for the furniture, not including kitchen and child furniture. The study was conducted in sales and R&D division of major furniture brands such as Jang-In Gagu, Borneo, and Livart by surveying their staffs, and then, the investigated names were classified according to similar criteria and it was finally analyzed by the definite standard of the names made. In the results, the following 5 standards largely play roles for the naming. First, name according to requirements, second, construction of door, third, materials, fourth, shapes, and lastly, function. Except for the terms of "Sobari" expressed only as Japanese and "living room cabinet of Extension-type" using Korean and English along, most of the names show furniture in detail, and the names from Hangeul, Korean alphabet and from the English have recently and drastically increased with the lifestyle change influenced from Western world.

Households of today tend to gradually change from a large household to a small one. The tendency starts from urban concentration of population with modern industrial society. Small-sized households have rapidly increased with the following three reasons: (i) one-person households with aging society, (ii) individualistic pursuit of happiness, and (iii) emergence of single households due to high prices and a decline in the quality of life. With these social changes, various products for small-sized households have been created and there have also been changes in dwelling patterns with small-size housing and one rooms increasing. Current small-sized living space has combined space of a living room, a bedroom and a kitchen, which makes a house compositive space. A bathroom, however, requires a differentiated suggestion from existing one since it is special space where water is used. Based on this issue, this study intends to present bathrooms in small-sized living space.
