  • We fabricated textured Ag substrates for YBCO coated conductor and evaluated the effects of annealing temperature on microstructural evolution, texture formation, and surface morphology. Ag ingot, as an initial specimen, was prepared by plasma arc melting(PAM). Subsequently, the ingot was cold rolled to 100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick tape and annealed at temperatures of 600-80$0^{\circ}C$. The texture and surface morphology of the substrate were characterized by pole-figure and atomic force microscopy(AFM) profile, respectively. It was observed that a strong {110}<110> texture was formed after annealing and its symmetry improved as annealing temperature increased. The full-width at half-maximum(FWHM) of {110}<110> pole was as sharp as 10$^{\circ}$ for the substrate annealed at 80$0^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, it was found that the thermal grooving and faceting became remarkable as annealing temperature increased : root-mean-square(RMS) roughness of the substrate annealed at 80$0^{\circ}C$ was 39.2 nm. The substrate of strong texture and smooth surface, fabricated in our study, is considered to be suitable for use as a substrate for the epitaxial deposition of superconductor film.

  • The crystalline alignment of Ni substrates textured by RABiTS have a probability distribution in the surface plane. This makes it difficult to obtain a high quality of textures over all the range of a long Ni tape. In order to improve the textures of Ni tape, we have investigated a new method of texturing. We obtained non-cube textured Ni tapes by rolling and annealing a high purity Ni. In these tapes, the [001]-axes were tilted around the rolling direction, and the [100]-axes were parallel to the rolling direction. The average grain size was several cm$^2$. We deposited buffer layer (CeO$^2$/YSZ/CeO$^2$) and YBCO on those tapes. We found out that a YBCO film with grows normal with respect to the surface and this feature is independent of the tilting angles of the Ni [001]-axes.

  • CeO$_2$ and NiO buffers for YBCO coated conductors were deposited on biaxially textured Ni substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) and the deposition behavior were investigated. The degree of texture of deposited CeO$_2$ and NiO films was strongly dependent on the deposition temperature(T$\sub$d/) and oxygen partial pressure(P$\sub$O$_2$/). ($\ell$00) textured films were well deposited at specific deposition temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. The in-plane and out of plane textures estimated form the full width half maximum of the pole figure peaks were less than 10$^{\circ}$. The surface morphology showed that the CeO$_2$ films consisted of columnar grains grown normal to the Ni substrates, while NiO films were slate and clean like a mirror. The surface roughness of both films estimated by atomic force microscopy(AFM) were as smooth as 3-10 m. The growth rate of the films is much faster than that of other physical deposition methods.

  • We report the effect of Ca doping in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) thin films grown on the Rolling- Assisted, Biaxially Textured Substrates (RABiTS) with the architecture of $CeO_2/YSZ/CeO_2/Ni$. Critical currents of bilayer and trilayer structures of $YBCO/Y_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$/(YCaBCO) as well as undoped YBCO for comparison have been measured in a wide range of temperatures and fields. For $6-8^{\circ}$ grain boundaries, 30% Ca-doping in bilayer structure enhances $J_c$ as high as 35%. The enhancement is larger at low temperatures and at magnetic fields. On the other hand, 30% Ca-doping in trilayer structure reduces $J_c$ as high as 60%. Combined with slightly lower $T_c$, this indicates that Ca is overdoped in this structure and degrades GBs.

  • We fabricated 18cm YBCO coated conductor comprising a YBCO superconducting film and CeO$_2$/YSZ/CeO$_2$ buffer films deposited on a biaxially textured Ni tape. For those film fabrications, we developed a new method, the cylindrical holder in a double chamber. This is alternative to the reel-to-reef method which is commonly tried to fabricate a long YBCO coated tape. We will discuss about the superconducting properties of the 18cm long YBCO coated tapes.

  • The critical currents of sintered $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5+\delta}$ were measured as the variables with the corrosive time in the humid air. The corrosive process was studied by means of the current changes. Ag coating on the textured YBCO and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating on the sintered YBCO were prepared. The critical current densities of different YBCO samples with and without coatings were compared. Both Ag coating and PTFE coating can well protect YBCO from moisture and $CO_{2}$.

  • Good quality superconducting $YBa_2Cu_30_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) thin films were grown on Hastelloy (Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) with yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) buffer layers by in situ pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. Generally, Hastelloy exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion, fatigue, thermal shock, impact, and erosion. However, it is difficult to make films on flexible metallic substrates due to interdiffusion problems between metallic substrates and superconducting overlayers. To overcome this difficulty, it is necessary to use YSZ buffer layer since it will not only limit the interdiffusion process but also minimize the surface microcrack formation due to smaller mismatch between the film and the substrate. In order to enhance the crystallinity of YBCO films on metallic substrates, YSZ buffer layers were grown at various temperatures different from the deposition temperature of YBCO films. On YSZ buffer layer grown at higher temperature than that for depositing YBCO film, the YBCO thin film was found to be textured with c-axis orientation by x-ray diffraction and had a zero-resistance critical temperature of about 85K.

  • A ring comprising a coated conductor was fabricated. A ring was made first using a biaxially textured Ni tape whose two ends were connected by means of the atomic diffusion bonding technique. Then buffer layers and a YBCO film were deposited on it. All the films were well textured as confirmed by XRD pole figures. The B-H loops, where B and H are the magnetic field at the center of the ring and the applied field respectively, were measured as a function of temperature. The persistent current density (J$_c$) flowing circularly was estimated from the remanent field of B. In the range of temperature from 72K to 20K, J$_c$ changed from zero to 2${\times}$1 0$^5$A/cm$^2$.

  • In the YBCO matrix, 10wt.% Y$_2$BaCuO$\_$5/ (211 phase) was added, the final 211 content of YBCO made by MTG process could reach about 20wt.% which was the optimum value for the critical current density. And also 10wt.% Ag was added in the matrix of YBCO, which was nearly about the saturate solubility of silver in textured YBCO. SmBaCuO crystal was grown by the melted-condensed process. A 5${\times}$5${\times}$2㎣ single crystal of SmBaCuO was used to be the seed in the preparation of YBCO. It was proved the orientation of YBCO was the same as the orientation of the SmBaCuO seed. The oxygen absorption of bulk oriented YBCO was studied and the heat treatment of oxygen absorption would be in flowing oxygen, at 400$^{\circ}C$ for about 24 hours. the magnetic hysteresis loops were measured by Vibrating Smaple Magnetometer and the J$\_$c/ was calcuated by means of Bean's model.
