The purpose of this study is to explore family relations of the Elderly influencing adjustment of the Elderly. The Sample was selected from elderly women who are older than 65years living in Seoul. Total sample consisted of 324 elderly women(married women 155, widow 169) finally selected datum sources. Factor analysis, frequency distribution, percentile, Anova, Pearson's Correlation and Stepwise multiple regression were used to take statistics. The main resluts were as follows: 1. The score of the adjustment of urban elderly woman was normal. 2. General characteristic variables such as age, self-reported health, financial status and supply of living expenses have turned out to be significant on the adjustment of the elederly women. 3. General satisfaction of married life, among the subordinate dimensions of the aging Couple relationships, has influence of the adjustment of the elderly women. 4. Among the old parent-Adult children relationships, subjective solidarity and consensual solidarity have influence on the adjustement of the aged. Besides the above two solidarity, objective solidarity has influence on the adjustment, in the case of widow. 5. Among the grandmother-grandchildren relationships, discipliner relations and material provider relations have influence on the adjustment of the married old women. Besides the above two solidarity, surrogate parenting relation have influence on the adjustment, in the case of widow.
At present, interest in the welfare of the elderly (persons over sixty-five years of age), including their dietary status, is high. Nutrition and dietary status have been investigated for both the institutionalized and non-institutionalized (independent-living) elderly in foreign country. But the dietary status of institutionalized elderly has not been investigated. Therefore, the dietary status of institutionalized elderly has been studied and compared with that of non-institutionalized elderly in the same geographic area. Three-day dietary records were obtained from fourty-five institutionalized elderly residents (twenty-five men and twenty women) and thirty two elderly living at home (sixteen men and sixteen women) in Taegu area. All nutrient intakes of the elderly women living at home and all nutrient intakes except energy intakes of the elderly men living at home were significantly higher than those of the residents of the institutionalized facilities. (p<0.005) The values of height, weight, chest circumference, and sitting height except head circumference of female elderly living in institutionalized facilities is significantly lower than those of elderly living at home. (p<0.005) In the case of men, the values of height and chest circumference of elderly living in institutionalized facilities is significantly lower than those of elderly living at home. (p<0.05)
The effect of circumvaginal muscle(CVM) exercises to improve sexual function in married women has not been investigated by currently acceptable research methods, nor have appropriate instruments and techniques to carry out such investigation been available. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of CVM exercise on sexual function, and of measuring CVM function after CVM exercises. The research tools used were a modified Derogates Sexual Function Inventory questionnaire and a pressure sensitive intravaginal balloon device. This research was conducted in Kwangju-city and Chonnam province, Korea from July, 1994 to July, 1995. The research used a non-equivalent control pre-post test quasi-experimental design. Forty-five healthy married female volunteers, aged 30-58, and were randomly assigned by age using the matching fixed-length blocks to two groups. The experimental group consisted of 21 women who were assigned a 25-minute per day CVM home exercise program for six weeks. The control group of 24 women did not do the CVM home exercises. The CVM home exercise was developed by Dougherty(1989a) and adopted to Korea by Lee (1993). Data were analyzed by $x^{2-}$test, Paired t-test, Spearman product-moment correlation using SAS /P $C^+. The results are summarized as follows : 1. There were no significant differences in the characteristics of the subjects between the experimental and control groups before the CVM home exercises. 2. Hypothesis 1 that married women who participated in CVM home exercises would have higher mean scores on the sexual function(SF) than in those who did not participate in home exercise was supported. 3. Hypothesis 2 that married women who participated in CVM home exercises would have higher vaginal pressure on SF than in those who did not participate in home exercises was supported (mean maximum pressure, t=-7.338, P<.0001, peak maximum pressure, t=-11.164, P<.0001). 4. Hypothesis 3 that the more often(number of days) and the more frequent (numbers of time per day) that married women do CVM home exercise, the higher their mean scores on SF and vaginal pressures was supported(r=0.233, P<.01 ; r=0.352, P<.05). A six week CVM home exercise program using a tape recording showed that SF can be improved. Results of this study showed that married women who exercise on a regular basis for six weeks improve their sexual function and increase the mean vaginal pressure and peak maximum pressure (tested by electronic monitor). In conclusion, CVM exercise is effective in increasing SF.SF.
The purpose of this study is to identify sevral variables which were assumed to have relationships with the role conflict and marital satisfaction of married working women, and to examine the relationship of the role conflict and marital satisfaction of married working women in Korea. The data for this study was obtained from the survey of the 262 married working women who reside in the city of Seoul employing questionnaire method. Such methods as frequency, percentile, factor analysis, analysis of variance (t-test, F-test), and Pearson's correlation were used for the statistical analysis for this study. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows; 1) The role conflict level of married working women was related to variables such as age, the number of children, work time, husband's support, job satisfaction, motivation to work outside the home. 2) The overall marital satisfaction was relatively high when they have two children and the presence of household work help. Futhermore, ut was found that marital satisfaction considerably high when husband's support and job satisfaction was highly accorded. 3) The role conflict and marital satisfaction of married working women were significantly negatively correlated.
