  • The propagation of radiation source uncertainties in spent nuclear fuel (SNF) cask shielding calculations is presented in this paper. The uncertainty propagation employs the depletion and source term outputs of the deterministic code STREAM as input to the transport simulation of the Monte Carlo (MC) codes MCS and MCNP6. The uncertainties of dose rate coming from two sources: nuclear data and modeling parameters, are quantified. The nuclear data uncertainties are obtained from the stochastic sampling of the cross-section covariance and perturbed fission product yields. Uncertainties induced by perturbed modeling parameters consider the design parameters and operating conditions. Uncertainties coming from the two sources result in perturbed depleted nuclide inventories and radiation source terms which are then propagated to the dose rate on the cask surface. The uncertainty analysis results show that the neutron and secondary photon dose have uncertainties which are dominated by the cross section and modeling parameters, while the fission yields have relatively insignificant effect. Besides, the primary photon dose is mostly influenced by the fission yield and modeling parameters, while the cross-section data have a relatively negligible effect. Moreover, the neutron, secondary photon, and primary photon dose can have uncertainties up to about 13%, 14%, and 6%, respectively.

  • Background: With the increasing elderly population, the need for gait analysis of these elderly individuals is also increasing. Most devices are costly and not portable; however, smartphones using built-in sensors capable of measuring motion and are easily available. Objectives: To examine the reliability and validity of knee joint angles of the elderly using smartphone measurements during walking. Design: Quasi-experimental research. Methods: Sixteen elderly people, aged 65+ and living in Daejeon and Chungbuk, South Korea, participated in the study. Electrogoniometers and smartphones were attached to the thigh and the side and front of the shank of each subject, respectively, using double-sided tape, an arm band, and an elastic band. Each subject completed two sets of at least seven gait cycles (14 steps). Results: Both the smartphones and electrogoniometers exhibited high agreement in terms of their primary and secondary measurements (ICC>.75). The agreement between the smartphones and electrogoniometers was also high in terms of both the primary and secondary measurements (ICC<.60). Conclusion: These results indicate that smartphones can be costly equipment cannot, even though they cannot completely replace existing clinical-grade devices. Their utility is emphasized herein for measuring knee joint angles of the elderly during walking.

  • For insulation design of the superconducting transformer, many types of insulation tests should be carried out. To clarify the components of insulation for superconducting transformer, there are main four parts as 1ike that turn-to-turn interior of each primary and secondary windings, layer-to-layer between primary and secondary windings, and winding to grounded structures. The insulation components should meet the required withstand voltage of the system and enough safety factors must included. As the fundamental insulation characteristics, we tested surface flashover voltage of spacer that would place between the coils and would take the role of both cooling duct and insulator. The structure of spacer in practice vary depending on coil type, in this work we considered double pancake coil for the superconducting transformer. In this study we tested flashover voltages of several arrangement of spacer.

  • For the purpose of a cost effective design of practical subsonic/supersonic ejector systems, an experiment was carried out using a superheated steam as a primary driving flow. The superheated steam jet was produced by several different kinds of subsonic and supersonic nozzles. The secondary flow of atmospheric air inside a plenum chamber was drawn into the primary steam jet. The vacuum performance of the plenum chamber was investigated for a wide range of the ejector operation pressure ratio. The result showed that the static pressure of the mixed flow at the ejector throat is only a function of the ejector operation pressure ratio, regardless of the primary nezzle type employed.
