  • This paper starts with a brief overview of the history of the European Space Agency and recalls some of its main features. Next, the gradual process of cooperation between ESA and the EU is outlined, leading to the creation of the Framework Agreement in 2004 and the adoption of the European Space Policy in 2007. The entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009 codified the space competence of the EU, and its implications are addressed. Lastly, some attention is paid to the issue of space security in Europe, through ESA's new SSA programme adopted in 2008, and to the relevance of the EU Council initiative for a Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities in 2008. The paper ends with some conclusions.

  • In this paper, we propose the design criteria of the pre-processing scheme used in ABAB type quasi-orthogonal space-time block code(QOSTBC) and derive. The proposed design criteria show how to obtain full-diversity and full-rate (FDFR) property, single-symbol decodability, and increased coding gam. We design an improved ABAB type QOSTBC using the proposed design criteria. The desinged QOSTBC has a superior performance to Dalton's QOSTBC and inherits the merits of Dalton's QOSTBC, which are FDFR property, and single symbol decodability for PAM signal constellation.

  • Space-time coding and modulation exploit the presence of multiple transmit antennas to improve performance on multipath Rayleigh fading channels. In this paper, we propose the Trellis-Coded Differential Space Time Modulation-OFDM system with multiple symbol detection. The Trellis-code perform the set partition with unitary group codes. The Viterbi decoder containing new branch metrics is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate (BER) in the differential detection of the Unitary differential space time modulation. Also, we describe the Viterbi algorithm in order to use this branch metrics. Our study shows that such a Viterbi decoder improves BER performance without sacrificing bandwidth and power efficiency.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of transmitter and receiver of W-CDMA system using the channel coding and space time code in downlink over ITU-R realistic channel model. We can improve the data rate and the reliability of communications by a channel code, and we can get a diversity gain by using the space time code over fading channels. We also apply the RAKE receiver to improve a performance in multi-path fading channel environment.

  • In this paper, we extend the case of information exchange error mitigation for the distributed orthogonal space-time block code (DOSTBC) for two transmit antennas to distributed quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (DQOSTBC) for four transmit antennas. A rate 1 full-diversity DQOSTBC for four transmit antennas is designed. The code matrix changes according to different information exchange error cases, so full diversity is maintained even if not all information exchange is correct. We also perform analysis of the pairwise error probability. The performance analysis indicates that the proposed rate 1 DQOSTBC outperforms rate 1/2 DOSTBC for four transmit antennas at the same transmission rate, which is confirmed by the simulation results.

  • Since the publication of Alamouti's famous space-time block code, various quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QSTBC) for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) fading channels for more than two transmit antennas have been proposed. It has been shown that these codes cannot achieve full diversity at full rate. In this paper, we present a simple feedback scheme for rich scattering (flat Rayleigh fading) MIMO channels that improves the coding gain and diversity of a QSTBC for 2$^n$ (n=3, 4, ${\cdots}$) transmit antennas. The relevant channel state information is sent back from the receiver to the transmitter quantized to one or two bits per code block. In this way, signal transmission with an improved coding gain and diversity near to the maximum diversity order is achieved. Such high diversity can be exploited with either a maximum-likelihood receiver or low-complexity zero-forcing receiver.

  • We describe a method for the in-orbit calibration of body-mounted magnetometers based on the CHAOS-7 geomagnetic field model. The code is designed to find the true calibration parameters autonomously by using only the onboard magnetometer data and the corresponding CHAOS outputs. As the model output and satellite data have different coordinate systems, they are first transformed to a Star Tracker Coordinate (STC). Then, non-linear optimization processes are run to minimize the differences between the CHAOS-7 model and satellite data in the STC. The process finally searches out a suite of calibration parameters that can maximize the model-data agreement. These parameters include the instrument gain, offset, axis orthogonality, and Euler rotation matrices between the magnetometer frame and the STC. To validate the performance of the Python code, we first produce pseudo satellite data by convoluting CHAOS-7 model outputs with a prescribed set of the 'true' calibration parameters. Then, we let the code autonomously undistort the pseudo satellite data through optimization processes, which ultimately track down the initially prescribed calibration parameters. The reconstructed parameters are in good agreement with the prescribed (true) ones, which demonstrates that the code can be used for actual instrument data calibration. This study is performed using Python 3.8.5, NumPy 1.19.2, SciPy 1.6, AstroPy 4.2, SpacePy 0.2.1, and ChaosmagPy 0.5 including the CHAOS-7.6 geomagnetic field model. This code will be utilized for processing NextSat-1 and Small scale magNetospheric and Ionospheric Plasma Experiment (SNIPE) data in the future.

  • Alamouti space-time code (STC) is a part of the UMTS-WCDMA standard. However, up to the best of our knowledge no exact closed-form outage and bit error probability (BEP) formulas for this famous code exists. Evaluating its performance through simulations is time-consuming and therefore, there should be analytical performance graphs to serve as a reference which are derived in this paper for coherently MPSK-modulated data. Additionally, analytical results take into account different channel fading levels from transmit antennas to receive ones.

  • During the development process of a thermal-hydraulic system code, a non-regression test (NRT) must be performed repeatedly in order to prevent software regression. The NRT process, however, is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Thus, automation of this process is an ideal solution. In this study, we have developed a program to support an efficient NRT for the SPACE code and demonstrated its usability. This results in a high degree of efficiency for code development. The program was developed using the Visual Basic for Applications and designed so that it can be easily customized for the NRT of other computer codes.

  • In this paper, we propose a new quasi-orthogonal space-time block code(QO-STBC) achieving full rate and full diversity for general QAM and quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels with four transmit antennas. This code possesses the quasi orthogonal property like the conventional minimum decoding complexity QO-STBC(MDC-QO-STBC), which allows independently a maximum likelihood(ML) decoding to only require joint detection of two real symbols. By computer simulation results, we show that the proposed code exhibits the identical BER performance with the existing MDC-QO-STBC. However, the proposed code has an advantage in the transceiver implementation since the original coding scheme may be modified so that increases of peak-to-average power ratio occur at only two transmit antennas, but the MDC-QO-STBC does at all of transmit antennas.
