Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the impact of abuse experience and coping styles on suicidal ideation in Korean elders. Methods: Data were collected from the 2011 Korean National Survey on the Elderly. The participants were 10,537 elders aged 65 or older who had replied to the question on suicidal ideation. Socio-demographic and health related factors, abuse experience, and coping style were included as the influence factors of suicidal ideation. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$-test and logistic stepwise regression with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The prevalence of abuse experience among the elders was 12.7% and that of suicidal ideation was 11.2%. Elders with abuse experience (OR=2.79, 95% CI=2.39~3.26) were more likely to have suicidal ideation but those with an active coping style (OR=0.69, 95% CI=0.57~0.84) were less likely to have suicidal ideation even with other influence factors controlled. Conclusion: Abuse experience of the elderly was a major risk factor that increased suicidal ideation, and active coping style was a protective factor that reduced suicidal ideation. These findings show that careful attention to elderly abuse and education for active coping style are necessary to reduce suicidal ideation among the elderly.

Methods and materials: The research participants included 2,750 elderly aged 65 or above, of which 1,487 were from dong unit and 1,263 were from eup myeon units according to the raw data of 2011 Survey on Elderly Status. All collected data were analyzed using cross tabulation of SPSSWIN(ver 21.0) program and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The results were as follows. First, the factors that influenced the suicidal ideation of urban and rural elderly living alone included degree of depression, experience of abuse, and nutritional management status. Second, the suicidal ideation of urban elderly living alone was affected by the emotional support of their children who live apart and their grandchildren. Third, the suicidal ideation of rural elderly living alone was affected by the emotional support of their kin (including siblings).
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analysis the determinants and trend of suicidal ideation the elderly in Korea. Methods: This study participants were selected the elderly over the age of 55 from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2001(n=1,122), 2005(n=2,098), and 2010(n=2,402). Statistical analysis methods used in this study were $x^2$-test, logistic regression analysis and other basic statistics such frequency, percentage using SPSS version 21.0. Results: In 2001, the influencing factors of suicidal ideation was spouses, subjective health status and stress recognition. In 2005, the influencing factors of suicidal ideation were spouses, subjective health status, chronic disease amount, activity limitation, depression experience and stress recognition. In 2010, the influencing factors of suicidal ideation were elderly, education level, subjective health status, activity limitation, depression experience and stress recognition. Conclusions: The health education considering the characteristics of each elderly group should be developed and applied to prevent adults' suicidal ideation because the factors influencing suicidal ideation were revealed differently between the elderly group.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the incidence and associated factors of suicidal ideation among the elderly according to residence area. Methods: This cross-sectional study used secondary data from the 2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-2). A representative sample of 1,464 men and women aged 65 and over was selected. Rao-scott $X^2$-test, multiple logistic regression models based on sampling scheme of the data were used. Results: Of the 1,464 respondents, 22.4% had experienced suicidal ideation during the past year. Higher incidence of suicidal ideation was observed in rural seniors (23.7%) than in urban seniors (21.1%). The incidence of suicidal ideation showed correlation with age, education level, depression, stress, lying in a sick bed, and current smoking status among elderly living in urban areas. However, among elderly living in rural areas, the incidence of suicidal ideation showed correlation with household income, depression, stress, and daily activity. Conclusion: Based on the results, nurses should manage effective and individualized nursing interventions for elders in planning suicide prevention programs with consideration for residence areas, because there were differences in the factors affecting suicidal ideation among elders according to residence area.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of Activities Daily Living(ADL)(physical health), depression(mental health), social participation(social health) on suicidal ideation among community dwelling elderly. Methods: Samples were obtained from 184 people aged over 65 years old in one county of Kyungsangbukdo. The survey samples were divided into the presence and absence group of the suicidal ideation. Data were analyzed with x2 test, t-test and logistic regression analysis. Results: First, suicidal ideation were significantly different by religion. Secondly, after adjusting for socio-economic variables, logistic regression analysis showed that only depression was associated with higher odds of suicidal ideation Conclusions: It was suggested to develop customized depression and suicide prevention program were required to reduce suicide rate of the elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to identify factors affecting suicidal ideation of the low-income elderly. Methods: The study subjects were lowest-income(basic living allowance) and lower-income elders who were registered for home visiting services at five District Health Centers in Seoul. Interview data were collected from 280 elders and analyzed. Using SPSS/WIN 21, $x^2$-test and t-test were conducted to analyze the relationship between the subjects' characteristics and their suicidal ideation, and logistic regression was done to identify factors affecting suicidal ideation. Results: Of the subjects, 48.6% had suicidal ideation for the last one year. Self-evaluated psychological status, quality of sleep, depression, and loneliness were affecting factors to the subjects' suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Psychological and social factors are strongly related to the suicidal ideation of the elderly who are living alone in metropolitan areas. Therefore, home visiting services should supply physical, psychological and social cares continuously to the low-income elderly, especially those who live alone in metropolitan areas.
The suicide rate in the elderly is continually increasing. Effective suicide prevention requires that factors affecting suicidal ideation are specifically identified and personalized intervention programs are developed. This study aimed to identify the influencing factors of suicidal ideation in Korean elderly. The data of the 2012 Korean National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed by using the SPSS program. Frequency, percentile, Chi-square test, multiple logistic regression were used. The influencing factors of suicidal ideation were education, income, exercise, perceived stress and depression. The Odds Ratio of the depression was 5.68 and the Odds Ratio of the perceived stress was 3.45. This study suggested that elderly suicidal prevention programs should be developed in preventing and reducing stress and depression.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate suicidal ideation and its associated factors according to sex in the elderly, by focusing on socio-demographic and health characteristics. Methods: Data were derived from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-2, 2011). The subjects were 1,464 elderly aged 65 years or more (620 male and 844 female). The SPSS/WIN 21.0 program was used for data analysis. Results: Suicidal ideation was positively associated with depression and stress in both male and female subjects. For elderly men, those aged 75 years or more, had no spouse, and had activity limitations showed a higher suicidal ideation risk. For elderly women, those who had low a education level and were perceived to be unhealthy showed a higher suicidal ideation risk. Conclusion: Nurses should consider sex differences when designing suicide prevention programs for the elderly.
Objectives: The study was to examine major factors that affect suicidal ideation of elderly in urban areas. Methods: The subjects were 302 elders who voluntarily participated in the study. The instruments for this study were scale for suicidal ideation(19 items), family concord (20 items), CED-depression(20 items) and family inventor of life events and changes(FILE, 22 items). Frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson' correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression with SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: The average score of suicidal ideation was 14.88. Suicidal ideation was positively related to depression and stress, but negatively related to family concord, depression, family concord, stress and health status accounted for 86.1% of the variance in suicidal ideation. These results suggest that family concord, depression and stress can be potential risk factors for suicide of elderly. Conclusions: These findings may give useful information for developing suicidal prevention program on old age.
