Water vapor leading various scale of atmospheric circulation and accounting for about 60% of the naturally occurring warming effect is important climate variables. Using the Total Precipitable Water (TPW) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) operating on both Terra and Aqua, we study long-term Variation of TPW and define relationship among TPW and climatic parameters such as temperature and precipitation to quantitatively demonstrate the impact on climate change over East Asia focusing on the Korea peninsula. In this study, we used linear regression analysis to detect the correlation of TPW and temperature/precipitation and harmonic analysis to analyze changeable aspects of periodic characteristics. A result of analysis using linear regression analysis between TPW and climate elements, TPW shows a high determination coefficient ($R^2$) with temperature and precipitation (determination coefficient between TPW and temperature: 0.94, determination coefficient between TPW anomaly and temperature anomaly: 0.8, determination coefficient between TPW and precipitation: 0.73, determination coefficient between TPW anomaly and precipitation anomaly: 0.69). A result of harmonic analysis of TPW and precipitation of two-year to five-year cycle, amplitude contribution ratio of 3.5-year cycle are much higher and two phases are similar in 3.5-year cycle.
An algorithm was developed to retrieve both cloud optical thickness and effective particle radius considered the aerosol effect on clouds. This study apply the algorithm of Nakajima and Nakajima (1995) that is used to retrieve cloud optical thickness and effective particle radius from visible, near infrared satellite spectral measurements. To retrieve cloud properties, Look-up table (LUT) was made under different atmospheric conditions by using a radiative transfer model. Especially the vertical distribution of aerosol is based on a tropospheric aerosol profile in radiative transfer model. In the case study, we selected the extensive forest fire occurred in Russia in May 2003. The aerosol released from this fire may be transported to Korea. Cloud properties obtained from these distinct atmospheric situations are analysed in terms of their possible changes due to the interactions of the clouds with the aerosol particle plumes. Cloud properties over the East sea at this time was retrieved using new algorithm. The algorithm is applied to measurements from the MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra spacecrafts. As a result, cloud effective particle radius was decreased and cloud optical thickness was increased during aerosol event. Specially, cloud effective particle radius is hardly greater than $20{\mu}m$ when aerosol particles were present over the East Sea. Clouds developing in the aerosol event tend to have more numerous but smaller droplets.

사용된 퍼지변수로는 시험유역의 토양수분 관측자료와 강수량 및 인공위성 자료인 MODIS NDVI(Normalize Difference Vegetation Index), MODIS LST(Land-Surface Temperature) 영상을 이용하였다.
Cloud detection means determining the presence or absence of clouds in a pixel in a satellite image, and acts as an important factor affecting the utility and accuracy of the satellite image. In this study, among the satellites of various advanced organizations that provide cloud detection data, we intend to perform quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis on the difference between the cloud detection data of GK-2A/AMI, Terra/MODIS, and Suomi-NPP/VIIRS. As a result of quantitative comparison, the Proportion Correct (PC) index values in January were 74.16% for GK-2A & MODIS, 75.39% for GK-2A & VIIRS, and 87.35% for GK-2A & MODIS in April, and GK-2A & VIIRS showed that 87.71% of clouds were detected in April compared to January without much difference by satellite. As for the qualitative comparison results, when compared with RGB images, it was confirmed that the results corresponding to April rather than January detected clouds better than the previous quantitative results. However, if thin clouds or snow cover exist, each satellite were some differences in the cloud detection results.
Enhancement of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and surface aerosol mass concentration in Korea for an active forest fire episode in Northeast Asia were estimated by Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. MODIS/TERRA remote detects of fires in Northeast Asia for May 2003 gave a constraint for estimation of wildfire emissions with an NDVI distribution for recent five years. The simulated wildfire plumes and enhancement of AOT were evaluated and well resolved by comparing multiple satellite observations such as MODIS, TOMS, and others. Scatter plots of observed daily mean aerosol extinction coefficient versus $PM_{10}$ concentration in ground level in Korea showed distinctively different trends based on the ambient relative humidity.

The Terra/MODIS data set over Yellow River Basin, China is generated for the purpose of an input parameter into the water resource management model, which has been developed in the Research Revolution 2002 (RR2002) project. This dataset is mainly utilized for the land cover classification and radiation budget analysis. In this paper, the outline of the dataset generation, and a simple land cover classification method, which will be developed to avoid the influence of cloud contamination and missing data, are introduced.

This study is to estimate the possible damage area of greenhouse by heavy snowfall event using terra MODIS snow cover area (SCA) and the ground measured snowfall data (GMSD). For the 4 heavy snowfall events of January 2001, March 2004, December 2005 and January 2010, the areas exceeding the design criteria of snowfall depth for greenhouse breaking were extracted by coupling the MODIS SCA and GMSD. The main damaged regions were estimated as Gangwon province in 2001, Chungbuk and part of Gyeongbuk province in 2004, Jeonbuk and Jeonnam province in 2005, and Gangwon and part of Gyeonggi province in 2010 respectively. Comparing with the investigated number of greenhouse damaged data, the estimated areas reflected the statistical data except 2001. The 2001 greenhouse damages were caused by the high wind speed (35.7m/sec) together with snowfall. The results of this study can be improved if the design criteria of wind speed is added.
Investigation of the $CO_2$ exchange between biosphere and atmosphere at regional, continental, and global scales can be directed to combining remote sensing with carbon cycle process to estimate vegetation productivity. NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) currently produces a regular global estimate of gross primary productivity (GPP) and annual net primary productivity (NPP) of the entire terrestrial earth surface at 1 km spatial resolution. While the MODIS GPP algorithm uses meteorological data provided by the NASA Data Assimilation Office (DAO), the sub-pixel heterogeneity or complex terrain are generally reflected due to coarse spatial resolutions of the DAO data (a resolution of $1{\circ}\;{\times}\;1.25{\circ}$). In this study, we estimated inputs retrieved from MODIS products of the AQUA and TERRA satellites with 5 km spatial resolution for the purpose of finer GPP and/or NPP determinations. The derivatives included temperature, VPD, and solar radiation. Seven AmeriFlux data located in the Corn Belt region were obtained to use for evaluation of the input data from MODIS. MODIS-derived air temperature values showed a good agreement with ground-based observations. The mean error (ME) and coefficient of correlation (R) ranged from $-0.9^{\circ}C$ to $+5.2^{\circ}C$ and from 0.83 to 0.98, respectively. VPD somewhat coarsely agreed with tower observations (ME = -183.8 Pa ~ +382.1 Pa; R = 0.51 ~ 0.92). While MODIS-derived shortwave radiation showed a good correlation with observations, it was slightly overestimated (ME = -0.4 MJ $day^{-1}$ ~ +7.9 MJ $day^{-1}$; R = 0.67 ~ 0.97). Our results indicate that the use of inputs derived MODIS atmosphere and land products can provide a useful tool for estimating crop GPP.
