  • Apartment is characterized by its various households occupying a unit each in the same building, and its shared space is important in that it supports the living, exchange of information and communication between neighbors, thereby creating a sense of community. This study focused on coming up with designs to vitalize the shared space in the apartment, and to do that, Christopher Alexander's pattern language was applied to analyze the patterns found in the apartment shared space, find improvements and propose the design methods that reflect the unique characteristics of designs in Korea. The study is mainly based on literary review and field research. (1) The definition and composition of shared space and Christopher Alexander's pattern language are examined; (2) The field research is performed to analyze the patterns in the shared space of the apartments that have been planned recently in order to find the problems and elements that can be improved; and The above is reflected and proposed as a design method. The study will help rediscover the significance of space by proposing the methodology for shared space design, encouraging the use of shared space and contributing to the enhancement of community.

  • Aerating hydroturbines have recently been proposed as an effective way to mitigate the problem of low dissolved oxygen in the discharge of hydroelectric power plants. The design of such a hydroturbine requires a precise understanding of the dependence of the generated bubble size distribution upon the operating conditions (viz. liquid velocity, air ventilation rate, hydrofoil configuration, etc.) and the consequent rise in dissolved oxygen in the downstream water. The purpose of the current research is to investigate the effect of location of air injection on the resulting bubble size distribution, thus leading to a quantitative analysis of aeration statistics and capabilities for two turbine blade hydrofoil designs. The two blade designs differed in their location of air injection. Extensive sets of experiments were conducted by varying the liquid velocity, aeration rate and the hydrofoil angle of attack, to characterize the resulting bubble size distribution. Using a shadow imaging technique to capture the bubble images in the wake and an in-house developed image analysis algorithm, it was found that the hydrofoil with leading edge ventilation produced smaller size bubbles as compared to the hydrofoil being ventilated at the trailing edge.

  • Chapter 1 and 2 of this study examined the methodology of modern storytelling using the hero narrative structure. This involved analyses of Joseph Campbell's monomyth structure, which is the prototype model of modern storytelling and Christopher Vogler's story structure in which the monomyth structure is classified into 3 Acts and 12 Stages. In addition, the movie 'Captain America' was analyzed based on Vogler's narrative structure theory. According to the analyses results, the hero of 'Captain America' fully follows Christopher Vogler's hero narrative structure but in some cases, he does not follow the existing hero narrative structure. It is interpreted that this is because heroes of modern tales have different birth backgrounds from mythical heroes. There is also a difference even in the stage where a hero completes all adventures and returns home between modern tales and myths due to different social backgrounds. Therefore, these findings provide a basis for modification and supplementation of a modern hero epic. Through this analysis, the modified modern hero narrative structure is evaluated to be appropriate as a basic model for modern storytelling. Further, it is expected that those who frame a film script can complete a new hero epic while following the structure of syntagmatic systems by selecting a level among Northrop Frye's paragmatic systems based on this structure and considering story themes and heroes' personality and characteristics.

  • The recent work by the authors (see, Withers, 1999; Withers and McGavin, 2006; Withers and Nadarajah, 2006) provided new expressions for repeated upper tail integrals of the univariate normal density and so also for the general Hermite function. Here we derive new expressions for repeated lower tail integrals of the same. The calculations involve the use of Moran's L-function and the Airy function. In particular, the Hermite functions are expressed in terms of Moran's L-function and vice versa.

  • The extent of biological diversity being revealed by molecular techniques accentuates the need to develop methods to isolate and culture the large numbers of microorganisms that remain to be studied. The discovery and characterization of novel microorganisms will provide information useful in understanding microbial ecosystems and have the potential to lead to new products for the biotechnology industry. In this review, the use of innovative techniques and exploration of unusual ecosystems, that have begun to address the challenge of isolating the "uncultured" members of the microbial population, are examined.

  • The effect of braid construction parameters on yarn cross-sectional shape is presented in this paper. The location of the yam within the braid unit cell is quantified by a compaction factor. A range of braided fabrics were produced and optically measured for actual yarn cross-sectional shape. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental values shows good correlation. Design curves can be produced with the developed model to allow selection of appropriate braid process parameter to create yarns with desired cross-sectional geometries.
