  • The duration of volunteering can be analyzed in terms of commitment and attachment. Previous studies have investigated the duration of volunteering predominantly from the perspective of commitment. Alternatively, this study focuses on the concept of attachment and investigates the characteristics of those who volunteer habitually over their whole life, regardless of the regularity and the intensity of the volunteer work. In so doing, the study attempts to identify factors associated with the attachment to volunteering. Data came from a sample of 8,415 participants, ages over twenty who responded to all the surveys of the Korea Welfare Panel Study, from Wave 1 to 10. Zero-inflated negative bionomial regression model was employed to analyze the total number of volunteering in the past ten years. Findings show that people with high attachment to volunteering were those with religion, less education, and a strong sense of reciprocity. Based on the findings, we provide the practical implications for the improved operation and management of volunteer organizations.

  • Objectives: Socioeconomic disadvantages interact with numerous factors which affect geriatric mental health. One of the main factors is the social relations of the elderly. The elderly have different experiences and meanings in their social lives depending on their socio-cultural environment. In this study, we compared the effects of social relations on depression among the elderly according to their living arrangement (living alone or living with others) and residential area. Methods: We defined social relations as "meetings with neighbors" (MN). We then analyzed the impact of MN on depression using data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging Panel with the generalized estimating equation model. We also examined the moderating effect of living alone and performed subgroup analysis by dividing the sample according to which area they lived in. Results: MN was associated with a reduced risk of depressive symptoms among elderlies. The size of the effect was larger in rural areas than in large cities. However, elderly those who lived alone in rural areas had a smaller protective impact of MN on depression, comparing to those who lived with others. The moderating effect of living alone was significant only in rural areas. Conclusions: The social relations among elderlies had a positive effect on their mental health: The more frequent MN were held, the less risk of depressive symptoms occurred. However, the effect may vary depending on their living arrangement and environment. Thus, policies or programs targeting to enhance geriatric mental health should consider different socio-cultural backgrounds among elderlies.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the network characteristics of ports and their performance that is represented by port competitiveness for the port operators. The study employs Social Network Analysis (SNA) to evaluate network characteristics comprising four centrality indices. For this research, data from Containerization International Yearbooks for 2006-2011 is used to analyze the service networks of 20 major liner shipping companies. In SNA, nodes (vertices) in the network are the ports and links (edges) in the network are connections realized by vessel movements, such that the liner shipping network determines the port network. In addition, panel regression analysis has been employed to investigate the relationship between port network characteristics and their performance. The results suggest that the four centrality indices identify the roles of the world's major ports from 2006 to 2011 and that port performance is determined not only by macroeconomic variables and service capabilities but also by the eigenvector centrality of ports in networks.

  • Agricultural research and development (R&D) investment has contributed not only to agriculture but also to the overall economic growth of the country. The recent arrival of the fourth industrial revolution has raised the need for agricultural R&D as a preparation. Agriculture R&D is directly related to the fourth industrial revolution in the agricultural and livestock sectors that utilize big data, robots, artificial intelligence and cloud. Meanwhile, subsidies or grants are considered the most widely used means of policy. Therefore, in light of the current situation in which Chinese agriculture values R&D investment, this study attempted to analyze the dynamic relationship between variables by establishing a model of agricultural environment subsidy representing the role of government, agricultural technology progress representing existing agricultural R&D investment, agricultural income representing agricultural development and total agricultural output. The analysis results showed that each variable's reaction to the rise in China's agricultural R&D investment has a positive effect on agricultural development, in line with the theory that the investment in science and technology in the agricultural sector has a positive effect. In addition, the response of each variable to China's rising agricultural environment subsidy is shown to have a positive relationship, which can also be said to be in line with the theory that the government's market-friendly intervention is beneficial to economic development.

  • This study used data from the 10rd and 15th year of the Korean Welfare Panel to evaluate the effects of the Energy Voucher Program(EVP) on the consumption and expenditure of EVP users' households. The study consisted of program group using EVP and control group not using. Chi-square and t-test were used for the characteristic differences among the groups, and the difference of consumption expenditure was identified by multiple regression analysis. As a result, EVP had a statistically significant effect on the health care costs of EVP users' households, resulting in an increase in health care costs(𝛽=3.06). However, there was no statistically significant effect on the total cost of living, basic cost, education cost, and recreation/entertainment cost. Therefore, in order to increase the effectiveness of the EVP system, it is required to improve the EVP system by expanding the level of benefits and easing the qualification standards for the eligibility for benefits.

