  • This review covers current developments in molecular-based studies of the structure and function of carboxylesterases. To allay the confusion of the classic classification of carboxylesterase isozymes, we have proposed a novel nomenclature and classification of mammalian carboxylesterases on the basis of molecular properties. In addition, mechanisms of regulation of gene expression of carboxylesterases by xenobiotics, and involvement of carboxylesterase in drug metabolism are also described.

  • The reclamation area of Saemangeum(Kunsan) located between 126。10´E - 126。50´ E and 35。35´N - 36。05´N at the western coast of Korea. The construction of the 33km sea dike is building in the Saemangeum area. When the construction of the sea dike in the coastal region takes plase, there exists, a certain amount of soil which is diffused by the tidal current. (omitted)

  • In 1996, the Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University, Japan entered an era of open student-exchange with Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany. Thus far, more than 50 of our students have devoted anywhere from three months, to an entire year of their courses, to collaborative efforts with fellow students, (-and some cases, the local citizenry) -in their native environment experiencing unfamiliar education systems and cultures.

  • Obesity is one of the most serious problems in human life which may cause various diseases, i.e., cancer, hypertension and diabetes. The biochemical and clinical researches on this issue have been widely studied worldwide, and the mechanism and improvement of obesity have been gradually clarified. In this workshop, three distinguished speakers from clinical, biochemical and pharmaceutical development fields have been invited. Professor Yasushi Saito is a high prestigious worldwide in terms of the study of obesity.

  • A novel fault diagnosis method based on likelihood decomposition is proposed for linear stochastic systems described by autoregressive (AR) model. Assuming that at some time instant .tau. the fault of one of the following two types is occurs: innovation fault (actuator fault); and observation fault (sensor fault), the log-likelihood function is decomposed into two components based on the observations before and after .tau., respectively, Then, the type of the fault is determined by comparing the log-likelihoods corresponding two types of faults. Numerical examples demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed diagnosis method.
