For most parents their child's illness and hospitalization is strssful. Internal stress and over anxiousness leads to uncertainty. Parents have a variety of ways of coping when faced with such stress factors, especialy when the child has cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between uncertainty in illness and mastery and coping styles in parents of pediatric cancer patients, and further to identify differences between three groups of subjects. A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was used in this study to investigate the relationship among the three groups. The sample was composed of 59 parents of children with cancer in pediatric wards in three hospitals in Seoul : 21 in Group 4 with a child newly diagnosed with cancer : 25 in Group B, with a child under treatment and rehospitalized with a relapse : and 13 in Group C, with a child with a terminal cancer, A formalized questionnaire which included demegrapic information and consisted of 75 items was used in this study ; The Parent Perception of Uncertainty Scale(PPUS) adapted form Mishel’s Uncertainty in Illness Scale, Pearlin & Schooler's Mastery Scale(MS) and Folkman & Lazarus’s Ways of Coping Checklist(WCC) were used to measure the variables : uncertainty in illness, mastery, and coping styles. A pretest was conducted on the questionnaire items for reliability. The results gathered were analyzed using SPSS /PC/sup +/. Data analysis included descriptive correltional statistics such as ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, amd chi square test. The conclusions of this analysis are summarized as follows : 1. A higher level of uncertainty was seen among parents of children with terminal cancer. 2. The first hypothesis that uncertainty in illness would differ among the three groups was supported(F=4.182, P=.020). The second and third hypotheses that mastery and coping styles would differ among the three groups were not supported. There was a correlation between uncertainty, mastery, and coping styles which was positive, also there was a positive correlation between mastery and coping style(r=.3744, P<.001) but a negative correlation between uncertainty md mastery(r=-.4749, P<.01). From the above results, it can be concluded that prediciting and controlling uncertainty in illness by considering coping styles and mastery are necessary for improved, efficient nursing interventions.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effect of supportive nursing care program for patients with total hip arthroplasty. Methods: Forty-two patients with total hip arthroplasty were enrolled in this study from September, 20, 2011 to January, 3, 2012. The participants were assigned to one of two groups: Twenty-six subjects in the experimental group were provided with supportive nursing care program which comprised of 6 nurse visits pre and post operation and 4 follow-up phone calls after discharge. Another 26 subjects received conventional nursing care program as a control group. Hip function, anxiety, and uncertainty were evaluated before the intervention, and 5 weeks after completion of the intervention. The analysis included descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and t-test by SPSS 18.0. Results: Hip function was significantly increased in the experimental group (t=-3.31, p<.002). Anxiety and uncertainty group was significantly lower in the experimental group (t=7.12, p<.001 and t=4.66, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the supportive care intervention for patients receiving total hip arthroplasty could be utilized as a nursing intervention to improve hip function and to reduce anxiety and uncertainty of patients receiving total hip arthroplasty.
An experiment was conducted for the OECD/NEA ROSA-2 Project using the large-scale test facility (LSTF), which simulated a 17% hot leg intermediate-break loss-of-coolant accident in a pressurized water reactor (PWR). In the LSTF test, core uncovery started simultaneously with liquid level drop in crossover leg downflow-side before loop seal clearing, and water remaining occurred on the upper core plate in the upper plenum. Results of the uncertainty analysis with RELAP5/MOD3.3 code clarified the influences of the combination of multiple uncertain parameters on peak cladding temperature within the defined uncertain ranges. For studying the scaling problems to extrapolate thermal-hydraulic phenomena observed in scaled-down facilities, an experiment was performed for the OECD/NEA PKL-3 Project with the Primarkreislaufe Versuchsanlage (PKL), as a counterpart to a previous LSTF test. The LSTF test simulated a PWR 1% hot leg small-break loss-of-coolant accident with steam generator secondary-side depressurization as an accident management measure and nitrogen gas inflow. Some discrepancies appeared between the LSTF and PKL test results for the primary pressure, the core collapsed liquid level, and the cladding surface temperature probably due to effects of differences between the LSTF and the PKL in configuration, geometry, and volumetric size.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a supportive program on uncertainty, anxiety, and maternal-fetal attachment in high-risk pregnant women. Methods: The participants were 59 high-risk pregnant women admitted to the maternal-fetal intensive care unit. The control group (n=30) received usual treatment and antenatal care, while the experimental group (n=29) received an additional supportive program. Uncertainty, anxiety, and maternal-fetal attachment were measured in both groups prior to the intervention and at 3 days and 10 days after the intervention (or at discharge). Data were analyzed with the t-test, chi-square test, repeated-measures analysis of covariance, and the Greenhouse-Geisser correction in SPSS version 23.0. Results: A supportive program including information provision, nutritional care, emotional care, and exercise care was developed from the literature. All variables except women's length of stay were found to be homogeneous the between experimental and control groups in the pre-test. Length of stay was calculated as a covariate for testing hypotheses. There was a significant difference in state anxiety over time between the two groups, while there were no differences in uncertainty or maternal-fetal attachment. Conclusion: This supportive program was identified as an effective nursing intervention on state anxiety in high-risk pregnant women during their stay in the maternal-fetal intensive care unit. It is suggested that nurses could apply this program to alleviate high-risk pregnant women's state anxiety, and that this program could be modified to be more effective on uncertainty and maternal-fetal attachment in high-risk pregnant women.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of uncertainty, physiological risk factors, self-efficacy, and self-management among stroke patients and to identify factors influencing their self-management. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used for this study. A convenience sample of 149 patients with stroke were enrolled at C national university hospital from February to April in 2016. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and electronic medical record. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: There were significant negative correlations between uncertainty and self-efficacy (r=-.56, p<.001); between uncertainty and self-management (r=-.56, p<.001); and between total cholesterol and self-management (r=-.23, p=.005). There were significant positive correlations between self-efficacy and self-management (r=.78, p<.001); between uncertainty and total cholesterol (r=.24, p=.003). The significant factors influencing self-management were uncertainty and self-efficacy. Theses variables explained 62.7% of the variance in self-management. Conclusion: The results suggest that intervention programs to reduce the level of uncertainty and to increase the level of self-efficacy among patients would improve the self-management of stroke patients.

