Longitudinal Variation of Fish Communities in the Geum River, Korea: Application of the Concept of Beta Diversity and Local Uniqueness

  • To present the spatial variation of fish assemblages in the Geum River in Korea, the concept of beta diversity (β-diversity) estimates based on the variance of the community data table was applied. Fish communities and environmental variables were collected from 13 sampling sites along the in mid-low reaches of the River. We calculated the β-diversity and local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD) values at each site depending on the two types of data, 'occurrence' with Jaccard and Sørensen dissimilarity coefficients, and 'abundance' with Hellinger distance. Multivariate and correlation analyses were also performed to determine the relationships between LCBD and other variables, such as community indices and physicochemical and hydrological factors. The β-diversity values of fish communities in the River were estimated as 0.218 and 0.145 for occurrence data table with Jaccard and Sørensen respectively, and 0.268 for abundance data. Similar patterns of LCBD along the sampling sites were detected in two dissimilarity measurements of occurrence table, and LCBD values with abundance data were slightly different. The LCBD values are strongly correlated with community indices, and also suitable for indicating the uniqueness of fish assemblages. However, further research is needed to determine the LCBD value as an indicator of environmental variability.

A Study on the Fish Community and Various Guilds to Stream Order in Geum River Watershed

  • This study was conducted to evaluate fish fauna, species composition, and various guilds against stream orders along with analysis of fish community structure and diversity in Geum River watershed from 2005 to 2007. The total number of fish collected was 4,216 representing 12 families with 56 species. Zacco platypus was the most abundant fish species with 26% in relative abundance (RA). Korean endemic species were 24 species including Zacco koreanus, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Gobiobotia nakdongensis, and Iksookimia koreensis, etc. We also collected endangered fish species such as G. nakdongensis, Liobagrus obesus, and Pseudopungtungia nigra, etc., and their new distribution sites were found in the survey, providing some sites of the fish conservation and protection. Fish tolerance and trophic guilds analysis showed that the proportion of sensitive species, intermediate species, and tolerant species were 33.4%, 29.3%, and 37.3%, respectively and omnivores and insectivores were 48.1 % and 38.4%, respectively. Analysis of site-base study indicated that tolerant species and omnivore species were high in some polluted tributary streams (i.e., Gap and Miho stream) and sensitive and insectivore species were low. In the functional relations, expressed as simple linear regression equations, of stream order on fish metric attributes, showed that the number of species and the number of individuals increased as the stream order increases. This phenomenon was explained by greater availability of stable water volume, rich food, and higher physical habitat capacity. Such guild compositions and stream order characteristics of the river influenced the community structures, based on species diversity, dominance and evenness index in the study. This study may be used as important data in the future for comparisons of fish fauna and compositions before and after two weir (dam) constructions in the middle of Geum River by the government.

금강 주요지점에서의 환경 인자와 남조류 세포수의 배타적 인과성분석 (Analysis of Exclusive Causality between Environmental Factors and Cell Number of Cyanobacteria in Guem River)

  • Algal blooming in 4 major rivers introduces substantial impacts to water front activity. Concentrations of algae are increasing at major points along the Geum River. Ecosystem food webs can be affected by algal blooming because blue-green algae release toxic materials. Even though there have been many studies on blue-green algae, its causality to environmental factors has not been completely determined yet. This study analyzed the exclusive correlation between various hydrometeorological, water quality, and hydrologic variables and the cell number of cyanobacteria to understand causality of blue-green algae in the Geum River. A prewhitening process was introduced to remove the autocorrelation structure and periodicity, which is useful to evaluate the effective relationship between two time series.

금강수계 오염총량관리를 고려한 저수지 방류량산정 (Estimation of Reservoir Discharge to Support TMDL Management in the Geum River Basin)

  • 본 논문에서는 금강수계 오염총량관리 기본계획에서 제시된 오염부하량 자료를 기반으로 공시된 목표수질을 달성하기 위한 적정방류량을 산정하였다. 오염총량관리의 1단계로 BOD를 대상으로 총량관리가 이루어질 계획이며 향후 질소 및 인 계열로 확대될 전망이다. 총량구역별 및 행정구역별로 산정된 BOD와 TN, TP 부하량을 GIS를 활용하여 10개의 지류수계에 대하여 재분배하였고 지류수계에 해당되지 않는 구역에 대해서는 15개의 소구간으로 처리하여 반영하였다. Qual2E를 사용하여 수질모의를 실시한 결과 2010년에 대하여 산정된 장래수질에 대하여 기준부하량의 경우 약 30 CMS의 유량이 본류구간에 대하여 제시된 수질기준을 만족하기에 적절한 것으로 모의되었다.