  • This study explores the effectiveness of employment-oriented welfare state by analyzing the mediating role of employment rate on the relationship between public welfare effort and fiscal soundness. Notably, this study considers the quality of employment into the analysis: part-time work, involuntary part-time work and low-wage work in analysis. The data sample consists of 18 OECD countries which initiated employment-oriented welfare strategy after the crisis of welfare state. An analysis was conduct based on Baron & Kenny(1986)'s method and panel two-stage model to handle the endogeneity problem. The results show that while the high level of public welfare effort negatively affects the fiscal soundness if it contributes to boosting employment rates, it has positive effects on the fiscal soundness. However, when the incidence of involuntary part-time employment and low-wage employment is high, the mediating impact of employment rate on the fiscal soundness disappears. This study argues that unless the quality of employment is taken into consideration, the positive effect of employment-oriented welfare state strategy to improve the fiscal soundness is not fully guaranteed.

  • Purpose - International strategic alliance has been regarded as a strategic decision made by firms' managerial problems and ensure performance growth. From the perspective of the proactive behavior for changing strategies in a global market, this study aims to identify whether performance feedback influences firms' decisions to pursue strategic alliances. This study examines the effects of performance feedback on performance when firms use strategic alliances. Design/methodology - To analyze the impact of performance feedback on forming an international strategic alliance, this study adopt the concept of performance feedback to develop a research model and our hypotheses. Thus, this study used a two-stage least squares unbalanced panel data analysis with random effects. This study is based on 24,543 observations from Korean manufacturing firms from 2007 to 2016. Findings - The results show that firms pursue the formation of strategic alliances more actively, if their past financial and R&D performance are lower than their aspiration level, based on the result of performance feedback. An in split sample analysis for examining the effect of a firm's technology sophistication based on the OECD's classification, negative innovation performance discrepancy has positive effects on the probability of international alliance in high-tech and medium-high-tech industries. Financial performance also improves when a firm decides to form a strategic alliance based on the results of performance feedback. Originality/value - This research extends recent efforts to better understand the effect of performance feedback on firms' performance when they use strategic alliances. These findings suggest that the CEOs and managers of firms should consider the performance feedback perspective when deciding to pursue a strategic alliance to improve performance. In other words, the decision-makers in a firm must analyze and consider various complex variables inside and outside the firm and expand such subjects of examination to more complex and dynamic factors.

  • In accordance with huge demand for capital to meet the expansion of steel production, there are more and more steel companies who have officially listed their stocks in HOSE and HNX. One of the key issues in successful initial public offerings and seasonal offerings for these companies is how to make stocks of steel companies become more attractive in the eyes of investors. The purpose of this research is to analyze the determinants of share prices of listed steel companies in Vietnam. This study utilized macro-economic variables, ratios and indicators representing characteristics of steel industry collected from Quarter 1/2006 to Quarter 4/2019 in association with the panel data and the feasible generalized least square (FGLS) model to evaluate the degree of these factors on the share prices. The results of the research show that ROE, Cons_rate, and CO2_rate are three main factors affecting the share prices of listed steel companies. Among which, ROE and Cons_rate have a positive effect, while CO2_rate has a negative effect on the share prices of listed steel companies. It also confirms the relationship between the environmental factor, construction industry factor and the stock prices. This lays foundations for recommendations for the future policies towards environmental protection and sustainable development.

  • In the present study, we studied the change patterns of adolescents' overt aggression during the middle school 2nd to the high school 1st grades and the effects of ecological factors on the change. For the research goals, we applied multi-level models to the Korean Youth Panel data. Results showed that adolescents' overt aggression decreased significantly during the period. Gender(males recoded as 1) and self-control had negative effects on the initial status(middle school 2nd grade) while the number of delinquency peers had a positive effect. On the other hand, gender and self-control showed positive effects on the change rate. The major strengths of the research are the study of various ecological factors and the longitudinal design. Few studies of adolescents' aggression have incorporated these methodological and substantive characteristics.
