  • Available transfer capability(ATC) quantifies the viable increase in real power transfer from one point to another in a power system. ATC calculation has predominantly focussed on steady-state viability. In many power systems, point-to-point transfer is not restricted by steady-state limits, but by undesirable dynamic behavior following large disturbance. In this paper, an energy function method for transient stability ATC computation is proposed, which utilizes a between the potential energy and energy function.

  • This Paper Presents new transient signal classification algorithms for underwater transient signals. In general. the ambient noise has small spectral deviation and energy variation. while a transient signal has large fluctuation. Hence to detect the transient signal, we use the spectral deviation and power variation. To classify the detected transient signal. the feature Parameters are obtained by using the Wigner-Ville distribution based eigenvalue decomposition. The correlation is then calculated between the feature vector of the detected signal and all the feature vectors of the reference templates frame-by-frame basis, and the detected transient signal is classified by the frame mapping rate among the class database.

  • Comparisons of joint probability density distribution obtained from the raw data of measured droplet sizes and velocities in a transient diesel fuel spray with computed joint probability density function were made. Simultaneous droplet sizes and velocities were obtained using PDPA. Mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distributions were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. Through the statistical process of functions, mean droplet diameters, non-dimensional mass, momentum and kinetic energy were estimated and compared with the experimental ones. A joint log-hyperbolic density function presents quite well the experimental joint density distribution which were extracted from experimental data.

  • With recent ESS (Energy Storage System) fire accident, the fault protection performance is becoming more important. However, there has never been any experiments with the protection performance on the faults in the ESS system level. In this study, the effect of AC ground fault and IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar mode Transistor) short-circuit failure on MW class ESS was performed experimentally for the first time in the world. First of all, the effect of the AC single line ground fault on battery was analyzed. Moreover, the transient voltage was investigated as a function of the battery capacity and the power level. Finally, the breaking capability and insulation performance of ESS were examined under PCS short-circuit fault condition. Through the tests, it was found that ESS protection system safely blocked the faulty current regardless of the faults, whereas the electronic parts such as IGBT and MC (Magnetic Contactor) were broken by the fault current. Also, the electrical breakdown in ESS resulted from the transient voltage during the protection process.

  • This paper explains hybrid method that combines Time domain simulation technique with the direct method of Transient stability analysis. First, it calculate trajectory of real system by Time domain Simulation using OOP(Object Oriented Programming method) and evaluate Transient Energy Function to induce stability index to calculate Transient stability margin. Once the status of system(stable or unstable) has been identified, proper criteria are proposed to stop time-domain simulation to reduce CPU time.

  • The thermal hydraulic performances of Steam Generator (SG) under both steady and transient operation conditions are of great importance for the safety and economy in nuclear power plants. In this paper, based on our self-developed SG thermal hydraulic analysis code STAF (Steam-generator Thermalhydraulic Analysis code based on Fluent), an improved new version STAF-CT (fully Coupling and Transient) is developed and introduced. Compared with original STAF, the new version code STAF-CT has two main functional improvements including "Transient" and "Fully Three Dimensional Coupling" features. In STAF-CT, a three dimensional energy transferring module is established which can achieve energy exchange computing function at the corresponding position between two sides of SG. The STAF-CT is validated against the international benchmark experiment data and the results show great agreement. Then the U-shaped SG in AP1000 nuclear power plant is modeled and simulated using STAF-CT. The results show that three dimensional flow fields in the primary side make significant effect on the energy source distribution between two sides. The development of code STAF-CT in this paper can provide an effective method for further SG high fidelity research in the nuclear reactor system.

  • This paper presents an energy function which provides the direct relationships between the system stability and parameters of the exciter system. The energy function is derived from the energy conservation law by using the first motion integral. he time derivative does not absolutely satisfy the seminegativeness. However dE/dt usually has big negative value just after the fault clearing so that the energy is rapidly decreased. In this situation, the system state can be obviously confined in a stable region if the intial energy is less than the UEP energy. With these observation, two theorems are developed regarding the state confinement and asymptotic stability. Based on two theorems a new approximated direct energy method is developed to analyze the transient stability with the consideration of the exciter control effects. The proposed method has been tested for a single-machine-infinite bus system.

  • A station blackout experiment called SBO-01 was performed at the ATLAS facility. From the SBO-01 test, the station blackout scenario can be characterized into two typical phases: A first phase characterized by decay heat removal through secondary safety valves until the SG dryouts, and a second phase characterized by an energy release through a blowdown of the primary system after the SG dryouts. During the second phase, some physical phenomena of the change over a pressurizer function, i.e., the pressurizer being full before the POSRV $1^{st}$ opening and then its function being taken by the RV, and the termination of normal natural circulation flow were identified. Finally, a core heatup occurred at a low core water level, although under a significant amount of PZR inventory, whose drainage seemed to be hindered owing to the pressurizer function by the RV. The transient of SBO-01 is well reproduced in the calculation using the MARS code.

  • Transient power level of the fuel rod is one of the key parameters for the transient fuel behavior. Through the analysis of the fuel performance data bases and sensitivity analyses of such parameters as rod power history, fast neutron flux, fuel enrichment and cycle length, which can affect the transient fuel behavior, a methodology generally applicable to find the allowable transient power level during the ANS Conditions I and II below which the mechanical integrity of the fuel rod is maintained was derived, and allowable transient power levels for the 17$\times$17 KOFA fuel rod have been determined as a function of the burnup. With the introduction of this methodology, design analysis of the transient fuel behavior currently being calculated every cycle can be replaced by the simple check of the peak transient power level achievable during the cycle, and an operational flexibility of the reactor can be obtained by allowing higher transient power level up to 689.5 w/cm at low burnup range than current maximum allowable transient power level, 591 w/cm for the 17$\times$17 KOFA fuel.

  • This paper presents a method for optimal placement of series condenser in order to improve the power system transient stability using genetic algorithms(GAs). In applying GAs, this approach utilizes two kinds of strings, one is coded by a binary finite-length for the selection of lines to install series condenser, the other is coded by a real value for the determination of injected condenser capacitance. For the formulation. this paper considers multi-objective function which is the critical energy as decelerating energy in power systems and the total injected condenser capacitance. The proposed method is applied to 9-bus, 18-line, 3-machine model system to show its effectiveness in determining the locations to install series condenser and the series condenser capacitance to be injected, simultaneously.
