ASTC Block-Size Determination Method based on PSNR Values (PSNR 값 기반의 자동화된 ASTC 블록 크기 결정 방법)

  • ASTC is one of the standard texture formats supported in OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.0 (and later versions), and it has been increasingly used on mobile platforms (Android and iOS). ASTC's most important feature is the block size configuration, thereby providing a trade-off between compression quality and rates. With the higher number of textures, however, it is difficult to manually determine the optimal block sizes of each texture. To solve the problem, we present a new approach based on PSNR values to automatically determine the ASTC block size. A brute-force approach, which compresses a texture on all block sizes and compares the PSNR values of the compressed textures, can increase the compression time by up to 14 times. In contrast, our three-step approach minimizes the compression-time overhead. According to our experiments on a texture set including 64 various textures, our method determined the block sizes from 4×4 to 12×12 and reduced the size of compressed files by 68%.

High Temperature Deformation Behavior of Ti-Al Intermetallic Compound and Orientation Distribution of Lamellae Structure (Ti-Al금속간화합물의고온변형거동및라멜라조직의결정방위분포)

  • High temperature uniaxial compression tests in the alpha single phase region were carried out on the Ti -43mo1%Al intermetallic compound, in order to obtain oriented lamellar microstructure. The compression deformation temperatures and strain rates are from 1573k to 1623k and 1.0x10$^{-4}$ s to 5.0x10$^{-3}$ s, respectively. Fully lamellar microstructure was observed after the uniaxial compression deformation in a single phase region followed by cooling to room temperature. Lamellar colony diameter depended on strain rates and test temperatures. The diameter varied between 8601m and 300fm. Stress-strain curve showed a work softening and the size of lamellar colony diameter varied depending on peak stresses. This shows the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization. Texture measurements after the uniaxial compression deformation, showed the development of fiber during dynamic recrystallization.   • Crystallographic texture evolution during forming processes has a significant effect on the anisotropic flow behavior of crystalline material. In this study, a crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM), which incorporates the crystal plasticity constitutive law into a three-dimensional finite element method, was used to investigate texture evolution of a face-centered-cubic material - an aluminum alloy. A rate-dependent polycrystalline theory was fully implemented within an in-house program, CAMPform3D. Each integration point in the element was considered to be a polycrystalline aggregate consisting of a large number of grains, and the deformation of each grain in the aggregate was assumed to be the same as the macroscopic deformation of the aggregate. The texture evolution during three different deformation modes - uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, and plane strain compression - was investigated in terms of pole figures and compared to experimental data available in the literature.

  • 3D texture mapping generates highly natural visual effects in which objects appear carved from lumps of materials rather than laminated with thin sheets as in 2D texture mapping. Storing 3D texture images in a table for fast mapping computations, instead of evaluating procedures on the fly, however, has been considered impractical due to the extremely high memory requirement. Recently, a practical real-time 3D texture mapping technique was proposed in [11], where they attempt to resolve the potential texture memory problem by compressing 3D textures using a wavelet-based encoding method. In this paper, we consider two other encoding schemes that could also be applied to the compression-based 3D texture mapping. In particular, we extend the vector quantization and FXT1 for 3D texture compression, and compare their performance with the wavelet-based encoding scheme.

  • A new scheme for image compression based on texture expression in the wavelet transform domain is presented. After taking wavelet transform, using the fact that the high-pass filtered bands has a lower variance than that of the original, a texture expression for the homogeneous polygonal regions can be more efficiently performed in the wavelet transform domain. The estimated texture parameters are transmitted to the receiver and later used for reconstruction after storing in disk. In most cases, the proposed method has yields good results with respects to the compression ratio and reconstructed image quality when our system has compared to conventional SPIHT scheme.

  • In the present study, the effects of initial texture on the twinning formation of AZ31 Mg rolled sheet was investigated. Uniaxial compression tests were performed on samples cut along the normal direction and rolling direction of rolled AZ31 Mg alloy sheet at various temperatures (RT, 200, 250, 300, 350, $400^{\circ}C$) with the 0.01/s strain rate. Pole figure of rolling planes showed that basal planes of most gain were located parallel to the rolling direction. After compression test, microstructures and stress-strain curves results indicated that active deformation twining occurred only at the specimen cut along the rolling direction. The slip-twin transition with the increase of temperature was also investigated.

  • High temperature deformation behavior and texture evolution during ECAP(equal channel angular pressing) of Zn-0.3Al alloy were investigated in this study. ECAP was conducted at temperatures from $40^{\circ}C$ to $160^{\circ}C$ on the plate type specimen of 5mm thickness and 20mm width. The specimens obtained by ECAP showed typical texture with basal poles tilted away from the ND toward ED. A series of compression tests was carried out at temperatures from RT to $200^{\circ}C$ under the strain rate from 0.03 to 10/s. With the strain rate increased, serration behavior was observed to be prominent.

An Image Coding Technique Using the Image Segmentation (영상 영역화를 이용한 영상 부호화 기법)

  • An image coding technique based on a segmentation, which utilizes a simplified description of regions composing an image, is investigated in this paper. The proposed coding technique consists of 3 stages: segmentation, contour coding. In this paper, emphasis was given to texture coding in order to improve a quality of an image. Split-and-merge method was employed for a segmentation. In the texture coding, a linear predictive coding(LPC), along with approximation technique based on a two-dimensional polynomial function was used to encode texture components. Depending on a size of region and a mean square error between an original and a reconstructed image, appropriate texture coding techniques were determined. A computer simulation on natural images indicates that an acceptable image quality at a compression ratio as high as 15-25 could be obtained. In comparison with a discrete cosine transform coding technique, which is the most typical coding technique in the first-generation coding, the proposed scheme leads to a better quality at compression ratio higher than 15-20.

  • Magnesium alloys have been rapidly attracting as lightweight structural material in various industry fields because of having high specific strength and low density. It is well known that the crystallographic texture plays an important role in improvement of poor room temperature ductility of magnesium alloys. In this study, high-temperature plane strain compression deformation was conducted on extruded AZ80 magnesium alloy at 723K by varying the strain rates ranging from 5.0×10-3s-1 to 5.0×10-2s-1 in order to investigate the behaviors of texture formation. It was found that texture formation behaviors in three kinds of specimens were affected by continuous and discontiuous deformation mechanism.

  • A new texture segmentation-based image coding technique which performs segmentation based on roughness of textural regions and properties of the human visual system (HVS) is presented for multime-dia teleconference. The segmentation is accomplished by thresholding the fractal dimension so that textural regions are classified into three texture classes; perceived constant intensity, smooth texture, and rough texture. An image coding system with high compression and good image quality is achieved by developing an efficient coding technique for each segment boundary and each texture class. We compare the coding efficiency of this technique with that of a well established technique (discrete cosine transform (DCT) image coding).
