Phase Transformation of Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) in Crystalline State: An Atomistic Modeling Approach

  • The phase transformation of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) in crystalline state was simulated by atomistic modeling using molecular mechanics technique. The crystalline structure of PTT was successfully prepared using the well-defined unit cell structure of PTT and was satisfactorily verified by comparing that with the structure obtained from the x-ray diffraction experiments. The basic elastic properties were predicted in this study, showing that the crystalline structure of PTT is very pliable to the deformation at small strain. When the crystalline structure of PTT was stepwise deformed up to 50% of strain in chain direction under uniaxial extension condition, the change in dihedral angle of trimethylene unit from gg to tt conformation was accompanied with a large increase of stress, indicating that the phase transformation of PTT in crystalline state is difficult to occur.

  • Aggregation states ans electro-optic properties of a binary mixture by mixing a side chain type liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) and a low molecular weight liquid crystal(LMLC) have been studied. Side chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, p-cyanophenol, p-methoxyphenol and polysiloxanes. Low molecular weight liquid crystals were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid and 4-cyano 4'-hydroxy biphenyl. And then, their properties were compared with blended liquid crystals. The thermal properties of the blended liquid crystals were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. The phase behavior of blended sample with temperature were also observed polarized microscope with hot stage. Thus, it seemed to us that a study of LC polysiloxanes with LMLC would be useful, especially in view of the fact that, systematic investigations have been carried out on the effects of changes in LCP/LMLC binary system on the properties of this relatively new type of liquid crystal.

Buried Contact Solar Cells using Tri-crystalline Silicon Wafer

  • Tri-crystalline silicon wafers have three different orientations and three-grain boundaries. In this paper, tri-crystalline silicon (tri-Si) wafers have been used for the fabrication of buried contact solar cells. The optical and micro-structural properties of these cells after texturing in KOH solution have been investigated and compared with those of cast mult- crystalline silicon (multi-Si) wafers. We employed a cost effective fabrication process and achieved buried contact solar cell (BCSC) energy conversion efficiencies up to $15\%$ whereas the cast multi-Si wafer has efficiency around $14\%$.

  • The photomachinable glass-ceramics of Ag and CeO2 doped Li203-SiO2 (LAS)glass system was investigated as a function of UV irradiation time. After the expose and the non-exposed samples were heated, they went under crystalline phase with DTA, SEM, TEM and XRD of normal/high temperature. In this work, crystalline phases, microstructure and dielectric properties were studied under the various time of UV irradiation and heat treatment.

  • [ $TiO_2-V_2O_5$ ] sol was prepared using sol-gel method. Sol changed to gel with hydrolysis and polymerization. DTA properties of gel powder had endothermic reaction due to evaporation of propanol about $80^{\circ}C$, had exothermic reaction due to combustion of propanol about $230^{\circ}C$ and had exothermic reaction due to combustion of alkyl group about $350^{\circ}C$. Crystalline properties of gel powder retained amorphous phase at $50^{\circ}C$, retained anatase phase from $400^{\circ}C\;to\;600^{\circ}C$ and had all rutile phase over $700^{\circ}C$ at 0.01mole $V_2O_5$ additive. The capacitance of thin films increased with increasing heat treatment temperature and thin films had best properties at $700^{\circ}C$. The capacitance of thin films increased a lot with decreasing measurement frequency.

  • In odder to investigate the magnetic properties of CoCr-based bilayered thin films on kind of underlayer, we introduced amorphous Si layer to Co-Cr(-Ta) magnetic layer as underlayer. First, we prepared CoCr and CoCrTa single layer using the Facing Targets Sputtering system to investigate theirs properties. It was revealed that with increasing the film thickness of CoCr, CoCrTa single layer, crystalline orientation and perpendicular coercivity was improved. The CoCrTa thin film showed bettor crystalline and magnetic characteristics than CoCr thin film. As a result of investigating magnetic properties of CoCr and CoCrTa magnetic layer on introducing the Si underlayer, perpendicular coercivity and saturation magnetization of CoCr/Si and CoCrTa/Si bilayered thin film were decreased due to the increased grain size and diffusion of Si atoms to magnetic layer. And they showed constant with increasing the film thickness of Si thin film. However, in case of CoCrTa/Si bilayered thin film, in-plane coercivity was controlled low at about 250Oe. The c-axis orientations of CoCr/si and CoCrTa/Si bilayered thin film showed a good crystalline characteristics as about $2^{\circ}$.

  • Liquid crystalline polymer BB-3(1-methyl) takes two kinds of glass phases which are liquid crystalline glass and liquid glass below the glass temperature. This study is aimed to analyze the phase transitions of those samples with variation of temperature. For the analyzing temperature dispersion of dielectric constants was measured and the results were analyzed.

  • New X-shaped crystalline molecules have been synthesized through various coupling reactions and their electronic properties were investigated. They exhibit good solubility in common organic solvents and good self-film forming properties. They are intrinsically crystalline as they exhibit well-defined X-ray diffraction patterns from uniform and preferred orientations of molecules. They also exhibited high field effect mobilities in thin film transistor (TFT) and good device performances.

  • Transient liquid phase processing was investigated to decrease processing temperatures while maintaining useful piezoelectric properties in the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) system. Niobium oxide$(Nb_2O_5)$ modified crystalline PZT (PZTN) powder was combined with lead silicate $(PS; PbO-SiO_2)$ glass powder and crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia. Firing above the melting temperature of the lead silicate $(PS; Tm \risingdotseq\; 714^{\circk}C)$ resulted in liquid phase densification of the PZTN followed by dissolution of the titania, zirconia, and niobia into the liquid phase, and crystallization of additional PZTN. The addition of crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia to react with the lead oxide from the lead silicate phase resulted in an increase in the dielectric and Piezoelectric properties.
