  • Supporting quality of service (QoS) guarantees for diverse multimedia services are the primary concerns for WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) networks. A scheduling scheme that satisfies QoS requirements has become more important for wireless communications. We propose a downlink scheduling scheme called adaptive priority-based downlink scheduling (APDS) for providing QoS guarantees in IEEE 802.16 networks. APDS comprises two major components: Priority assignment and resource allocation. Different service-type connections primarily depend on their QoS requirements to adjust priority assignments and dispatch bandwidth resources dynamically. We consider both starvation avoidance and resource management. Simulation results show that our APDS methodology outperforms the representative scheduling approaches in QoS satisfaction and maintains fairness in starvation prevention.

  • The success of the IEEE 802.11 standard has prompted research into efficiency of the different medium access methods and their support for different traffic types. A modified version of the point coordination function (PCF) called modified PCF has been introduced as a way to improve the efficiency over the standard method. It has been shown through a simulation study and a mathematical analysis that channel utilization can be much improved compared to the standard, in case there is no so-called hidden station problem. However, under the hidden station problem, the efficiency of the modified PCF would obviously decrease. In this paper, some enhancements of the modified PCF are introduced. Firstly, we propose a retransmission process to allow frames involved in collisions to be retransmitted. Then, we propose a collision resolution mechanism to reduce the frame collision probability due to the hidden station problem. In addition, we propose a priority scheme to support prioritization for different traffic types such as interactive voice and video, and real-time data traffic in the modified PCF. To prevent the starvation of one low priority traffic, minimum transmission period is also guaranteed to each traffic type via an admission control algorithm. We study the performance of the modified PCF under the hidden station problem and the performance of the modified PCF with priority scheme through simulations. To illustrate the efficiency of the priority scheme, we therefore compare its simulation results with those of some standardized protocols: The distributed coordination function (DCF), the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA), the PCF, and our previously proposed protocol: The modified PCF without priority scheme. The simulation results show that the increment of delay in the network due to the hidden station problem can be reduced using the proposed collision resolution mechanism. In addition, in a given scenario the modified PCF with priority scheme can provide better quality of service (QoS) support to different traffic types and also support a higher number of data stations than the previous proposals.

  • This study has the purpose to reveal the differences of residents' satisfaction level & demand of community environment and recognized residents' improvement priority of community environment at 3 complexes at the big city in the provinces. The 3 residential complexes had differentiated developmental concepts; the residence-oriented complex, the residence-government mixed complex with an eco-friendly concept, and the outskirt residence-industry mixed complex. Followings are the results of the study. 1) The satisfaction of residents in the community environment correlates with the increasing convenience facilities after construction. In the new outskirt complexes of smaller cities, dissatisfaction occurs more with public transportation rather than the road system, so that efficient public transportation systems, inner and neighboring areas, is requisite. 2) Even in the residence-oriented complex, the education environment does not entirely account for satisfaction level; the green environment is also second in priority after the education environment. In the residence-government mixed complex with an eco-friendly concept, a good natural environment does not entirely account for satisfaction level; education environment is also second in priority after the natural environment. The supply of sufficient schools may be fulfilled in the ways of reform of the education zone with neighboring existing residential areas. In the outskirt residence-industry mixed complex of smaller cities, priority was placed more on the location and convenience; this explains the complex's poor access to downtown.

  • A chiller, having a thermal storage system, can contribute to load-leveling and can reduce the cost of electricity by using electricity at night. In this study, the control experiments and simulations are conducted using both conventional and advanced methods for the building cooling system. Advanced approaches, such as the "region control method", divide the control region into five zones according to the size of the building load, and determines the cooling capacities of the chiller and thermal storage. On the other hand, the "dynamic programming method" obtains the optimal cooling capacities of the chiller and thermal storage by selecting the minimum-cost path by carrying out repetitive calculations. The "thermal storage priority method" shows an inferior chiller performance owing to the low-part load operation, whereas the chiller priority method leads to a high electric cost owing to the low utilization of thermal storage and electricity at night. It has been proven that the advanced control methods have advantages over the conventional methods in terms of electricity consumption, as well as cost-effectiveness. According to the simulation results during the winter season, the electric cost when using the dynamic programming method was 6.5% and 8.9% lower than that of the chiller priority and the thermal storage priority methods, respectively. It is therefore concluded that the cost of electricity utilizing the region control method is comparable to that of the dynamic programming method.

