The Relationship between Risk of Eating Disorder and Severity of State-Trait Anxiety (일부 대학생의 상태-특성 불안 정도와 식사 장애 위험 정도의 관계)

  • This quantitative study was investigated to examine the relationship between severity of state-trait anxiety and disordered eating patterns in some university students. This study used a cross-sectional study design. Total 347 students participated in this study (88 male and 259 female) among three universities. The assessment of eating disorder was conducted by Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), a score of >or=20 identified individuals likely to have an eating disorder, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Scores of healthy dietary behaviors were obtained by self-assessment instrument on healthy diet scale(20-item questionnaire), and severity of state-trait anxiety was calculated by state-trait anxiety inventory(Total 40- item questionnaire). In groups for each state anxiety and trait anxiety, there were divided between 50 percentile point of cumulatived scores of state anxiety and trait anxiety in all subjects. Linear regression analysis showed overall significant difference between dietary patterns(anorexia nervosa and healthy dietary behaviors) and severity of state-trait anxiety in all sex. Our results indicated that severity of state-trait anxiety may marked eating disorder symptomatology on dimensions of eating disorder prevention.

Relationship between time management and anxiety of Occupation Therapy students

  • Time management skills are essential for Occupation Therapy students' success, and development of clinical competence. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between time management skills and anxiety and academic motivation of nursing students. This study was carried out on 95 Occupation Therapy students. Data were collected using demographic Questionnaire, Time Management Questionnaire (TMQ), Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), which was completed t by self-report. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 software with descriptive and analytical statistics such as ANOVA, independent t-test, Regression and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results also showed a statistically significant negative correlation between the students' TMQ scores and the state anxiety (r= -0.282, p< 0.005) and trait anxiety scores (r= -0.325, p<0.005). Moreover, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the students' TMQ scores and AMS scores (r= 0.279, p< 0.005). Regarding the findings, it seems that it is necessary to plan for improving time management skills in order to enhance academic motivation and reduce anxiety rates among Occupation Therapy students.

Test Anxiety Investigation of Students in Oriental Medicine College by Using Korea's version-Test Anxiey Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Symptom Check List-90-Revision (시험불안척도, 상태-특성불안 척도, 간이정신진단검사를 이용한 한의학과 대학생의 시험불안 특성)

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to investigate and measure the Test-anxiety of college students in OO Oriental Medicine by using Korea's version-Test Anxiey Inventory(K-TAI-K), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI), Symptom Check List-90-Revision(SCL-90-R), etc. Methods : We studied 181 students who being at OO College of Oriental Medicine in second semester, 2007 We used some questionaries like K-TAI-K, STAI, SCL-90-R , College Life Satisfacaion, Life Event Questionnaire. Results and Conclusions : 1.141 persons(83,43%) of students feel the largest test anxiety before test. 18 persons(9.94%) of students feel the largest test anxiety after test. 2.The 1st grade students of preparatory course and 4th grade students of regular course have the lowest score in State Anxiety Inventory and obsessive-compulsive of SCL-90-R. The 2nd grade students of regular course have the lowest score in State Anxiety Inventory and obsessive-compulsive of SCL-90-R 3. Students who failed in test one time have the lowest score , and who failed in test more than two times have the highest score in K-TAl-K Students who failed one time in grade promotion more than two times showed high score in second K-TAI-K. 4. The higher grade, the lower score in College Life Satisfaction. The scores of College Life Satisfaction have negative correlations with those of K-TAI-K, STAI SCL-90-R except phobic anxiety, 5. The scores of Life Event Questionnaire have positive correlations with those of K-TAI-K, STAI and SCL-90-R except phobic anxiety. 6. The scores of K-TAl-K have positive correlations with those of STAI, SCL-90-R, College Life Satisfaction and Life Event Questionnaire. A correlation coefficient of obsessive-compulsive scale is highest, anxiety scale is second, interpersonal sensitivity scale is third, depression scale is fourth high among the scales of SCL-90-R.

