  • In the present paper, the sloshing resistance performance of an LNG carrier insulation system is evaluated by fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. For this analysis, the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method is adopted to accurately calculate the structural behavior induced by internal LNG motion of a KC-1 type LNG carrier cargo tank. In addition, the global-local analysis method is introduced to reduce computational time and cost. The global model is built from shell elements to reduce the sloshing analysis time. The proposed novel analysis techniques can potentially be used to evaluate the structural integrity of LNG carrier insulation systems.

  • In this paper, forward and reverse analysis is introduced in order to estimate the elastic-plastic properties from a power-law hardening bulk specimen materials with one simple spherical indentation impression test. In order to verify the reliability of the reverse analysis, we have simulated about a large range of materials that essentially cover all engineering materials, using ABAQUS(6.91) program. Then, we could obtained the fitting functions and plastic parameters from the numerical analysis results. Next, through the procedure of reverse analysis we can obtain the yield stress and power-law exponent. Finally, obtain good agreement between the result from reverse analysis and initial input data from experiment.

  • Nonlinear robust attitude controller for 3-axis stabilized spacecraft is designed. Robust stability analysis for nonlinear spacecraft system with disturbance is conducted. External disturbances and parametric uncertainties decrease Spacecraft's attitude pointing accuracy. Sliding Mode Control(SMC) provides stability of system in the face of these disturbances and uncertainties. The concept of quadratic boundedness and quadratic stability are applied to the robust analysis for the nonlinear spacecraft system subject to bounded disturbance torques. Numerical simulation is conducted to compare the analysis result and actual nonlinear simulation. The simulation show that analysis result is valid.

  • This paper mentions a fault tree analysis using not probability but natural language and fuzzy theory, Reliability estimate of each basic event and dependence level estimate among subsystems are expressed by linguistic terms. Analysis results are also expressed by natural language. The meaning of linguistic terms is expressed by a fuzzy set. In the presented analysis approach parametrized operations of fuzzy sets are considered so that analyst's subjectivity can be introduced into the analysis. This paper gives the Chernobyl accident as an example of the fuzzy fault tree analysis using linguistic terms.

  • We often extract a new feature from the original features for the purpose of reducing the dimensions of feature space and better classification. In this paper, we show feature extraction method based on independent component analysis can be used for classification. Entropy and mutual information are used for the selection of ordered features. Performance of classification based on independent component analysis is compared with principal component analysis for three real data sets.

  • The characteristics of the buckling analysis module for stiffened composite structures were studied in this paper. Composite stiffened structures have geometrical asymmetry and material properties asymmetry. Due to these reason, postbuckling analysis was essential and the characteristics of postbuckling analysis modules for ABAQUS were researched. Static analysis module was considered. By considering the material nonlinearity, progressive failure mechanism was applied and buckling strength was estimated

  • Shape design optimization for linear elasticity problem is performed using isogeometric analysis method. In many design optimization problems for real engineering models, initial raw data usually comes from CAD modeler. Then designer should convert this CAD data into finite element mesh data because conventional design optimization tools are generally based on finite element analysis. During this conversion there is some numerical error due to a geometry approximation, which causes accuracy problems in not only response analysis but also design sensitivity analysis. As a remedy of this phenomenon, the isogeometric analysis method is one of the promising approaches of shape design optimization. The main idea of isogeometric analysis is that the basis functions used in analysis is exactly same as ones which represent the geometry, and this geometrically exact model can be used shape sensitivity analysis and design optimization as well. In shape design sensitivity point of view, precise shape sensitivity is very essential for gradient-based optimization. In conventional finite element based optimization, higher order information such as normal vector and curvature term is inaccurate or even missing due to the use of linear interpolation functions. On the other hands, B-spline basis functions have sufficient continuity and their derivatives are smooth enough. Therefore normal vector and curvature terms can be exactly evaluated, which eventually yields precise optimal shapes. In this article, isogeometric analysis method is utilized for the shape design optimization. By virtue of B-spline basis function, an exact geometry can be handled without finite element meshes. Moreover, initial CAD data are used throughout the optimization process, including response analysis, shape sensitivity analysis, design parameterization and shape optimization, without subsequent communication with CAD description.

  • Common factor analysis and principal component analysis represent two technically distinctive approaches to exploratory factor analysis. Much of the psychometric literature recommends the use of common factor analysis instead of principal component analysis. Nonetheless, factor analysts use principal component analysis more frequently because they believe that principal component analysis could yield (relatively) less accurate estimates of factor loadings compared to common factor analysis but most often produce similar pattern of factor loadings, leading to essentially the same factor interpretations. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the relative performance of these two approaches in terms of factor pattern recovery under different experimental conditions of sample size, overdetermination, and communality. The results show that principal component analysis performs better in factor recovery with small sample sizes (below 200). It was further shown that this tendency is more prominent when there are a small number of variables per factor. The present results are of practical use for factor analysts in the field of marketing and the social sciences.

  • Numerical analysis of slop stability is presented using seismic displacement, response seismic coefficient, and earthquake response analysis methods. In seismic displacement and response seismic coefficient methods, horizontal static seismic force is considered as 0.2g while vertical static seismic force is not considered in analysis. For earthquake response analysis Hahinoha-wave is applied, It is found from result that analysis using response seismic coefficient method is much more conservative than that using seismic displacement method Also, analysis result using earthquake response analysis method is somewhat less conservative about 25% when compared with that using seismic displacement method.
