  • In this paper, We propose a new semiautomatic segmentation method using spatio-temporal similarity. In the proposed scheme, segmentation is performed using gradual region merging and hi-direction at spatio-temporal refinement. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed method in semantic object extraction.

Similar Trajectory Retrieval on Road Networks using Spatio-Temporal Similarity (시공간 유사성을 이용한 도로 네트워크 상의 유사한 궤적 검색)

  • In order to analyze the behavior of moving objects, a measure for determining the similarity of trajectories needs to be defined. Although research has been conducted that retrieved similar trajectories of moving objects in Euclidean space, very little research has been conducted on moving objects in the space defined by road networks. In terms of real applications, most moving objects are located in road network space rather than in Euclidean space. In similarity measure between trajectories, however, previous methods were based on Euclidean distance and only considered spatial similarity. In this paper, we define similarity measure based on POI and TOI in road network space. With this definition, we present methods to retrieve similar trajectories using spatio-temporal similarity between trajectories. We show clustering results for similar trajectories. Experimental results show that similar trajectories searched by each method and consistency rate between each method for the searched trajectories.

  • With the development of GPS and the popularity of mobile devices with positioning capability, collecting massive amounts of trajectory data is feasible and easy. The daily trajectories of moving objects convey a concise overview of their behaviors. Different social roles have different trajectory patterns. Therefore, we can identify users or groups based on similar trajectory patterns by mining implicit life patterns. However, most existing daily trajectories mining studies mainly focus on the spatial and temporal analysis of raw trajectory data but missing the essential semantic information or behaviors. In this paper, we propose a novel trajectory semantics calculation method to identify groups that have similar behaviors. In our model, we first propose a fast and efficient approach for stay regions extraction from daily trajectories, then generate semantic trajectories by enriching the stay regions with semantic labels. To measure the similarity between semantic trajectories, we design a semantic similarity measure model based on spatial and temporal similarity factor. Furthermore, a pruning strategy is proposed to lighten tedious calculations and comparisons. We have conducted extensive experiments on real trajectory dataset of Geolife project, and the experimental results show our proposed method is both effective and efficient.

New Approach of Evaluating Poomsae Performance with Inertial Measurement Unit Sensors (관성센서를 활용한 새로운 품새 경기력 평가 방법 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to present a new idea of methodology to evaluate Poomsae performance using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors in terms of signal processing techniques. Method: Ten collegian Taekwondo athletes, consisting of five Poomsae elite athletes (age: 21.4 ± 0.9 years, height: 168.4 ± 11.3 cm, weight: 65.0 ± 10.6 kg, experience: 12 ± 0.7 years) and five breaking demonstration athletes (age: 21.0 ± 0.0 years, height: 168.4 ± 4.7 cm, weight: 63.8 ± 8.2 kg, experience: 13.0 ± 2.1 years), voluntarily participated in this study. They performed three different black belt Poomsae such as Goryeo, Geumgang, and Taebaek Poomsae repeatedly twice. Repeated measured motion data on the wrist and ankle were calculated by the methods of cosine similarity and Euclidean distance. Results: The Poomsse athletes showed superior performance in terms of temporal consistency at Goryeo and Taebaek Poomsae, cosine similarity at Geumgang and Taebaek Poomsae, and Euclidian distance at Geumgang Poomsae. Conclusion: IMU sensor would be a useful tool for monitoring and evaluating within-subject temporal variability of Taekwondo Poomsae motions. As well it distinguished spatiotemporal characteristics among three different Poomsae.

Fast Video Detection Using Temporal Similarity Extraction of Successive Spatial Features (연속하는 공간적 특징의 시간적 유사성 검출을 이용한 고속 동영상 검색)

  • The growth of multimedia technology forces the development of video detection for large database management and illegal copy detection. To meet this demand, this paper proposes a fast video detection method to apply to a large database. The fast video detection algorithm uses spatial features using the gray value distribution from frames and temporal features using the temporal similarity map. We form the video signature using the extracted spatial feature and temporal feature, and carry out a stepwise matching method. The performance was evaluated by accuracy, extraction and matching time, and signature size using the original videos and their modified versions such as brightness change, lossy compression, text/logo overlay. We show empirical parameter selection and the experimental results for the simple matching method using only spatial feature and compare the results with existing algorithms. According to the experimental results, the proposed method has good performance in accuracy, processing time, and signature size. Therefore, the proposed fast detection algorithm is suitable for video detection with the large database.

  • As personalized recommendation of products and services is rapidly growing in importance, a number of studies provided fundamental knowledge and techniques for developing recommendation systems. Among them, the CF technique has been most widely used and has proven to be useful in many practices. However, current collaborative filtering (CF) technique has still considerable rooms for improving the effectiveness of recommendation systems: 1) a similarity function most systems use to find so-called like-minded people is not well defined in that similarity is computed from a single perspective of similarity concept; and 2) temporal information that contains the changing preference of customers needs to be taken into account when making recommendations. We hypothesize that integration of multiple aspects of similarity and utilization of temporal information will improve the accuracy of recommendations. The objective of this paper is to test the hypothesis through a series of experiments using MovieLens data. The experimental results show that the proposed recommendation system highly outperforms the conventional CF-based systems, confirming our hypothesis.

  • In order for a Power Assisted Wheelchair (PAW) to maintain a straight driving direction, the same force must be delivered to both wheels. However, a human has different strength between the right and left arms, and cannot control the force uniformly at all times. Therefore, appropriate assist torque shall be generated from unbalanced human torque inputs by detecting the user intention, in order to maintain direction uniformly in straight sections or change direction quickly in curved sections. In this study, a special function is proposed to detect the intention of drivers on the basis of temporal similarity between the input torque signals, and a torque balancing technique based on this function is proposed. In the experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed torque balancing method are verified.

Region Merging based on Temporal Motion Analysis (시간적 움직임 정보를 이용한 영역 합병)

  • We propose a new method for merging partical regions which have similar motion characteristics. In the proposed method, the trajectories of each partial regions are computed and the regions consisting a same object are merged by a similarity function defined in this paper. The similarity function is defined to take into consideration the motion characteristics of the trajectories. The proposed method shows good performance when the regions of an object show little variation in size and shape.

Similarity Measurement using Gabor Energy Feature and Mutual Information for Image Registration

  • Image registration is an essential process to analyze the time series of satellite images for the purpose of image fusion and change detection. The Mutual Information (MI) is commonly used as similarity measure for image registration because of its robustness to noise. Due to the radiometric differences, it is not easy to apply MI to multi-temporal satellite images using directly the pixel intensity. Image features for MI are more abundantly obtained by employing a Gabor filter which varies adaptively with the filter characteristics such as filter size, frequency and orientation for each pixel. In this paper we employed Bidirectional Gabor Filter Energy (BGFE) defined by Gabor filter features and applied the BGFE to similarity measure calculation as an image feature for MI. The experiment results show that the proposed method is more robust than the conventional MI method combined with intensity or gradient magnitude.

  • In this paper, a method for measuring rhythmic similarity between two sound signals for auditory memory game is proposed. The proposed method analyzes energy fluctuation, the temporal duration of energy peak, the timbre of two signals, and detects beat positions for each signal. Then, it determines the rhythm vector after compensating a difference in tempo and the number of beats between two signals. Finally, a method for rhythmic similarity measurement is defined as a function of the dissimilarity between two rhythm vectors and a difference in the number of beats. The rhythmic similarity measured by the proposed method and that by the subjective listening test are compared, and the correlation of 0.86 between two results is achieved.
