The objective of this study is to examine mechanical properties of ductile fiber-reinforced mortar designed based on micromechanics. This mortar was produced by employing raw materials commercially available in Korea. To verify property level of this material in uniaxial tension, a series of direct tensile tests were performed with varying water cement ratio. In addition to this, flexural tests as well as compressive tests were carried out. Experiments revealed that the fiber reinforced mortar exhibited high ductility represented by strain hardening behavior in uniaxial tension. Significant enhancements of ductility, in terms of strain at peak stress and post-peak behavior, were also observed during the tests in compression and in bending.
In order to compare mechanical properties of ausformed martensite with those of marformed martemsite in Fe-30%Ni-0.1%C alloy and to investigate their strengthening mechanisms, ausformed martensite and marformed martensite were prepared by ausforming treatment and marforming treatment respectively. The microstructures were observed and the quantities of retained austenite, hardness, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation were examined. The strength of ausformed martensite was mainly increased because of the lattice defects inherited from austenite. The ductility of ausformed martensite was constant at the rate of 7-8% by ductile matrix formation of the retained austenite in spite of the increase in strength. The strength of marformed martensite was increased by the increment in dislocation density, the crossing of transformation twin with deformation twin and the mutual crossing of deformation twin. The ductility of mar formed martensite was slightly lower than that of ausformed martensite, but the strength of mar formed martensite was prominently higher.

In recent years, TRIP steels which are composed of ferrite, bainite, and retained austenite have drawn much attention for automotive sheets due to excellent combination of strength and ductility. The effect of two-step isothermal heat treatment of bainitic transformation on microstructures, especially retained austenites and tensile properties in the conventional TRIP steel was investigated. A two-step isothermal heat treatment, in which 50% bainitic transformation occurred at high temperature, followed by bainitic transformation at low temperature, improves tensile properties, resulting from enhanced mechanical stability of retained austenite against external plastic deformation due to refinement of retained austenites, compared to single-step isothermal heat treatment.

A study of noticeable improvement in welding speed in thin-plate Type 304 stainless steels gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding was investigated. The welding speeds were increased to more than 3m/min, up to 8m/min. During the welding, Direct Current Straight Polarity (DCSP) and pulsed current GTA welding processes were carried out, respectively. The appropriate high speed welding parameters were established while achieving a high quality weld. After this, Erichsen test and tensile test were performed. The results obtained wert summarized as following: ultra high speed welding for thin-plate Type 304 could be satisfactorily welded with high speed from 3m/min to 8m/min in both DCSP and pulsed GTA welding; Increasing welding speed was found to decrease the ductility, tensile strength md elongation of welded joint; The optimal frequency would be 200Hz-500Hz for high speed welding in pulsed current welding; DCSP welding could obtain the better results of Erichsen test and tensile test than those of pulsed current welding obtained.

A finite element model for predicting the entire nonlinear behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete continuous beams is described. The model is based on the moment-curvature relations pre-generated through section analysis, and is formulated utilizing the Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the model is verified with experimental results of a series of continuous high-strength concrete beam specimens. Some important aspects of behavior of the beams having different tensile reinforcement ratios are evaluated. In addition, a parametric study is carried out on continuous high-strength concrete beams with practical dimensions to examine the effect of tensile reinforcement on the degree of moment redistribution. The analysis shows that the tensile reinforcement in continuous high-strength concrete beams affects significantly the member behavior, namely, the flexural cracking stiffness, flexural ductility, neutral axis depth and redistribution of moments. It is also found that the relation between the tensile reinforcement ratios at critical negative and positive moment regions has great influence on the moment redistribution, while the importance of this factor is neglected in various codes.
Steel plate or FRP materials have been typically used for the seismic retrofit of civil infrastructures. In order to overcome the limitation of each retrofitting material, a composite material, which takes advantages from both metal and fiber polymer materials, has been developed. In the study herein, the composite retrofitting material consists of metal part(steel or aluminum) and FRP sheet part(glass or carbon fiber). The metal part can enhance the ductility and the FRP part the ultimate strength. As a preliminary study to investigate the fundamental mechanical characteristics of the metal-FRP laminated composite material this study performed the tensile test with various experimental variables including the number, the angle and the combination of FRP laminates. From the test results, both aluminum and steel-FRP laminate composite material showed increased fracture toughness. However, the angle and the kind of fibers should be carefully considered in conjunction with the expected loading conditions. In general, steel-FRP laminate composite showed better tensile performance in regards to the seismic retrofit purposes.

