Recently, non-destructive tests are getting popular in evaluating concrete properties without braking specimens. Among several NDT methods, P-wave velocity measurement technique has been widely used to evaluate the stiffness and strength of concrete. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors influencing P-wave velocity measured by impact-resonant method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method, such as moisture content of concrete, existence and size of coarse aggregates, sensor and sampling rate. Test results show that rod-wave velocity measured by impact-resonant method and ultrasonic pulse velocity are significantly affected by the moisture content of concrete, i.e., the lower moisture content, the lower velocity. Moisture content influences rod-wave velocity stronger than ultrasonic pulse velocity. Rod-wave velocity is faster in concrete than in mortar and is also faster in concrete containing small size aggregates. Sensor and sampling rate have little influence on velocity.

To obtain a low ground resistance in high resistivity soil or in insufficient place such as downtown, long vertical ground rods are often used. However, if the lightning current or fault current with high frequency flows into the grounding system, the ground impedance is remarkedly increased. This paper presents how the impulse and fault current works on the long. vertical ground rods associated with incoming points. When the test current was injected at the bottom of ground rod, the potential waveform of ground rod includes the oscillation with high frequency.

This paper describes ground surface potential rises and touch voltage. The more soil resistivity of upper layer is lower, the more ground surface potential rise is increased. Ground surface potential rise is increased as the buried depth of ground rod in lowered. Ground surface potential rises were measured in the test site and compared with results by CDEGS program. Touch voltages according to the separation distance of ground rod were measured in four directions. Touch voltages were remarkably changed by separation distance and contact position.
In the conventional axial load transfer analysis for composite piles (i.e., steel pipe pile filled with concrete), it was assumed that the concrete's strain is same as the measured steel's strain and the elastic modulus of the steel and the concrete calculated by formular as prescribed by specification is used in calculation of pile axial load. But, the pile axial load calculated by conventional method had some difference with the actual pile load. So, the behavior of a composite pile could not be analyzed exactly. Thus, the necessity to measure the strain for each pile components was proposed. In this study, the verification test for DRS (Deformable Rod Sensor) developed to measure the strain of each pile component (i.e., the steel and the concrete) was performed. In the calculation of pile axial load using the DRS, elastic modulus of concrete could be determined by the uniaxial compression test for the concrete cylinder samples made in the test site and an average tangential modulus in the stress range of (0.2∼0.6)f$_ck$ was taken.

KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) fabricated MOX (Mixed Oxide) fuel pellets as a cooperation project with PSI (Paul Scherrer Institut) for an irradiation test in the Halden reactor. The MOX pellets were fitted into fuel rods that included instrumentation for measurement in IFE (Institutt for Energiteknikk). The fuel rods were assembled into the test rig and irradiated in the Halden reactor up to 50 MWd/kgHM. The irradiated fuel rods were transported to the IFE, where ceramography was carried out. The fuel rods were cut transversely at the relatively higher burn-up locations and then the radial cross sections were observed. Micrographs were analyzed using an image analysis program and grain sizes along the radial direction were measured by the linear intercept method. Radial cracks in the irradiated MOX were observed that were generally circumferentially closed at the pellet periphery and open in the hot central region. A circumferential crack was formed along the boundary between the dark central and the outer regions. The inner surface of the cladding was covered with an oxide layer. Pu-rich spots were observed in the outer region of the fuel pellets. The spots were surrounded by many small pores and contained some big pores inside. Metallic fission product precipitates were observed mainly in the central region and in the inside of the Pu spots. The average areal fractions of the metallic precipitates at the radial cross section were 0.41% for rod 6 and 0.32% for rod 3. In the periphery, pore density smaller than 2 ${\mu}m$ was higher than that of the other regions. The grain growth occurred from 10 ${\mu}m$ to 12 ${\mu}m$ in the central region of rod 6 during irradiation.

To develop a new nuclear fuel, it needs to make a test fuel rod and carry out burn-up test in the test loop of a research reactor to check the irradiation characteristics of the nuclear fuel. At that time, several sensors such as thermocouples, LVDTs and SPNDs are needed to be attached in and out of the fuel rod and connect them with instrumentation cables. Then, the instrumentation cables deliver the signals measured by the sensors to the measuring device located outside of the reactor pool. In particular, to install a thermocouple in a fuel rod, it needs to drill off holes on the alumina blocks and sintered $UO_2$ pellets. However, because the hardness of a sintered $UO_2$ pellet is 700 Hv (or HRC 61) and that of an alumina block is 1480 Hv, a special drilling machine which adapts a diamond coated drill bit had developed. In this study, several case experiments have been carried out to find an optimal drilling condition of the drilling machine. And, using the optimal drilling condition, minimum numbers of the holes that a drill bit can drill off are verified.

The objective of this study is to predict the roll wear in hot rod rolling process. In this study hot rod rolling process for round and oval passes has been investigated. In order to predict the roll wear, the wear model is reformulated as an incremental form and then wear depth of roll is calculated at each deformation step on contact area using the results of finite element analysis, such as relative sliding velocity and normal pressure at contact area. Archard's wear model was applied to predict the roll wear. To know the thermal softening of DCI (Ductile Cast Iron) roll according to operating conditions, high temperature micro hardness test is executed and a new wear model has been proposed by considering the thermal softening of DCI roll expressed in terms of the main tempering parameter curve. 3D wear program developed in this study might be used for adjusting the gap of rolls to set up a suitable rolling schedule for keeping dimensional tolerance of the product.

There are claims that ESE(Early streamer emission) Air terminals offer a vastly increased zone of protection over that of traditional lightning rods by causing the emission of an upward streamer/leader that will propagate towards the tip of downward leader at an early stage in the attachment process than would occur for a simple rod in the same geometrical configurations. This paper shows the results of comparing test a particular type of ESE air terminals with a simple rod conducted in the KEH HV laboratory, which are lightning impulse voltage test, flashover direction test and corona emission current measurement. The results from this test show a completely random scattering of flashovers to the conventional and ESE air terminals under identical electrics] and geometrical conditions, and thus shows no advantage of one terminal over the other.

Fretting wear behavior under elastic deformable contacts was experimentally examined by using a simulated dual cooled fuel rod and its supporting structure. As this fuel rod has larger outer diameter than the typical solid rod to accommodate sufficient internal flow, new supporting structure geometries should be designed and their reliabilities (i.e. vibration characteristics, fretting wear resistance, etc.) are also examined with both analytical and experimental methods. In this study, the supporting structure characteristics and fretting wear behaviors are analyzed and examined by using one of the supporting structure candidates which has an embossing shape. The supporting structure characteristics were examined by using a specially designed test rig and their results were compared with that of analytical method. Based on the test results, the relationship between the supporting structure characteristics and their fretting wear behaviors was discussed in detail.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the important Parameters of the Pedicle screw by estimating the mechanical characteristics of screws under static and dynamic loads. Methodology for estimating Parameters under static load was proposed. It was also shown that the fatigue life of the one-level system could be increased by changing the shape of screws. Load parameters of the single pedicle screw were friction force. bending moment. and holding force. The test results of the one-level system could be inferred from teat results of the sin91e screw under bending force Fatigue life of the one-level system with flexible rod was longer than that of the upper Part test without rod . Considering the drop of flexibility of the rod due to muscles and ligament, fatigue life of the one-level system could be estimated b? that of the single screw.