비모수 경향분석법 적용을 통한 금강수계 총량관리 단위유역의 수질변화 연구 (A Study on the Water Quality Changes of TMDL Unit Watershed in Guem River Basin Using a Nonparametric Trend Analysis)

  • In order to assess the effect of TMDLs management and improve that in the future, it is necessary to analyze long-term changes in water quality during management period. Therefore, long term trend analysis of BOD was performed on thirty monitoring stations in Geum River TMDL unit watersheds. Nonparametric trend analysis method was used for analysis as the water quality data are generally not in normal distribution. The monthly median values of BOD during 2004~2010 were analyzed by Seasonal Mann-Kendall test and LOWESS(LOcally WEighted Scatter plot Smoother). And the effect of Total Maximum Daily Loads(TMDLs) management on water quality changes at each unit watershed was analyzed with the result of trend analysis. The Seasonal Mann-Kendall test results showed that BOD concentrations had the downward trend at 10 unit watersheds, upward trend at 4 unit watersheds and no significant trend at 16 unit watersheds. And the LOWESS analysis showed that BOD concentration began to decrease after mid-2009 at almost all of unit watersheds having no trend in implementation plan watershed. It was estimated that TMDLs improved water quality in Geum River water system and the improvement of water quality was made mainly in implementation plan unit watershed and tributaries.

Daphnia magna와 Moina macrocopa를 이용한 금강수계 하천퇴적물 생태독성 모니터링 (Toxicity Monitoring of River Sediments in the Geum River Basin using Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa)

  • In this study, toxicity monitoring of sediments collected from 25 stations in the Geum river basin was conducted using Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa. According to the results of acute toxicity tests (immobilization and mortality) of organic extracts of semdiments, Miho stream showed much less toxicity than Gap and Nonsan streams. In particular, significant toxicity was observed in both species for St.15 and St.16 sediment samples that passed through Deajeon city as a branch of Gap stream. For Nonsan stream, St.23 sediment showed high toxicity toward M. macrocopa. This site seemed to be affected by upper agricultural industrial complex. Additionally, M. macrocopa showed a higher sensitivity than D. magna for organic extracts of sediments. In the case of toxicity tests using sediment pore water and aqueous extracts, only pore water of St.27 sediment was toxic against D. magna. Toxicity identification evaluation showed that hydrogen sulfide was likely a major toxicant in the pore water.

지표수에서 GC-MS에 의한 극미량 페놀류, 다환방향족탄화수소류와 농약류의 동시 분석법 (Simultaneous determination of ultra-trace phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and pesticides in surface water by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry)

  • 지표수 중에 GC-MS에 의한 페놀, 다환방향족탄화수소 및 농약류를 포함한 17 개 유해화합물을 동시에 분석하는 방법을 개발하였다. 1.0 L의 물 시료를 분액깔대기 안에 넣고 NaCl로 포화시킨 다음 40mL methylene chloride로 추출하였다. 이 방법은 1.0-10 ng/L 범위의 정량한계를 보였고 22% 이내의 정밀도를 보였다. 확립한 방법을 사용하여 35 지역의 금강 물 70 개 시료를 분석한 결과 유해화합물이 1.1-26,604 ng/L의 농도범위로 검출되었으며 측정값은 외국에서 확립한 준거치를 초과하는 값은 없었다. 이 측정방법은 지표수에서 유해화합물에 대한 국가모니터링사업에 사용할 때 효율적인 것으로 판단된다.

GC-MS에 의한 지표수에서 1,4-Dioxane의 측정 (Measurement of 1,4-dioxane in surface water by headspace GC-MS)

  • 1,4-dioxane은 국제 암연구소에서 2B의 발암물질로 분류하고 있는 물질이다.지표수 중에 1,4-dioxane을 headspace gas chromatographic mass spectrometry에 의해 측정하였다. 시료 5 mL를 10 mL 헤드스페이스 vial에서 넣고 NaCl로 포화시킨 후 내부표준물질로 1,4-dioxane-d8 첨가한 후 $90^{\circ}C$에서 30분간 가열하였다. 위의 방법을 사용하여 금강 22개 지점에서 2012년 6월과 9월 시료 채취하여 분석한 결과 $0.49-43.0{\mu}g/L$ (평균 $2.0{\mu}g/L$)의 범위로 약 30%의 빈도로 검출되었다.
