Experiments were carried out to quantify the topographic effects on attenuation of sunshine in complex terrain and the results are expected to help convert the coarse resolution sunshine duration information provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) into a detailed map reflecting the terrain characteristics of mountainous watershed. Hourly shaded relief images for one year, each pixel consisting of 0 to 255 brightness value, were constructed by applying techniques of shadow modeling and skyline analysis to the 3m resolution digital elevation model for an experimental watershed on the southern slope of Mt. Jiri in Korea. By using a bimetal sunshine recorder, sunshine duration was measured at three points with different terrain conditions in the watershed from May 15, 2015 to May 14, 2016. The brightness values of the 3 corresponding pixel points on the shaded relief map were extracted and regressed to the measured sunshine duration, resulting in a brightness-sunshine duration response curve for a clear day. We devised a method to calibrate this curve equation according to sky condition categorized by cloud amount and used it to derive an empirical model for estimating sunshine duration over a complex terrain. When the performance of this model was compared with a conventional scheme for estimating sunshine duration over a horizontal plane, the estimation bias was improved remarkably and the root mean square error for daily sunshine hour was 1.7hr, which is a reduction by 37% from the conventional method. In order to apply this model to a given area, the clear-sky sunshine duration of each pixel should be produced on hourly intervals first, by driving the curve equation with the hourly shaded relief image of the area. Next, the cloud effect is corrected by 3-hourly 'sky condition' of the KMA digital forecast products. Finally, daily sunshine hour can be obtained by accumulating the hourly sunshine duration. A detailed sunshine duration distribution of 3m horizontal resolution was obtained by applying this procedure to the experimental watershed.

The 3-D analysis of terrain for route design and selection is being used as important basic data for effective judgement of political draft. This study is to decide efficient alignment of the entry route and design bridge by modeling, analyzing and displaying surface with digital terrain data. In this study we analyze slope, aspect, shaded-relief, line of sight and watershed on the base of DTM such as contour, TIN and grid. And we can not only esti mate end-area volume for road construction by calculating cut and fill and displaying mass-curve but also recognize the scene after execution with simulation of road and terrain. The result of this study reveals that visual effects of the 3-D terrain data are very effective for designer and decisionmaker to select and review alternative route with regard to terrain characteristics.

The purposes of this study were to develope some techniques which can be used in the landscape simulation process using PC based computer grahics. As a result, a couple of utilities were programmed in AutoLISP language. The one(DSLINE.LSP) is to digitize 2-dimensional structuer forms in the interactive mode considering error handling, and the other one (IMPOST.LSP) is for superimposing and visualizing the digitized plan data to 3-dimension solids & surfaces referring to topographic elevations of meshes in digital terrain model. By applying utilities to present site, the followings may be described. 1) The utility DSLINE.LSP for digitizing simplified building structure form were proved to be easy to input data of polygons including orthogonal edges by handling user coordinates system and checking invalid intersection and default colsing. 2) IMPOST.LSP utility for superimposing and visualizing tool were proved to be more complicated and speedy in calculating process compared with a practical application of modeling tool before rendering process in landscape simulation of built environment on topographic relief, on specially mesospace level of assessment.

In mountainous area with high relief, topography may cause cast shadows due to the blocking of direct solar radiation. Remote sensing images of these landscapes display reduced values of reflectance for shadowed areas compared to non-shadowed areas with similar surface cover characteristics. A variety of approaches are possible, though a common step in various active approaches is first to delineate the shadows using automated algorithm and digital surface model (or digital elevation model). This articles demonstrates a common confusion caused by cast shadows

Most terrain information have been generally acquired by map. Because the map presents the real terrain, not by real figure but by contours, geometric figures, symbols, texts, and colors, it is not easy to interpret the real terrain by map. For this reason, aerial photos or terrestrial photos also have been used sometimes in the terrain analysis. But photos have geometrical displacement caused by the position of camera at the exposition time and the relief of the object. So, for accurate posional analysis, orthophoto maps produced by optical rectifier have been used. But, it is hard to produce orthophoto map by optical rectifier and the process is so slow. This study aims to present an accurate and rapid method to produce orthophoto map by generating digital elevation model from stereo aerial photos on common computer using the digital photogrammetric technique and producing orthophoto map digitally using the digital elevation model.