  • The aims of this study were to develop the suitable "system software" in chemical ranking and scoring (CRS) for the food hazardous chemicals associated with environmental emission and to suggest the priority lists of food contamination by environmental-origined pollutants. Study materials were selected with reference to the priority pollutants list for environment and food management from domestic and foreign research and the number of study materials is 103 pollutants (18 heavy metals, 10 PBTs, 10 EDs, and 65 organic compounds). The Food-CRS-Korea system consisted of the environmental fate model via multimedia, transfer environment to food model, and health risk assessment by contaminated food intake. We have established that health risks of excess cancer risks, hazard quotients (HQs) by chronic toxicity and HQs by reproductive toxicity convert to score, respectively. The creditable scoring system was designed to consider uncertainty of quantitative risk assessment based on VOI (Value-Of-Information). The predictability of the Food-CRS-Korea model was evaluated by comparing the presumable values and the measured ones of the environmental media and foodstuffs. The priority lists based on emissions with background-level-correction are 15 pollutants such as arsenic, cadmium, and etc. The priority lists based on environmental monitoring date are 17 pollutants including DEHP, TCDD, and so on. Consequently, we suggested the priority lists of 13 pollutants by considering the several emission and exposure scenarios. According to the Food-CRS-Korea system, arsenics, cadmium, chromes, DEHP, leads, and nickels have high health risk rates and reliable grades.

  • The objective of this study is to identify the priority area where the nonpoint source pollution (NPS) management is required and to set up the load reduction goals for the identified priority area. In this study, the load duration curve (LDC) was first developed using the flow and water quality data observed at 286 monitoring stations. Based on the developed LDC, the priority area for the NPS pollution management was determined using a three-step method. The 24 watersheds were finally identified as the priority areas for the NPS pollution management. The water quality parameters of concern in the priority areas were the total phosphorus or chemical oxygen demand. The load reduction goals, which were calculated as the percent reduction from current loading levels needed to meet target water quality, ranged from 67.9% to 97.2% during high flows and from 40.3% to 69.5% during moist conditions, respectively. The results from this study will help to identify critical watersheds for NPS program planning purposes. In addition, the process used in this study can be effectively applied to identify the pollutant of concern as well as the load reduction target.

  • Global attention to the greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation is increasing. There is a growing recognition of reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation plus (REDD+) as an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the forestry sector. The Republic of Korea is implementing REDD+ pilot projects in four Southeast Asian countries as part of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study evaluates countries with the potential to become priority partner countries for Korea's REDD+ programs, using the following five criteria: The first criterion is that a country should include the forest sector and REDD+ in its national plan for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The second and third criteria refer to an average forest coverage rate of over 44% and a forest change rate of over - 0.1%, among the countries with forest cover of more than 10 million ha. The fourth criterion is that the country should meet the Forest Reference Emission Level requirements, one of the four elements of the Warsaw REDD+ Framework. The fifth criterion is that the country should have bilateral relations with the Republic of Korea in forestry while at the same time be a partner country for cooperation on climate change as well as a REDD+ pilot country. Based on our evaluation, we conclude that the first priority countries are Indonesia, Cambodia, and Myanmar. The second priority countries include Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru. Finally, the third priority countries are Columbia, Congo, and Mozambique. This study suggests that for the selection of priority partner countries, Korean REDD+ programs should center on existing REDD+ pilot countries.

  • Path restoration, which is needed to increase network survivability in MPLS networks, is a technology of supplying reliable service by delivering the traffics through restoring the paths when links or nodes of a working path are failed. In this paper, we propose a path restoration method using duplication of working paths for link failure as a method of restoring paths for the high priority traffics. The existing path restoration method transmits the traffics to the path restoration uniformly in regardless of the priority while link obstacle. It has a problem to take a long time to restore the connection of the high priority traffics. On the other hand, the suggested restoration method establishes the duplication path for the working path, which transmits the high priority traffics and transmit the traffics through the duplication path. It has a strong point to restore the connection quickly. Also, through simulation we analyze the performance of the restoration system using the duplication path and prove that the proposed restoration method is superior in performance to the existing restoration methods regarding to the high priority traffics.
