Method: Data were collected from September to October, 2005. The participants were 240 elderly people who lived at home. Date were collected using structured questionnaire and analysed using t-test, ANOVA, Sheffe test. Result: Empowerment in elderly home residents according to living situations was significantly different(F=3.35, p=.006). Health behavior in elderly home residents according to living situations was not different significantly(F=.88, p=.492). However, questionnaire of "only the elderly couple lives" showed the highest health behavior score as an average 3.05$({\pm}.24)$. Life satisfaction in elderly home residents according to living situations was not different significantly(F=1.67, p=.143). There was a positive correlation between empowerment, health behaviors and life satisfaction. Conclusion: Considering that the single home which only the elderly people reside is the one of general family patterns of the aged people, the elderly people shall acknowledge the difference of values between a family pattern which takes a serious view of family or sons/daughters and a family pattern which reflects a weak supporting consciousness by a nuclear family. Based on above facts, Nurses should develope the nursing strategies to promote life satisfaction in the elderly.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the factors which influence depression for elderly people who live at home. Methods: The participants were 134 elderly people living at home in M city. Data were collected from April 2 to 30, 2009 and analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0 and AMOS 5.0 program. I assumed path coefficients by doing path analysis to understand synthetically causal relationship which influences on depression. Results: Social support, sleep pattern and self esteem had significant direct effects on life satisfaction and accounted for 50% of the total variance in life satisfaction. Physical symptoms, sleep pattern and life satisfaction also had significant direct effects on depression and accounted for 59% of the variance in depression. But social support, self assertiveness and self esteem were not significant for depression. Conclusion: These results provide guidance for designing useful strategies to reduce depression in elderly people living at home.

  • This research is about shared living facilities for the solitary elderly in Gyeonggi province (so called "Carnation House"), which was opened after 2013. These facilities aim to help solving the social problems of the growing number of the solitary elderly. The research was conducted from April 2014 to October 2014 by using observation, measurement, photography, and interview methods. This research reviewed floor plan, area, accessibility, visual openness, and furniture and equipments. The results are as follows: First, considering the need for rest area and the protection of privacy, livingroom should at least be equipped with a variable wall or have a separate room. Secondly, for the kitchen plan, considering the fact that large number of people move simultaneously, kitchen entrance should be widened or LDK type is preferable. Thirdly, the bathroom entrance should be widened to at least 800mm and should have barrier free design. Fourthly, porch entrance should be planned to secure enough space and shoe cabinets for multiple users. Fifthly, to allow the users to enjoy outside view, the windows of living spaces should be placed no higher than 800mm from the floor level. Finally, for the location of the facility, people prefer the location be at the center of the village or near home. In addition, location with easy accessibility for the elderly is advisable. Therefore, establishing local guidelines for shared living facilities for the solitary elderly is advisable. When establishing local guidelines, local characters, culture and usage patterns should be considered.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze behavioral patterns of elderly residents and to identify the characteristics of using furniture and home appliances by elderly-headed households. For this purpose, field studies that included observation and open-ended interview were conducted with 52 elderly-headed households. The major findings of this study were as follows: elderly-headed households need home appliances with lighter body, lower capacity and simple functions. Furniture for elderly people should be designed to minimize the inconvenience of using western style furniture, also the behavior patterns which are important to the elderly like taking medicine have to be considered. And it is necessary to design furniture and equipments properly to prevent accidents happened in housing. Lastly, because the elderly relies heavily on watching TV, it will be desirable to apply TV-friendly devices such as home networking and home automation. Research results will be useful information on product design to reflect characteristics of elderly and follow-up studies associated with each furniture and appliances and specific living behavior are needed.

  • Since 2000, there have been many changes in the residential types, such as an intelligent apartment which integrates both resting space and production space with comfort able, pleasant and safe environments based on internet systems. As the result of the rapid decrease in the birth rate and the prolonged lifespan around the world, it is expected that we will enter into an aging society by 2026. With such the expected change in the living patterns, many issues concerning the increased number of the elderly people have emerged as major social problems such as changes of family formation, its function and values, responsibility of caring for the aged, health and medical care, habitation policies and so on, and it is required to reconsider the social awareness on the living qualities of each old person. However, we have not yet satisfied such requirements with appropriate policies for the improvement of the living environment for them. It is considered, therefore, that we need to develop a new tool that, according to our goals, can give us a broad understanding on several considerations in designing the future homes for the elder people, making it possible to check the process changed by residents' needs in real time and apply it immediately to the space. As we have seen, it is required that spatial design process and design methodology should be considered in designing the homes for the aged for the pre-occupancy design evaluation.

  • This study focuses on the sleep pattern of the elderly people living in the community and its relationship to the occurrences of the depression and deterioration of the cognitive function. Our primary data is the raw data gathered by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2008 in the National Senior Living Conditions and Well-being Needs Assessment Survey. The survey contained data from 12,087 people over 65 years of age living in the community. We have used the secondary data analysis method on this raw data to see if there exists correlation between age, gender, soundness of the sleep, total sleep time and the depression and the cognitive difficulties. Our study finds that the older a person is, the more trouble she has in sleeping. It also shows that too much sleep (in excess of 9 hours) and too little sleep (less than 6 hours) can both be linked to more occurrence of depression. Lack of restful sleep could also be linked to more frequent occurrence of depression and cognitive difficulties. Changes in the sleep pattern is not always pathological in elderly people. However, our study shows that it is important the primary health-care givers understand the role of sleep in elderly person's daily life. They should examine the elderly person's sleep pattern focusing on the quantity and the quality of sleep and develop programs suited for individuals to prevent and intervene sleep disorder.

  • This paper conducted a feasibility study by applying an Internet of Things and Artificial intelligence-based management system for the elderly living alone in an aging society. The number of single-person families over the age of 50 is expected to increase, and problems such as health, safety, and loneliness may occur due to aging. Therefore, by establishing an IoT-based care system for the elderly living alone, a stable service was developed through securing a rapid response system for the elderly living alone and automatically reporting 119. The participants of the demonstration test were subjects under the jurisdiction of the "Seongnam Senior Complex," and the data collection rate between the IoT sensor and the emergency safety gateway was high. During the demonstration period, as a result of evaluating the satisfaction of the IoT-based care system for the elderly living alone, 90 points were achieved. We are currently in the COVID-19 situation. Therefore, the number of elderly living alone is continuously increasing, and the number of people who cannot benefit from care services will continue to occur. Also, even if the COVID-19 situation is over, the epidemic will happen again. So the care system is essential. The elderly care system developed in this way will provide safety management services based on artificial intelligence-based activity pattern analysis, improving the quality of in-house safety services.
