The classification of herniated intervertebral lumbar disc type is clinically important, as treatment method may be slightly different according to the type of herniated intervertebral disc. When 450 patients who suffered from herniated intervertebral lumbar disc were tested with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to find out the type of herniated disc, the following findings were given : 1. The age of the patients investigated ranged from 15 to 83, and their mean age was 40. 2. The male patients were twice as many as the female patients, since the ratio of males to females was 300 : 150. 3. 118 patients suffered from a single herniated disc, and 332 patients were attacked with multi-herniated disc. 4. The types of single herniated disc were a protrusion for 50 patients (40%) and an extrusion for 40 patients (34%). The part of being herniated was an intervertebral disc between $L_4-L_5$ for 95 patients(80%) and the same disc between $L_5-S_1$ for 22 patients(19%). 5. The types of multi : -herniated disc were an protrusion for 67 patients(20%) and an extrusion for 70 patients(21%). Besides, 90 patients (28%) were the case that protrusion and extrusion coexisted simultaneously. The parts of being herniated were $L_3-L_4,\;L_4-L_5$ and $L_5-S_1$ for 53 patients(16%), $L_3-L_4$ and $L_4-L_5$ for 57 patients(17%), and $L_4-L_5$ and $L_5-S_1$ for 139 patients(42%).

Coriander(Coriandrum sativum L.) belongs to the family Umbelliferae/Apiaceae. It is cultivated as a spice and medicinal herb around the world, including its leaves and seeds. Coriander leaves have soft and fragrant, so they can be used in cuisines such as China, Mexico, and, Southeast Asia. Coriander leaves contain a high amount of vitamin C, carotene, and multiple polyphenols. Coriander essential oils and extracts have various chemical components and are known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. This study was carried out for resource discovery, propagation, and DB construction of aromatic plants. In order to evaluate the genetic characteristics, 30 kinds of Coriander seeds were supplied from the Center for Genetic Resources. The evaluation of characteristics of the basal part leaf number, leaf shape, and plant height was investigated. Also, Essential oils extract from various parts of plants including the leaves, flowers, and steam isolated by simultaneous distillation extraction(SDE) apparatus. In the results, heights showed growing to 70 cm over and basal part leaf number 0 to7. The leaves are variable, they are measured according to leaves incisions, and most of the included incision. The qualitative analysis of EOs was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. EOs had various chemical compositions. Major compounds were trans-2-Decenal, linalool, decanal, 2-Dodecenal, 13-Tetradecanal, 2-Undecenal.
Snow albedo can be decreased if there are any impurities on the snow surface other than the snow itself. Due to the decrease of snow albedo, melting rates of surface snow can increase, which is very crucial in climate change and hydrogeology in many parts of the world. Anthropogenic black carbons caused by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuel affect snow and tephra particles generated by geologic volcanic activities reduce snow albedo. In this study, we investigated isotopic compositions for snow covered by tephra particles and compared with this with clean snow. Isotopic compositions of snow with tephra statistically show more enriched than those of clean snow (p<0.02). This can be explained by the fact that snow becomes enriched in $^{18}O$ or D relative to meltwater as melting rates are increased. In addition, the slopes of the linear regression between oxygen and hydrogen for snow with tephra and clean snow are 6.7 and 8, respectively, and the latter is similar to that of the global meteoric water line of 8. Therefore, we can conclude that snow impurities control the isotopic compositions of snow, which is very crucial in the study of climate change and hydrogeology. To quantitatively explain these observations, melting experiments and numerical approaches are required.

In this study, we observed the effects of repeated perms on the morphology of virgin hair of a healthy thirteen year-old girl with scanning electron microscopy. After the first treatment, the outer parts of cuticle cell were broken unevenly and roughly. Cuticle cells were lifted upward making a space. After the third treatment, cuticle cells were lifted off one another and the folded scales showed irregular surface areas. Broken pieces of cells were stuck on the surface and an empty hole was present in the endocuticle of the cytoplasm. We observed that cortex separated from cuticle layer more easilywith repeated treatments.

Biological activities of different parts (stems, leaves, roots, fruits) and solvents (water, ethanol) of seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) grown in Korea were tested as follows. In the experiment of inhibiting $\alpha$-glucosidase activity, ethanol extract of Hippophae rhamnoides L. stem showed the highest inhibitory activity by 93% and the next highest was the ethanol extract of its leaf by 88.7%. In the case of these two extracts, the effect of inhibiting $\alpha$-glucosidase activity was extraordinarily great when comparing with control group, acarbose. In the experiment of inhibiting $\alpha$-amylase activity, water extract of leaf showed the highest result by 54.7%, among all extracts. Regarding anticancer effect for HT-29 cell and DU-145 cell, water extract of root showed 47.1% and 32.3% activities, respectively. The experiment on antibacterial activity showed that the ethanol extract from the leaf inhibitory activity of Clostridium butyricum, Proteus mirabilis, and Shigella flexneri which are the several food borne pathogenic strains. In future research, materials for biological activity appear isolated and purified and research should continue.

