  • In this paper, time series of soil moisture were measured for a steep forest hillslope to model and understand distinct hydrological behaviours along two different transects. The transfer function analysis was presented to characterize temporal response patterns of soil moisture for rainfall events. The rainfall is a main driver of soil moisture variation, and its stochastic characteristic was properly treated prior to the transfer function delineation between rainfall and soil moisture measurements. Using field measurements for two transects during the rainy season in 2007 obtained from the Bumrunsa hillslope located in the Sulmachun watershed, a systematic transfer functional modeling was performed to configure the relationships between rainfall and soil moisture responses. The analysis indicated the spatial variation pattern of hillslope hydrological processes, which can be explained by the relative contribution of vertical, lateral and return flows and the impact of transect topography.

  • Recently, high ozone episode occurred frequently in Korea. Moreover ozone episode occurred not only in the city but also in background area where local anthropogenic sources are not important. It analyzed frequency exceeding 100ppb ozone at air quality monitoring stations in Seoul and rural area during 1995-2004. This paper reports on the use of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modelling system to predict hourly ozone levels. Domain resolutions of 30km, 10km, 3.333km (innermost) have been employed for this study. Summer periods in June 2004 have been simulated and the predicted results have been compared to data for metropolitan and rural air quality monitoring stations. The model performance has been evaluated with measured data through a range of statistical measures. Although, the CMAQ model reproduces the ozone temporal spatial trends it was not able to simulate the peak magnitudes consistently.

  • In this study, two years Automatic Weather Station (AWS) data observed near the coast and islands are used to evaluate gust factors only when time averaged wind speed is higher than 5 ms. The gust factors are quite different in spatial and temporal domain according to analysis method. As the averaged time is increased, the gust factors are also increased. But the gust factors are decreased when wind speed is increased. It is because each wind speed is averaged one and a maximum wind is the greatest one for each time interval. The result from t-test is shown that all data are included within the 99% significance level. A sample standard deviation of ten minutes and one minute are 0.137~0.197, 0.067~0.142, respectively. Recently, the gust factor provided at the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Homepage is calculated with one-hour averaged method. All though this method is hard to use directly for forecasting the strong wind over sea and coast, the result will be a great help to express Ocean Storm Flash in the Regional Meteorological Offices and the Meteorological Stations.

  • Target/Nontarget classification can be divided into the study of shape estimation of the target analysing reflected echo signal and of type classification of the target using acoustical features. In active sonar system, the feature vectors are extracted from the signal reflected from the target, and an classification algorithm is applied to determine whether the received signal is a target or not. However, received sonar signals can be distorted in the underwater environments, and the spatio-temporal characteristics of active sonar signals change according to the aspect of the target. In addition, it is very difficult to collect real sea-trial data for research. In this paper, target/non-target classification were performed using real sea-trial data. Feature vectors are extracted using MFCC(Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients), filterbank energy in the Fourier spectrum and wavelet domain. For the performance verification, classification experiments were performed using backpropagation neural network classifiers.

  • A methodology which supports the feature used from design to manufacturing for sculptured pocket is newly devlored and present. The information contents in a feature can be easily conveyed from one application to another in the manufacturing domain. However, the feature generated in one application may not be directly suitable for another whitout being modified with more information. Theobjective of the paper is to parsent the methodology of decomposing a bulky feature of sculptured pocket to be removed into compact features to be efficiently machined. In particular, the paper focuses on the two task: 1) to segment horizontally a bulky feature into intermediate features by determining the adequate depth of cut and cutter size and to generate the temporal precedence graph of the intermediate features and 2)to further decompose each intermediate feature vertical into smaller manufacturing features and to apply the variable feed rate to each small feature. The proposed method will provid better efficiency in machining time and cost than the classical method which uses a long string of NC codes necessary to remove a bulky fecture.

  • In this paper, we propose as new algorithm for the selection of key frames in a given video. For the selected key frames to be well defined, the selected key frames need to spread out on the whole temporal domain of the given video and guaranteed not to be duplicate. For this purpose, we take the first frame of each shot of the video as the candidate key frame to represent the video. To reduce the overall processing time, we eliminate some candidate key frames which are visually indistinct in the histogram difference. The key frames are then selected using a clustering processing based on the singly linked hierarchical tree. To make the selected key frames be distributed evenly on the whole video, the deviation and time difference between the selected key frames are used. The simulation results demonstrate that our method provides the better performance compared with previous methods.

  • Recently, coherent control of exciton populations has been demonstrated through terahertz, reflection, and four-wave-mixing experiments. However, the most direct probe of exciton population control is the absorption, which has been lacking in previous studies. In this report, we probe the time evolution of exciton population directly through a transmission experiment. In particular, using upconversion technique with both narrow (spectrally broad) and long (spectrally narrow) pulses, we can obtain both the temporal and the spectral information. The main thrust of our report is that when phase controlled, the second pulse can be either greatly enhanced or completely destroyed by gaining energy from exciton (thus destroying the exciton population) or giving all of its energy to the system (thus greatly increasing the exciton population), respectively. • Time reversal (TR) of body waves in fluids and isotropic solids has been used in many applications including ultrasonic NDE. However, the study of the TR method for anisotropic materials is not well established. In this paper, the full reconstruction of the input signal is investigated for anisotropic media using an analytical formulation, called a modular Gaussian beam (MGB) model. The time reversal operation of this model in the frequency domain is done by taking the complex conjugate of the Gaussian amplitude and phase received at the TR mirror position. A narrowband reference signal having a particular frequency and number of cycles is then multiplied and the whole signal is inverse Fourier transformed. The original input signal is seen to be fully restored by the TR process of MGB model and this model can be more generalized to simulate the spatial and temporal focusing effects due to TR process in anisotropic materials.

  • In transmitting compressed video bit-stream over Internet, packet loss causes error propagation in both spatial and temporal domain, which in turn leads to severe degradation in image qualify In this paper, a new approach for the recovery of lost or erroneous Motion Vector(MV)s by clustering the movements of neighboring blocks by their homogeneity is proposed. MVs of neighboring blocks are clustered according to ALA(Average Linkage Algorithm) clustering and a representative value for each cluster is determined to obtain the candidate MV set. By computing the distortion of the candidates, a MV with the minimum distortion is selected. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits better performance in many cases than existing methods.

  • This paper presents a novel scene change detection method using intra prediction mode and edge direction in H.264/AVC. When scene change occurs, there are less temporal correlation between frames, most of macro-blocks encoded in intra mode. Using this property, the method calculates the percentage of intra mode blocks in each predictive frame in order to get candidates of scene change frame. To further find scene change, we obtain edge histogram of each candidates by using eight prediction direction of intra prediction mode in H.264/AVC. We detect scene change frames with $\iota^1$-norm of edge histograms. The experimental results show that the method is efficient and robust.