The low-cycle fatigue behaviour of a SiC-particulate-reinforced Al-Si cast alloy with two different volume fractions has been investigated from a series of strain-control led fatigue tests with zero and nonzero tensile mean strains. The composites including the unreinforced matrix alloy, exhibited cyclic hardening behaviour, with more pronounced strain-hardening for the composites with a higher volume fraction of the SiC particles. For the tensile mean strain tests, the initial high tensile mean stress relaxed to zero for the ductile Al-Si alloy, resulting in no influence of the tensile mean strain on the fatigue life of the matrix alloy. However, tensile mean strain for the composite caused tensile mean stresses and reduced fatigue life. The pronounced effects of mean strain on the low-cycle fatigue life of the composite compared to the unreinforced matrix alloy were attributed to the initial large prestrain and non-relaxing high tensile mean stress in the composite with very limited ductility and Cyclic plasticity. Fatigue damage parameter using strain energy, density efficiently accounted for the mean stress effects. Predicted fatigue life using the damage parameter correlated fairly well with the experimental life within a factor of 3. Also, the fatigue damage parameter indicated the inferior life in the low-cycle regime and superior life in the high-cycle regime for the composite, compared to the unreinforced matrix alloy.

Recently, with frequent earthquakes around the world, research on seismic design and seismic reinforcement of reinforced concrete facilities has been actively conducted from earthquakes. In particular, columns, which are compressed members of reinforced concrete structures, are vulnerable to lateral forces caused by earthquakes, so an appropriate seismic reinforcement method is required. Therefore, this study intended to develop Velcro seismic reinforcement method that is quick and easy to construct. For the development of Velcro seismic reinforcement, the adhesion and tensile strength of the existing industrial velcro was improved. A direct tensile test was also conducted to compare the tensile performance of the newly-developed velcro seismic reinforcement to industrial one. In addition, numerical analysis was performed to predict the seismic performance of RC columns reinforced by industrial and newly-developed velcro. Based on the analysis results, the strength and ductility of the non-seismic and velcro-reinforced RC column were reviewed. The analysis confirmed that both the strength and ductility of non-seismic RC columns reinforced by industrial and newly-developed velcro increased, but the seismic performance of the newly-developed Velcro reinforcement is better than that of industrial velcro.

Ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete is characterized with high tensile strength and ductility. This paper revealed the influence of fiber volume fraction on the tensile softening behaviour of ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete and developed tensile softening model to predict the deformation capacity by finite element method analysis with experimental results. The initial stiffness of ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete was constant irrespective of fiber volume fraction. The increase of fiber volume fraction improved the flexural tensile strength and caused more brittle softening behaviour. Finite element method analysis proposed by Uchida et al. was introduced to obtain the tensile softening curve from three point notched beam test results and we proposed the tensile softening model as a function of fiber volume fraction and critical crack width.

Folding endurance, bending fatigue and monotonic tensile tests of 4 kinds of Cu foil on flexible substrate was performed to investigate the relationship between folding or bending endurances and tensile characteristics. The repeated 5.3 or 2.0% strain was applied to Cu foil in folding endurance test or bending fatigue test while monitoring the electrical resistance. Elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, and toughness were obtained by monotonic tensile test on the same samples. The Cu foil with higher toughness and ductility showed higher reliabilities in folding or bending fatigue. However, elastic modulus and yield strength did not show any relationship with folding and bending reliability. This is because the failures of Cu foil by folding or bending fatigue were closely related to the fracture energy of metal.