Development of the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale (어머니의 격리불안 척도의 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was the development of a scale to assess maternal anxiety after mother-child separation. Subjects consisted of 384 mothers who had children from 6 to .36 months of age. A questionnaire consisting of eighty Likert-type items and Spielberger's(1970) State Anxiety Scale were administered to mothers and data were analyzed using item analysis. factor analysis. multiple regression. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$. Pearson's correlation and F-test. Sixty of the eighty items were significant and deemed acceptible through item discrimination method with indices ranging from. 32 to .95. Factor analytic procedures have selected 54 items of the 60-item scale and supported a 5-factor solution. The subscales labeled 'Maternal Separation Anxiety'. 'Perception of Separation Effects on the Child', 'Desire for Physical Cuddling and Closeness'. 'Attitudes toward the Value or Importance of Exclusive Maternal Care' and 'Employment-related Separation Concerns,' Finally. a multiple regression analysis conducted to reduce the length of the scale yielded a 39-item form for the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale(MSAS). Internal consistency of the MSAS was high(Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ =.85). The correlation of the MSAS with the Spielberger's State Anxiety measure yielded a coefficient of .36, revealing a moderate and positive relationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the physical therapist's explanation of the treatment prior to electrical stimulation affects the subjects level of anxiety. Eighty healthy subjects participated in this study and were assigned either to the experimental group receiving information on the treatment ($n_1$=40) or to the control group not receiving information on the treatment ($n_2$=40). Transcutaneus Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), a sphygomamometer and the Spielberger State Anxiety Scale Questionnaire were used to investigate the threshold of anxiety. Analysis of data revealed significant differences in pulse and diastolic blood pressure compared to the control group when the subjects were stimulated electrically after receiving information on the treatment. We found significant differences between the two groups. The results of the study indicate that the patient's anxiety can be reduced by the physical therapist's explanation on the treatment.

A novel brief questionnaire using a face rating scale to assess dental anxiety and fear

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of a four-item questionnaire using a face rating scale to measure dental trait anxiety (DTA), dental trait fear (DTF), dental state anxiety (DSA), and dental state fear (DSF). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Participants were consecutively selected from patients undergoing scaling (S-group; n = 47) and implant placement (I-group; n = 25). The S-group completed the questionnaire both before initial and second scaling, whereas the I-group responded on the pre-surgery day (Pre-day), the day of implant placement (Imp-day), and the day of suture removal (Post-day). RESULTS. The reliability in the S-group was evaluated using the test-retest method, showing a weighted kappa value of DTA, 0.61; DTF, 0.46; DSA, 0.67; DSF, 0.52. Criterion-related validity, assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory's trait anxiety and state anxiety, revealed positive correlations between trait anxiety and DTA/DTF (DTA, ρ = 0.30; DTF, ρ = 0.27, ρ: correlation coefficient) and between state anxiety and all four items (DTA, ρ = 0.41; DTF, ρ = 0.32; DSA, ρ = 0.25; DSF, ρ = 0.25). Known-group validity was assessed using the initial data and Imp-day data from the S-group and I-group, respectively, revealing significantly higher DSA and DSF scores in the I-group than in the S-group. Responsiveness was gauged using I-group data, showing significantly lower DSA and DSF scores on post-day compared to other days. CONCLUSION. The newly developed questionnaire has acceptable reliability and validity for clinical use, suggesting its usefulness for research on dental anxiety and fear and for providing patient-specific dental care.

The Reliability and Validity of the Korean version of the Body Shape Questionnaire

  • Objective : There is an increasing number of people are not satisfied with their appearance and shape. Therefore, assessment tools are needed to evaluate the appearance or body shape. This study investigated the reliability and validity of a Korean version of the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ). Methods : Participants completed the BSQ, Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination-Self Report, Eating Disorder Inventory-2, Beck Depression Inventory, Self-Esteem Scale, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results : The Korean version of BSQ presented satisfactory test-retest reliability, internal consistency and validity. Exploratory factor analysis yielded four factors as follow: feeling fat, shame and inferiority about one's body shape, attitudes concerning body image perception, and purging behavior. Conclusion : These results show the Korean BSQ exhibits good psychometric properties and can accurately evaluate the body shape concerns among Korean adults.

