  • Colorimetric and wash fastness data after repeated wash cycles of Poly Lactic Acid(PLA) fiber were examined with C. I. Vat Blue 1, also other comparing 2 dyes (C. I. Vat Blue 35, C. I. Vat Blue 5), in this study. The fastness of three vat dyes on PLA fiber to repeated washing according to KS K 0430 A-2 regulation increased with dyeing temperatures. The L values of the dyed material gradually increased with increasing numbers of wash. Also the f(k) values were decreased reversely. During repeated washing, the vagrant dyes were deposited especially on nylon, polyester, cotton of the adjacent multifiber. C. I. Vat Blue 5 displayed lowest color change to repeated washing of the three dyes used.

  • In order to acquire more comprehensive understanding of textile composites, the processing-microstructure-performance relationships for a variety of material systems, reinforcing schemes and processing technologies should be established. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the integrated analysis of three-dimensional (3-D) 2-step braided composites. The analysis includes the geometric model of unit cells, identification of key process parameters and processing windows due to limiting geometries of yarn jamming, and prediction of elastic constants of the composite. The coordinate transformation and averaging of stiffness and compliance constants are utilized in the prediction of elastic constants. Since there are several types of unit cells in the thickness and width directions of the composites, characterization of mechanical properties is based upon the macro-cell, which occupies the entire cross-section and the unit pitch length of the sample. The performance map demonstrates that a wide range of elastic properties can be achieved by varying the geometric and process parameters.

  • Silk is a textile material, as well as one of the oldest biomaterials. However, the recent progress of biomedical science and technology has led to the replacement of silk by various biomaterials based on synthetic polymers. Despite the wide variety of biomaterials available, these materials suffer certain limitations that prevent them from meeting the various demands of the medical field. Therefore, silk continues to attract considerable interest as a promising biomaterial. This paper explains the fundamentals of silk protein, and reviews the many applications of silk biomedical polymers.

  • Radioisotopes and their related techniques have recently been applied for scientific conservation works of cultural property and resulted many excellent findings or conservation data which could never be achieved by means of other techniques. Radiocarbon dating have widely been applied for dating the antique of organic origin, whereas the determination of radioactive contents in metal, ceramics, environmental soil, and classical objects could be able to afford many useful informations on the age, genuiness, and archeological significances as it had been produced. Trace quantity of contents of each antique have successfully been analyzed by means of radioactivation analysis or radio active tracer techniques, which could afford important technical data and results for tile conservation of each object. Radiography have also been applied for detecting the internal defects of metal objects and furthermore β-and γ-ray radiography were proved to be effective for such thin material as textile, painting, and fibres. In this article the detailed principle and procedures of each technique were presented so that the society could be able to make efforts to familiarize all concerns with these modern trends of the conservation techniques of cultural property.

  • Poly(hydroxamic acid) resin beads were prepared and complexed with various metal ions. We used IR spectroscopy to investigate the structure of metal complex. It proved that the products formed by introduction of metal ions gave stable and colored complex. It was found that the resin bead as synthesized would be a good column packing material for continuous extraction. Energy dispersive spectroscopy was use to study the distribution of metal ions in the resin matrix. It could be tentatively concluded that adsorption and diffusion of metal ions in the chelating resins mainly depended on the loading of the resin matrix which indicated interacting sites with metal ions.

  • A rapidly aging Korean population highlights the importance of investigating the actual state and needs of clothing for the elderly to provide basic information for a future senior industry. This paper surveyed clothing purchasing behaviors. The sample of this survey consisted of 210 females aged 55 over who live in Dajeoun and Nonsan. The data were analyzed by using SPSS. The major findings are as follows. First, most elderly women have bought the ready-made clothes in local markets. Second, the major consideration of clothing purchasing behavior was the possibility of outdoor wearing and color. They were satisfied with ready-made clothes because of the convenience to buy, design, and the necessity of the clothing brands for aged people. Third, they preferred pure cotton or mixed cotton even though they possessed the mixed cotton or synthetic fiber in clothing materials. Respondents preferred the feeling, heat-retaining property, and absorptiveness in textiles. The result indicates the demand for various material applications of functional textiles for elderly women.

  • This study presents results on the numerical simulation of Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow in a channel obstructed by an asymmetric array of obstacles for clarifying the descriptive ability of current non-Newtonian constitutive equations. Jones and Walters (1989) have performed the corresponding experiment that clearly demonstrates the characteristic difference among the flow patterns of the various liquids. In order to appropriately account for flow properties, the Navier-Stokes, the Carreau viscous and the Leonov equations are employed for Newtonian, shear thinning and extension hardening liquids, respectively. Making use of the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the Leonov model in the computational scheme, we have obtained stable solutions up to relatively high Deborah numbers. The peculiar characteristics of the non-Newtonian liquids such as shear thinning and extension hardening seem to be properly illustrated by the flow modeling. In our opinion, the results show the possibility of current constitutive modeling to appropriately describe non-Newtonian flow phenomena at least qualitatively, even though the model parameters specified for the current computation do not precisely represent material characteristics.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the differences of compressional properties in various wool fabrics which have different structural conditions in composing ratio of wool fabric, count of material yarn and cloth count of fabric. The result of the study are summarized as follows ; 1. The wool fabrics woven with lower with lower count yarn are superior to those woven with higher count yarn in the property of compression and resiliance of compression. 2. All wool fabrics are superior to polyester/wool blended fabrics in the property of compression and inferior in the linearity. 3. In general as the cloth count of fabrics increases, the percentage of compression decrease and the linearity increases proportionally in wool fabrics.

  • In order to improve dyeability of poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) micro filament fabrics, the effect of the prior oxygen low temperature plasma on the subsequent dyeing(deep dyeing, printing) was examined in various conditions. The apparent concentration of dyed PET micro filament fabrics was increased by O2plasma treatment. Higher discharge power levels and higher reactor pressure values created more significant effect. The wettability was significantly increased by O2 plasma treatment. Therefore, it is predicted that introducing hydrophilic group on the surface of material can improve the apparent concentration of PET micro filament fabrics.

  • In this article, silk fabric was treated with silver nitrate (AgNO3) as oxidizing agent, with conditions such as concentration, and treating time, and subsequently treated with reducing agents such as sodium boron hydride (NaBH4) and sodium sulfide (Na2S) to obtain cathodic coloration. After coloration of silk fabric, dyeing properties (K/S value), colorfastnesses such as wash, rubbing and light, and antibacterial activity property were examined. AgNO3 treating time and reducing time did not influence K/S value, whereas the pH value at alkaline region showed a high K/S value of silk fabric. The cathodic colorations of silk fabric with both of reducing agents at 30C have excellent color fastnesses. Also the high antibacterial activities were obtained by the treatment with silver nitrate even at 1% of lower concentration.