In recent years, the number of users has been increasing with the rapid development of earth observation satellites. In response, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) has been striving to provide user-friendly satellite images by introducing the concept of Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and defining its requirements as CEOS ARD for Land (CARD4L). In ARD, a mask called an Unusable Data Mask (UDM), identifying unnecessary pixels for land analysis, should be provided with a satellite image. UDMs include clouds, cloud shadows, terrain shadows, etc. Terrain shadows are generated in mountainous terrain with large terrain relief, and these areas cause errors in analysis due to their low radiation intensity. previous research on terrain shadow detection focused on detecting terrain shadow pixels to correct terrain shadows. However, this should be replaced by the terrain correction method. Therefore, there is a need to expand the purpose of terrain shadow detection. In this study, to utilize CAS500-4 for forest and agriculture analysis, we extended the scope of the terrain shadow detection to shaded areas. This paper aims to analyze the potential for terrain shadow detection to make a terrain shadow mask for South and North Korea. To detect terrain shadows, we used a Hill-shade algorithm that utilizes the position of the sun and a surface's derivatives, such as slope and aspect. Using RapidEye images with a spatial resolution of 5 meters and Sentinel-2 images with a spatial resolution of 10 meters over the Korean Peninsula, the optimal threshold for shadow determination was confirmed by comparing them with the ground truth. The optimal threshold was used to perform terrain shadow detection, and the results were analyzed. As a qualitative result, it was confirmed that the shape was similar to the ground truth as a whole. In addition, it was confirmed that most of the F1 scores were between 0.8 and 0.94 for all images tested. Based on the results of this study, it was confirmed that automatic terrain shadow detection was well performed throughout the Korean Peninsula.

Digital Terrain Model is composed of two basic elements, namely, sampling and interpolation. They represent the procurement of data and the geometric reconstruction of terrain relief respectively. For evaluation DTM data, following two paremeters appear to be the most important factor, that is, the accuracy and efficiency and, in particular, the break point information significantly affect to the accuracy of DTM data. The main objective of this study is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of DTM by applying Progressive Sampling with distinct morphologic information. In this study, the total of 240 individual numerical tests has been implemented and the appropriate computer program is also developed for the test. The result of investigation shows that the Progressive Sampling with break point information improves the accuracy of DTM by 30 percent approximately.

The digital terrain model (DTM) or digital elevation model (DEM) is commonly used in representing the continuous variation of relief over space. One of the most frequent applications is to display the three dimensional view of the landform concerned. In this paper, the altitude matrices-regular grid cell format of the elevation in Mt. Kyeryong National Park were used in developing the three dimensional view software for the first time in Korea. It required the removal of hidden lines or surfaces. To do this, it was necessary to identify those surfaces and line segments that are visible and those that are invisible. Then, only the visible portions of the landform were displayed. The assumption that line segments are used to approximate contour surfaces by polygons was used in developing the three dimensional orthographic view. In order to remove hidden lines, the visibility test and masking algorithms were used. The software was developed in the engineering workstation, SUN 3/280 at the Institute of Space Science and Astronomy using 'C' in UNIX operating system. The software developed in this paper can be used in various fields. Some of them are as follows : (1) Landscape design and planning for identifying viewshed area(line of sight maps) (2) For planning the route selection and the facility location (3) Flight simulation for pilot training (4) Other landscape planning or civil engineering purposes

This research was classified mountain areas with high ecological, environmental and resource value among the macro scaled terrain that can be checked at the space scale of less than 1:1,000,000 and analyzed the topographical characteristics. It has been confirmed that the mountains of the Korean peninsula belong to the groups IV, V, VI(classification by Kapos et al.(2000)) as a result of applying the quantitative standards for designation of mountain areas to the global mountain system. The area of mountains calculated using high resolution DEM is equivalent to 48% of the area of the Korean peninsula, and the result is quite different from the general idea of which 70% is the mountain area of the Korean peninsula. The mountain areas show the distribution of geomorphons, that is different from the plains and the hills and also, it shows the differences between the mountains of the groups IV~ VI classified according to the altitude. As a result of analyzing the relations among type pattern, slope, and relief, specific geomorphons are concentrated at $10^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$ and it shows the possibility to classify the mountainous areas into two groups based on the result that the distribution of landform patterns are bimodal in the relation to the amount of relief.
The objective of this research was to introduce the TPI approach for interpreting land-forms of mountain forests in South Korea. We develop an objective procedure to decide the scale factor as a basic analytical unit in land-form classification of rugged mountain areas using TPI. In order to determine the scale factor associated with the pattern of slope profiles, the gradient variance curve was derived from a revised hypsometric curve developed using the relief energy of topographic profiles. Using the gradient variance curve, found was the grid size with which the change in relief energy got the peak point. The grid size at the peak point was determined as the scale factor for the study area. In order to investigate the performance of the procedure based on the gradient variance curve, it was applied to determination of the site-specific scale factors of 3 different terrain conditions; highly-rugged, moderately-rugged and relatively less-rugged. The TPI associated with the corresponding scale factors by study site was, then, determined and used in classifying the land-forms. According to the results of this study, the scale factor gets shorter with more rugged terrain conditions. It was also found that the numbers of valleys and ridges estimated with TPI show almost the same trends as those of the observed and the scale factors tends to approach to the mean distance of ridges.