This study was conducted to help develop women's human resources and promote married women's return to workforce. Using various data, we examined the patterns of Korean women's economic activities over the lifecycle, career discontinuation and return to the workforce. We also interviewed twenty full-time housewives who wanted to return to workforce. The interview questions included reasons for seeking employment, desired working conditions, and difficulties in finding a job. Major findings are as follows: First, there were two groups with respect to reasons why they want employment One was an economic need such as earning basic living expenses and supporting the family. The other was self-realization and social participation. Second most women wanted to do unskilled labor such as housekeeping work, whereas some young or well-educated women looked for a professional job. Third, married women preferred part-time jobs, which were compatible with their family care demands. Most of them wanted a workplace located close to home. The women with child-care responsibility preferred working at home. Fourth, regarding difficulties of returning to workforce, they pointed out vocational ability problems due to their career discontinuation, social prejudice such as gender discrimination and psychological pressure in maintaining work and family at the same time. In order to promote employment of married women, it is required not only to change social prejudices but also to increase effectiveness in policy implementation. In addition, counseling for job-search and vocational ability training programs should be provide.
This paper examines how the melancholia and death drive foregrounded in Kwak Ji-kyun's films have changed the affect and production trend of South Korean melodrama films of the late 1980s and thereafter. It particularly analyzes Kwak's The Home of Two Women (1987) as his exemplary melodrama film. Kwak is not only an auteur filmmaker of the 1980s and 1990s but was also a herald of South Korean New Sentimentalist films back then. The New Sentimentalist filmmakers have aspired to sophisticate the South Korean melodrama film not only by de-sentimentalizing it from the shimpa quality but also separating it from excessive emotion of shimpa that had long dominated the national cinema. This affective sophistication is directly linked to the sense of loss and melancholia/depression of the characters in the film caused by the death of one's beloved. This New Sentimentalist affect is best represented in Kwak's The Home of Two Women through its depiction of the internal conflicts of artists struggling to artistically sublimate the death drive and sense of loss. By textually analyzing The Home of Two Women, this paper not only reevaluates Kwak's film style but also reposition the topology of the New Sentimentalists in Korean film history.

Purpose: This study compared factors related to fear of falling among women in the early phase of old age based on hand grip strength. Methods: Researchers obtained data of 1,071 women who had participated in the 4th Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results: In both groups, fear of falling was positively correlated with falling experience within two years, osteoarthritis-related leg pain, depression, and instrumental daily life abilities; however, self-rated health was negatively correlated. In the low hand grip strength group, self-rated health, osteoarthritis-related leg pain, and hand grip strength accounted for 21.3% of the variance regarding fear of falling. In the normal hand grip strength group, age, self-rated health, fall experience within two years, osteoarthritis-related leg pain, and depression significantly accounted for 16.6% of the variance regarding fear of falling. Conclusion: In applying interventions to prevent falling in women in the early phase of old age, health care workers must verify if women have low hand grip strength and determine whether to focus on fitness improvement through exercise interventions or consider psychological interventions for depression.
The purpose of this study is to identify the possibility of unemployed married women's economic activity by analysing their willingness to work and possible influencial factors on it. This study estimates the effects of independent variables on the dependent available by using Binomial Probit Model. sample are 592 two-parent households. The results of this study are as follows ; The percentage of unemployed married women's willingness to enter into the labor market is 25.2%. Among the variables which have affected their willingness are family variables(family size, the number of children and the existence of children under the age of 6), personal variables(the age, education level and the past working experience) and financial variables(non-wage income, Engel's coefficient, expenditure o leisure activities and the subject judgement of their financial status). It is hard to accept those women's low willingness as is since the most crucial statistically was especially the children of 6 or less among the family variables. That is to say, more favorable conditions of the labor market and inexpensive day-care centres available would certainly encourage married women to be more willing to participate in economic activities as employees.
This study explores the life quality(LQ) of Korean married women compared to Korean married men's LQ, examines personal factors' and home environmental factors' influences to Korean married women's LQ via psychological factors such as social belongingness, positive emotion, self-esteem, and sense of intemal control in causal model, and explores Korean married women's perceived important factors and perceived enhancement required factors in life. The questionnaire was administered to 941 Korean married women and their husbands who have one or more children in Pusan. The results indicated that: 1. The overal and most sub dimensional LQ of Korean married women mark medium level and were lower than that of Korean married men's. Korean married women who is highly educated, keeps efficient communication with their husband, self-esteem, sense of internal control, social belongingness, and positive emotion, and possess high SES and much available resources shows higher LQ than those who doesn't. 2. The efficient communication with husband and available resources have direct and indirect influences on Korean married women's LQ. The psychological mediatory factors of these two variables' influences on women's LQ are such as social belongingness, positive emotion, self-esteem and sense of intemal control. SES has direct influence only and the educational level has indirect influence via social belongingness only on Korean married women's LQ. All these factors explain 58% of Korean married women's LQ variance. 3. Korean married women rank family health, family reconciliation, husband's success, and children's achievement as the very important factors in life. They also rank husbands success, economic abundant, family reconciliation, family health, and their self-actualization as the very required factors for enhancing the given LQ.
