  • To determine the effect of newly developed insecticide on two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus Urticae, populations, ten leaf discs were sprayed with three different concentrations (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) of the tested insecticide solution, and with a water-sprayed control. The tested insecticide solution was toxic to adult female and immature of two spotted spider mite, but was relatively non-toxic to eggs. For equivalent concentrations, more adult females were killed than immature stages. There was no marked difference between the hatch of treated and untreated eggs, although a weak trend between the numbers of unhatched eggs and the insecticide concentration after 7 days is shown.

Comparative Toxicity of Abmectin to the Spider Mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch and Teranychus Kanzawai Kishida (Acarina; Tetranychidae) and the Predatory Mite, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha (Acarina: Phytoseiidae) (점박이응애(Tetranychus urticae), 간자와응애(Tetranychus Kanzawai)와 긴털이리응애(Amblyseius womersleyi)에 대한 Abamectin의 독성 비교)

  • The comparative toxicity of abamectin to the predatory mite, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha and the spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. kanzawai Kishida was evaluated by leaf disc method. Abamectin was much less toxic to A. womersleyi than to the spider mites. Although survival rate of adult females of A. womersleyi tended to decrease with increasing abamectin concentration, 8-78% of predators remained alive at concentrations of 0.38-6 ppm. Likewise, reproduction was significantly reduced with increasing abamectin concentration. Abamectin neither affect the hatch of A. womersleyi eggs nor the development of surviving immature predators. Survival of immature predators decreased with increasing abamectin concentration. However, 42-90% of immature predators reached adulthood at 0.38-3 ppm. Adult female predators survived on a diet of spider mites intoxicated with abamectin, although their fecundity and the sex-ratio of the progeny were significantly affected. Abamectin at selective sublethal concentrations (0.38-0.75 ppm) could he of value in adjusting predatorlprey ratios in integrated management of T. urticae and T. kanzawai.

  • These studies were conducted to examine the mechanism of acaricidal resistance in the twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch). The resistant strains were obtained by succssive selection of five acaricides including carbonphenothion and ethion of organophosphorus compound, dicofol of organochlorine compound, cyhexatin of compound and biphenthrin of synthetic pyrethroid. Esterase isozymes were separated by polyacrlyamide gel susceptible strains. The differences of the esterase isozymes of the resistant strains were Est. 1, Est. 3 in the carbonphenothion-selected strain, Est. 3 in the ethion- and the cyhexatin-selected strains, Est. 1, Est. 3, Est. 7 in the dicofol-selected strain, Est. 7 in the biphenthrin-selected strain as compared to the susceptible strain. With the difference of electrophoretic bands and their activities, esterases were related to the resistant mechanism of tested acaricides.

  • Miticidal and repellent activity of twenty plant essential oils against the adults of two spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae, were examined. Sandal wood oil was the most potent one in mortality, whereas clary sage oil exhibited the greatest repellent activity. On those twenty essential oils tested, no apparent correlation between toxicity and repellency was observed. When the most active oils were blended, the combinations tend to exhibit antagonistic interactions in both toxicity and repellent activity. The chemical compositions of sandal wood oil and clary sage oil were identified via GC/MS analyses, and the major constituents of sandal wood oils were sesquiterpene compounds, whereas the major ones for clary sage oil were monoterpenes. Among the major components in clary sage oil, linalyl acetate was not only the most abundant constituent, but also the most responsible one for its repellent activity.

  • Stability of resistance of the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) to dicofol was investigated. Resistance level (23.0-fold) of adult females to dicofol was kept up to 1 year without selection by dicofol, but was decreased to 15.8-, 10.7-fold after 2 and 3 years, respectively. Susceptibility of adult females obtained from reciprocal crosses $(R_{female}\timesS_{male},R_{male}\times S_{female})$ of the R and S stains to dicofol was declined by the success of generation.

  • Eight field-collected populations of the two-spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae (Koch) from apple orchards of different geographical areas were tested for resistance to seven acaricides by leaf disk method in comparison with a susceptible strain. Marked regional variations of susceptibility were observed. Only low to moderate resistance to azocyclotin, fenpropathrin, propargite, and abamectin was obtained. However, high resistance to dicofol, fenpyroxymate, and pyridaen by eight field-collected populations was produced. Resistance to dicofol and fenpyroxymate was widespread. All of the strains tested were susceptible to one or more o the acaricides used. These results indicate that careful selection of the chemical used against any population of the two-spotted spider mite might result in satisfactory control.

  • These studies were conducted to investigate development of chemical resistance in two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) trough single selection for a given period of time with five acaricides including carbophenothion and ethion of organo-phosphate compound, dicofol of organo-chlorine compound, cyhexatin of organo-tin compound, biphenthrin of synthetic pyrethroid compound; and to examine cross-resistance among the acaricides to the selected populations. The development of chemical resistance of two-spotted spider mite was greatly varied under single selection of the each five acaricides. The carbophenothion- and the ethion-populations at the 22nd and the 24th selected generations showed 156- and 64.1-fold resistant levels, respectively, as compared with the susceptible population. However, the dicofol population at the 28th selected generation exhibited 39.7-fold resistant level, and the biphenthrin population at the 24th selected generation revealed 25.2-fold resistant level, while the cyhexatin population at the 20th selected generation showed 13-fold resistant level. The carbophenothion-selected population showed high cross-resistance to ethion, and low cross-resistance to dicofol and biphenthrin. The ethion-selected population revealed also high cross-resistance to carbophenothion. The dicofol-or the biphenthrin-selected populations, however, exhibited moderate cross-resistance to carbophenothion and ethion. Meantime, the cyhexatin-selected population showed high cross-resistance to ethion and carbophenothion.

  • Studies were carried out to investigate the overwintering densities of spider mites, hatching rate and time of P. ulmi eggs, and seasonal occurrences of spider mites (P. ulmi and T. urticae) in apple orchards of Kyungpook province from 1987 to 1989. Overwintering density of P. ulmi eggs was higher in Kunwi, Andong, Chilgok but lower in Kyungju. Overovintering densities of T. urticae were high in all the regions. With the hatching time and rate for P. ulmi eggs, the first hatching ate was April 14, and the last was May 3, and the average hatching rate was 89.3%. The density of P. ulmi was high from early May to middle July and T. urticae begin to increase rapidly from middle June and then was continuously high upto fruit harvesting time.
