  • The spacer grid is one of the main structural components in the fuel assembly, which supports the fuel rods and maintains coolable geometry from an external load. A vibration test and a finite element analysis using ABAQUS on a dummy fuel rod continuously supported by Optimized H type(OHT) and New Doublet (ND) spacer grids arc performed to obtain the vibration characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes an(1 to verify a finite element model. The results from the test and the finite element analysis are compared by modal assurance criteria (MAC) values. It is resulted that MACs for the first, the third and the fifth mode shapes are relatively good as compared with those of the second an(1 fourth ones. The natural frequency differences between two methods as well as the mode comparison results for the rod with OHT spacer grid are better than those with ND spacer grid. It is judged that the FE model for the ND spacer grid spring should be modified to consider the long contact length which actually happen when the spring supports the rod.

  • The spent fuel slitting device is an equipment developed for the separation of the pellet and hull from the cutting fuel rod with length of 250 mm, and in order to feed UO$_2$ pellet. We have analyzed on the existing technologies for designing and producing of the slitting device in the first year(2001), based on these results, designed and produced the rod slitting device. It has effectively separated the pellet from the hull, but demanded the supplement separation work because of the mixing with pellet and hull in the vessel, and required the condition for the reducing time of the process. In the second year(2002), we have reduced the work time, performed the test and capacity evaluation with the improving device, based these results, and ensured the data demanded for designing of the spent fuel rod slitting device. We have compared with the DUPIC(Direct use of spent PWR fuel in CAND reactors) process, and developed the device for the purpose of reducing over 40 % in comparition with the DUPIC operation time(5 minutes). Based on these results, it will is effectively applied to available data for designing and producing of the hot test facility.

  • It has been known that water-side corrosion of fuel rods in nuclear reactor is accompanied with the loss of metallic wall thickness and pickup of hydrogen. This corrosion is one of the important limiting factors ill the operating life of fuel rods. In connection with the fuel cladding corrosion, a device to measure the water-side oxide layer thickness by means of the eddy-current method without destructing the fuel rod was developed by KAERI. The device was installed on the multi-function testing bench in the nondestructive test hot-cell and its calibration was carried out successfully for the standard rod attached with plastic thin films whose thicknesses are predetermined. It shows good precision within about 10% error. And a PWR fuel rod, one of the J-44 assembly discharged from Kori nuclear power plant Unit-2, has been selected for oxide layer thickness measurements. With the result of data analysis, it appeared that the oxide layer thicknesses of Zircaloy cladding vary with the length of the fuel rod, and their thicknesses were compared with those of the destructive test results to confirm the real thicknesses.

  • A feasibility of a trial test method was evaluated analytically, in which the elastic modulus of a soil deposit was tried to estimate by analyzing dynamic signals measured during conducting the SPT. If there existed a reliable relationship between the impedance ratio of a rod to a soil and the amplitude ratio of a reflected to an incident wave signal at the tip of steel rod contacting the soil surface, it was expected that one could determine the impedance of soil, and then roughly estimate the elastic modulus from the impedance. For a simple rod-soil system, the existence of the relevant relationship was verified in this study by analyzing computed wave signals propagating up and down through the rod. On the basis of these results, thus, a potential of the test method to practical applications could be seen. However, apparent theoretical shortcomings possessed in this approach were also realized since the soil part had an unconfined contact area where contacted with the rod. Therefore, it was concluded that further studies needed to be conducted, in which the reliable theoretical relationship between the impedance and the amplitude ratio as well as the effective contacting soil area contributing to wave reflection should be justified.

  • The main objective of the present study is to perform an experimental evaluation of five existing correlations for the subchannel pressure drop analysis of a wire-wrapped fuel assembly. For this purpose, a series of water experiments have been performed using a helical wire-wrapped 19-pin fuel assembly for various test parameters. Four different test sections with different pitch to rod diameter ratios (P/D) and wire lead length to rod diameter ratios (H/D) have been fabricated. A series of pressure drop measurements were made to obtain friction factors for these four test sections. The new data along with existing data are used to evaluate existing correlations. Both the original and the simplified Cheng and Todreas correlations give the best agreement with experimental data for all flow regions.

  • Rod-type fiber reinforced polymer plastics(FRPs) similar to reinforcing steel bars have rarely been considered. In this study, an experiment was performed using beams strengthened with rod-type CFRPs and high-strength mortar overlay. The test results show that the strengthened beams not only had improved endurance limits but also improved load carrying capacities, stiffness values, and cracking loads as compared to a non-strengthened beam. Strengthened beams anchored with bolts throughout their entire span had more efficient structural behaviors, including composite behavior on the interface between the concrete and mortar, and load carrying capacity, than a strengthened beam anchored only on the end block.

  • In the design and construction of the coastal/offshore structures, it is very important to evaluate the geotechnical characteristics of marine soils, which support the structures. Although the offshore site investigation is much more difficult than onshore, safe and precise jobs have not been accomplished in Korea because of the insufficiency of the test equipments especially for the site with deep water depth. The main objective of this study is to develop a new type of marine cone penetration testing(CPT) system, which can be utilized to even deep sea and high depth of soil layer. The system is one of seabed types and employs the conventional cone, which shows more reliable results than miniature cone. The most important parts of the marine CPT including continuous rod system, cone penetration system with wheel drive, automatic cone rod assembly/dissembly system etc., were designed and manufactured. Some tests to verify the developed marine CPT system were performed at both onshore and offshore sites as well as mechanical test in laboratory. The test results show the consistent and promising performance of the new equipment, and thereafter the system would be applicable to various sites with practical/economical advantages.

  • Tensile load tests were conducted on High-Shear Ring Anchors (HRAs) after shear load had been applied to the HRAs, which had been developed to reduce the number of the anchors. Test variables include the embedment length of the rod and the width of the specimens and a total of 12 specimens were tested. Test results show that the HRAs pulled out due to bond failure or steel failure occurred in case that the HRAs were installed to the members with 300mm or greater width and the embedment length of 160mm (the actual embedment of rod is 140mm) or deeper. Except 4 HRAs showing steel failure of rod, the minimum and average of test-to-prediction by ACI 318-14 ratios are 1.18 and 1.79, respectively. The tensile strength of HRAs, after shear load was applied to the HRAs, can be safely evaluated by the minimum among the concrete breakout strength and bond strength with the actual embedment length of the rod.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced concrete beam using hybrid retrofitting with two materials (groove and embedding FRP rod, CFRP sheet) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Seven reinforced concrete beams, retrofitted groove and embedding FRP rod (NER series) and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series), and standard specimen (NBS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Design parameters of test specimens are the amount of groove and embedding FRP rod and lapping CFRP sheet. Test results showed that the maximum load carrying capacity of specimens with groove and embedding FRP rod and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series) were increased the by 12~46% and 22~77% respectively in comparison with the standard specimen NBS. Test specimens NER series were failed with the adhesion slip and concrete cover separation. And test specimens NERL series were failed with the adhesion slip due to the confining effect of lapping CFRP sheet.