The Effect of Music Therapy on the State Anxiety, Pain in Dental Patients (음악요법이 치과환자의 불안, 통증에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of music therapy on state anxiety, perception of pain of dental patients. The subjects consisted of forty patients undergoing dental treatment at one dental clinic. Twenty eight of them were assigned to the experimental group, while twelve subjects to the control group. The data were collected from June 29 to August 1, 1998 by means of a state anxiety scale (by Spielberger) questionnaire and visual analog scale for pain measurement. The data were analysed with $X^2$-test, t-test, and paired t-test. The results are as follows 1) There were no significant differences between the experimental and the control group on the post treatment the state anxiety score. However, in the experimental group, the state anxiety score decreased significantly after music therapy(t=3.19, p=0.003). In the control group, the state anxiety score did not decrease significantly(t=1.65, p=0.126). Especially, high score group on the state anxiety was found to be of significant differences in the experimental group (t=3.09, p=0.007). 2) There were no significant differences between the experimental and the control group on the post treatment perception of pain. However, after music therapy, the experimental group had a lower post treatment perception of pain than the control group. 3) After music therapy, subjective response of the experimental group was one of relative contentment. From these results, it is concluded that music therapy as a nursing intervention can be effective in decreasing anxiety in dental patients.

A Study on the Relationship Between State Anxiety and Maternal Fetal Attachment of Unmarried Mothers in a Welfare Center (보호시설 미혼모의 태아애착행위와 상태불안에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between state anxiety and maternal fetal attachment of unmarried mothers in a welfare center. Methods: The subjects were 25 unmarried mothers in a welfare center. The data was collected through personal interviews using a questionnaire. The instruments used for this study were the modified Spielberger's state anxiety inventory and Cranley's Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale. Data was analyzed descriptive statistics, mean, standard deviation, t-test and the pearson correlation coefficient with the SPSS computer program. Results: The age of the subjects ranged from 15 to 25, and their average age was 20.0. The mean score of state anxiety was 58.2. There was significant difference in the degree of maternal state anxiety between the group whose pregnancy was known by their family and the group whose pregnancy was hidden. The group whose pregnancy was known showed a low state anxiety score. There was a significant difference in the degree of maternal state anxiety by the gestational period. The group who were in the second and third gestational trimester showed lower state anxiety score than in the first trimester. The mean score of maternal-fetal attachment(MFA) was 64.9. There were significant differences in the degree of maternal fetal attachment, by an ultrasound scan experience. The most frequently practiced attachment item was "I think the fetus is able to feel(mean 3.8)". Unmarried mothers degree of state anxiety showed a negative correlation with the degree of maternal fetal attachment(r=-.25), but there was no significant difference between the two variables. Conclusions: The unmarried mothers made an effort in striving to reduce their high state anxiety and to enhance maternal fetal attachment. They also realize how to take care of their state anxiety.

Effects of the Temperament and Character on Depression, Anxiety, and Maternal-Fetal Attachment in High-Risk Pregnant Women (고위험 임산부의 기질과 성격이 임산부의 우울, 불안, 모-태아 애착에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : High-risk pregnant women are exposed to the physical and emotional crisis associate with the condition of high-risk pregnancy, making these women emotionally unstable, exhibiting such conditions as depression and anxiety. The aim of this study was to examine what effects the temperament and character of high-risk pregnant women had on their depression, anxiety, and maternal-fetal attachment. Methods : A hundred and five high-risk pregnant women were recruited in the maternity ward of the Keimyung University medical center. All subjects were administered a sociodemographic and obstetric questionnaire, Temperament and Character Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, State Trait Anxiety Inventory-State, and Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale. Results : First, higher scores on the harm-avoidance scale and lower scores on the self-directedness scale were associated with higher depression scores. Second, higher scores on the harm-avoidance and reward-dependence scale were associated with higher anxiety scores. Lastly, higher scores on the cooperativeness scale were associated with higher maternal-fetal attachment scores. Conclusion : Temperament and character in high-risk pregnant women were associated with the degree of depression, anxiety, maternal-fetal attachment. Based on these findings, it is suggested that examining temperament and character in advance and screening for vulnerability in pregnant women can help to prevent emotional problems for high-risk pregnant women.