A national standard system was developed in order to calibrate and test the oil flowmeters for the petroleum field. A stop valve and a gyroscopic weighing scale were employed for the primary standard of the flow quantity. It is operated by the standing start and finish mode and the static weighing method. The model equation for uncertainty evaluation was based on the calibration principle of standard system. The sources of the uncertainties were quantified and combined according to the GUM(Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement). It was found that the standard system had the relative expanded uncertainty of 0.04 % in the range of 18 - 350 ㎥/h. According to the uncertainty budget, the uncertainties of the fluid density and the volume of pipeline, which were temperature dependent, contributed 92% of final uncertainty in the oil flow standard system.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among women's total symptom distress, uncertainty and quality of life in women with endometriosis. BACKGROUND: This study was to develop a analytical reference material including twenty pesticides in tomato. To use it for proficiency test, the suitability of homogeneity, storage stability, assigned values and uncertainty for analytical reference material were important.METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to develop a analytical reference material of tomato for multi-residue analysis of pesticides, twenty-pesticides were treated in tomato and the samples were frozen and homogenized. The homogeneity, stability, assigned value and uncertainty were calculated according to the requirements of the KS A ISO Guide 35, KS Q ISO 13528 and EURL-PT protocol. The values of the within-bottle standard variation(swb) and the between-bottle standard variation(sbb) were 0.9~6.5% of assigned value and the uncertainty(u*bb) due to inhomogeneity was also calculated as 0.6~1.9% for all pesticides. This indicated that it was satisfactory to be used as a analytical reference material. The storage stabilities of twenty-pesticides at room temperature and freezing conditions were assessed according to the requirement of the KS Q ISO Guide 35. All pesticides were stable at room temperature (20~30℃) for 8 days and freezing (-20℃) for 23 days.CONCLUSION: The feasibility of analytical reference material for pesticide multi-residue analysis in a tomato matrix was investigated. Homogeneity of within/between-bottle, uncertainty and stabilities at room temperature and freezing condition were satisfactory for a use of proficiency test and quality control. From these results, a analytical reference material would be applicable to monitor the proficiency test of pesticide analysis organizations to improve the reliability and consistency.
This paper determines 1D shear wave velocity (Vs) distribution of rockfill zone of CFRD using Vs profile determined by the surface wave test. There exists uncertainty in the field test result because of a spatial variation of material property. The harmonic wavelet transform is used to evaluate the uncertainty of test result and generate random 1D Vs distributions which may exist in the rock fill zone. Through the statistical analysis of generated random Vs distributions, the representative 1D Vs distribution considering the uncertainty of test results is proposed for the rockfill zone of CFRD in Korea.

Test uncertainty of a towed underwater Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system was assessed in a towing tank. To estimate the systematic error and random error of mean velocity and turbulence properties measurement, velocity field of uniform flow was measured. Total uncertainty of the axial component of mean velocity was 1.45% of the uniform flow speed and total uncertainty of turbulence properties was 3.03%. Besides, variation of particle displacement was applied to identify the change of error distribution. In results for variation of particle displacement, the error rapidly increases with particle movement under one pixel. In addition, a nominal wake of a model ship was measured and compared with existing experimental data by five-hole Pitot tubes, Pitot-static tube, and hot wire anemometer. For mean velocity, small local vortex was identified with high spatial resolution of SPIV, but has serious disagreement in local maxima of turbulence properties due to limited sampling rate.