The purpose of this study was conducted to ascertain the difference between impinger and passive sampling methods in the process of sampling and analyzing on airborne formaldehyde. Formaldehyde generating workplaces included in this study comprised four types of manufacturing industry such as two workplaces of products of wood, cork, straw and plaiting materials manufacturing industries, one casting metal manufacturing industry, and one parts and accessories for motor vehicles and it′s engines manufacturing industry. Workplaces contained in this study were located in some manufacturing area of Busan industrial complex and this study was carried out during a period from January 2003 to December 2004. Analytical accuracy, precision and detection limit of two methods was compared. Exposure level of its airborne concentration was evaluated in formaldehyde generating workplaces those were classified by types of industry, working process, and time. The results were as follows ; 1. A rate of recovery was 107.1% in impinger method and 101.8% in passive method, and precision was 7.79% in impinger method and 4.40% in passive method. There was no statistical significance in analytical accuracy and precision between two methods. A limitation of detection was 0.011 ppm in passive method which was lower than that of impinger method (0.020 ppm) by 1.8 times. 2. Airborne formaldehyde concentration of impinger method was different from passive method. It′s concentration by passive method was higher by 5.1 times than that by impinger method in the parts and accessories for motor vehicles and it′s engines manufacturing industry (P<0.05). Only in molding process among several types of processes, formaldehyde concentration in passive method was higher by 5.1 times than that in impinger method (P<0.05). Furthermore, formaldehyde concentration in passive method was higher by 1.7 times than that in impinger method (P<0.05) in the first half of year 2003. 3. The geometric mean of formaldehyde concentration in impinger method was lower than that in passive method, but there was no statistical significance of formaldehyde concentration by the difference of sampling method. In conclusion, it is difficult to conclude which is better between the two sampling methods because of no statistical significance for the difference of concentration. Because of lacks of certified passive sampling and analytical method, at present situation, studies on verification of accuracy and precision, obstructive reaction against validity on its exposure assessment, and research to develop domestically manufactured passive sampler in terms of cost-effectiveness should be continuously carried out.
The objective of this research was to establish a domestically available cooling storage technique by cold-air in winter, using winter cool air ventilation fur determining rough rice cooling method in the storage and dry bin. The rough rice storage characteristics of two test conditions, winter cool-air ventilation storage and ambient temperature storage, were evaluated from January to July 2001, using a storage and dry bin of 300-ton capacity. Results of this research are as follows: Grain temperature was from $-5.1\~-8.5^{\circ}C$ after winter cool-air ventilation, and grain initial temperature for ambient temperature bin storage was $0.3\~1.9^{\circ}C$. Moisture content of rough rice decreased from $0.28\;to\;0.93\%$ and from $1.53\;to\;1.92\%$ to compare with original moisture contents for winter cool-air ventilation, and for ambient temperature bin storage, respectively. Broken ratio of brown rice from winter cool-air ventilation bin increased from $0.16\;to\; 0.92\%$, and brown rice broken ratio was from $2.24\;to\;2.86\%$ for ambient temperature bin storage to compare with initial broken ratio. Hardness of stored rice increased along storage period increase in alt storage methods, and cooling bin storage increased rice hardness of 0.271kgf: this increasing was lower then the other methods from 0.059 to 2.239kgf. Germination rates were decreased approximately 9.03, 3.14 and $3.20\%$ for upper, middle, and bottom of ventilating winter air bin, respectively, and germination rates of 2.70, 3.47 and $4.14\%$ were approximately decreased for upper, middle, and bottom parts of ambient temperature bin storage, respectively.
The Yeong-dong heavy snowfall forecast supporting system has been developed during the last several years. In order to construct the conceptual model, we have examined the characteristics of heavy snowfalls in the Yeong-dong region classified into three precipitation patterns. This system is divided into two parts: forecast and observation. The main purpose of the forecast part is to produce value-added data and to display the geography based features reprocessing the numerical model results associated with a heavy snowfall. The forecast part consists of four submenus: synoptic fields, regional fields, precipitation and snowfall, and verification. Each offers guidance tips and data related with the prediction of heavy snowfalls, which helps weather forecasters understand better their meteorological conditions. The observation portion shows data of wind profiler and snow monitoring for application to nowcasting. The heavy snowfall forecast supporting system was applied and tested to the heavy snowfall event on 28 February 2006. In the beginning stage, this event showed the characteristics of warm precipitation pattern in the wind and surface pressure fields. However, we expected later on the weak warm precipitation pattern because the center of low pressure passing through the Straits of Korea was becoming weak. It was appeared that Gangwon Short Range Prediction System simulated a small amount of precipitation in the Yeong-dong region and this result generally agrees with the observations.

In this paper, we report the development of a nondestructive prediction model for lean meat percentage (LMP) in Korean pig carcasses and in the major cuts using a machine vision technique. A popular vision system in the meat industry, the VCS2000 was installed in a modern Korean slaughterhouse, and the images of half carcasses were captured using three cameras from 175 selected pork carcasses (86 castrated males and 89 females). The imaged carcasses were divided into calibration (n=135) and validation (n=39) sets and a multilinear regression (MLR) analysis was utilized to develop the prediction equation from the calibration set. The efficiency of the prediction equation was then evaluated by an independent validation set. We found that the prediction equation - developed to estimate LMP in whole carcasses based on six variables - was characterized by a coefficient of determination ($R^2_v$) value of 0.77 (root-mean square error [RMSEV] of 2.12%). In addition, the predicted LMP values for the major cuts: ham, belly, and shoulder exhibited $R^2_v$ values${\geq}0.8$ (0.73 for loin parts) with low RMSEV values. However, lower accuracy ($R^2_v=0.67$) was achieved for tenderloin cuts. These results indicate that the LMP in Korean pig carcasses and major cuts can be predicted successfully using the VCS2000-based prediction equation developed here. The ultimate advantages of this technique are compatibility and speed, as the VCS2000 imaging system can be installed in any slaughterhouse with minor modifications to facilitate the on-line and real-time prediction of LMP in pig carcasses.
