Effect of Tempering Temperature on Hydrogen Embrittlement of Cr-Mo Low Alloy Steels for High-pressure Gaseous Hydrogen Storage (고압수소 저장용 Cr-Mo계 저합금강의 수소취성에 미치는 템퍼링 온도의 영향)

  • This study examined how varying tempering temperatures affect the susceptibility of Cr-Mo low alloy steels to hydrogen embrittlement. A slow strain-rate test (SSRT) was carried out on the steels electrochemically pre-charged with hydrogen in order to examine the hydrogen embrittlement behavior. The results showed that the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the Cr-Mo low alloy steels improved with increasing tempering temperature. Thermal desorption analysis (TDA) revealed that diffusible hydrogen content decreased with increasing tempering temperature, accompanied by a slight increase in the peak temperature. This decrease in hydrogen content was likely due to a reduction in dislocation density which served as reversible hydrogen trap sites. These findings underline the significant role of tempering temperature in enhancing the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of Cr-Mo low alloy steels.

Effects of Tempering on Tensile Properties of Medium-Carbon Low-Alloy Steels (중탄소 저합금강의 인장성질에 미치는 템퍼링의 영향)

  • A series of Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steels were austenitized, quenched to martensite, and tempered at various temperature and time conditions. Tensile testing was conducted at room temperature with cylindrical specimens, and hardness was measured using Rockwell hardness tester. In the tempering stage I, high strain hardening and yield strength accounted for the high ultimate strength and hardness. In the tempering stage II, strengths and hardness linearly decreased with increasing tempering temperature. Specimens tempered in the temperin stage III showed incipient discontinuous yielding and tensile strengths only slightly higher than yield strengths. Ductilities decreased slightly in specimens tempered in the tempered martensite embrittlement range, and severely decreased in specimens tempered for 10 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ in the temper embrittlement range. Specimens tempered at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours showed recrystallized microstructures, a number of fine dimples, and increased strain hardening, probably due to the precipitation of alloy carbides. The simple formulae for the mechanical properties of these steels were suggested as a function of carbon content and Hollomon-Jaffe tempering parameter.

  • The resistance of metallic materials to ballistic penetration generally depends on a number of parameters related to projectile, impact, and armor plate. Recently, armor materials have been required to have various properties such as hardness, strength, and impact toughness in order to maintain an excellent ballistic resistance even after impact. In the present study, the influence of tempering on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an ARMOX 500T armor steel plate was investigated and then compared with those of S45C and SCM440 steels. As the tempering temperature increased, the hardness and strength gradually decreased, whereas the ductility and impact toughness clearly increased because the hardness, tensile, and impact properties were affected by the microstructural evolution and precipitation occurring during tempering. On the other hand, temper embrittlement appeared at tempering temperatures of 300 to $400^{\circ}C$ for the impact specimens tested at low temperature.

  • The effect of tempering temperature on the three point bending fatigue behavior of a P/M high speed steel JYPS-23 (1.28% C, 4.20% Cr, 6.40% W, 5.00% Mo, 3.10% V, bal. Fe) was investigated. The number of cycles to failure of the specimen austenitized at $1175^{\circ}C$ drastically increased with increasing tempering temperature. As tempering temperature increased from 500 to $620^{\circ}C$, the volume fraction and average size of carbides (MC or M6C) did not significantly changed, while hardness decreased drastically. The reduced hardness is due to the softening of matrix, which increased the resistance of the fatigue crack propagation. For a practical application, powder compacting test were also conducted with the P/M high speed steel punches tempered at 500, 580, and $620^{\circ}C$. The number of compacting cycles to failure of the punches also increased with increasing tempering temperature.

  • The effect of tempering temperature on the ultrasonic propagation velocity at SCM 440 steel quenched from $870^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ has been studied by metallurgical and crystallographical observation. The measurements of ultrasonic velocity were made on the specimen by appling an immersion ultrasonic pulse-echo technique with a constant frequency of 10 MHz. The quenched microstructure of this steel was a lath martensite. As the tempering temperature was increased, the martensite was transformed into the tempered martensite composed of cementite and carbide. The ultrasonic velocity increased with increasing the tempering temperature. It was thought that these were resulted from the microstructural transformation. The change of ultrasonic propagation velocity with quenching and tempering heat treatment was resulted from microstrain due to the change of internal stress. Considering these results concerning to the change of ultrasonic propagation velocity. the phenomena of microstructural transformation were estimated. Consequently, it was thought that the degree of quenching and tempered heat treatment of steel could be nondestructively evaluated with the change of ultrasonic propagation velocity.

  • Effect of austenitizing temperatures on the impact value of the AISI 4140 steel after repetition of spheroidization and cold deep drawing treatment has been studied. Sufficient dissolution of carbide was shown after austenitizing at the high temperature of $950^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, the impact value was remarkably increased by tempering of this high temperature austenitized steel at the tempering temperature ranges between $570^{\circ}C$ and $630^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, remarkable decrease in the impact values and elongations were shown by tempering the low temperature-austenitized ($870^{\circ}C$) steel due to the coarsening of undissolved-carbide existed at the austenitizing temperature.

  • 440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content(~0.5wt.%) and addition of small amount of vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum 0.4wt.%, 0.4wt.% and 0.68wt.% respectively were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and tempering temperatures on the intergranular corrosion were investigated through the method of DL-EPR(Double-electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation). It was thought that the highest DOS(Degree of sensitization) of specimens was obtained at the tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ regardless of types of alloy because of the precipitation of Cr7C3. Addition of vanadium lowered DOS a little above the tempering temperature of $550^{\circ}C$. It was considered to be effected by precipitation of VC carbides. Intergranular corrosion was influenced more by tempering temperature than by alloying elements of V, W and Mo.

Influence of Tempering Temperature and Microstructure on Wear Properties of Low Alloy PM Steel with 1-2% Ni Addition

  • The effect of tempering temperature and microstructure on dry sliding wear behavior of quenched and tempered PM with 0.3% graphite and 1-2% Ni steels was investigated. The sintered specimens were quenched from $890^{\circ}C$ and then tempered at $200^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Wear tests were carried out on the quenched$\neq$tempered specimens under dry sliding wear conditions using a pin-on-disk type machine at constant load and speed. The experimental results showed that the wear coefficient effectively increased with increasing tempering temperature and decreased with increasing Ni content.

Effects of 27.12 MHz Radio Frequency on the Rapid and Uniform Tempering of Cylindrical Frozen Pork Loin (Longissimus thoracis et lumborum)

  • Quality characteristics of frozen cylindrical pork loin were evaluated following different tempering methods: 27.12 MHz curved-electrode radio frequency (RF) at 1000 and 1500 W, and forced-air convection (FC) or water immersion (WI) at $4^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. The developed RF tempering system with the newly designed curved-electrode achieved relatively uniform tempering compared to a parallel-plate RF system. FC tempering at $4^{\circ}C$ was the most time-consuming process, whereas 1500 W RF was the shortest. Pork sample drip loss, water holding capacity, color, and microbiological quality declined after WI tempering at $20^{\circ}C$. Conversely, RF tempering yielded minimal sample changes in drip loss, microstructure, color, and total aerobic bacteria counts, along with relatively uniform internal sample temperature distributions compared to those of the other tempering treatments. These results indicate that curved-electrode RF tempering could be used to provide rapid defrosting with minimal quality deterioration of cylindrical frozen meat block products.

Effects of Tempering Temperature and Time on the Slip Melting Point of Fats (처리 온도 및 시간이 고형 유지의 상승 융점에 미치는 영향)

  • Among the conditions changes for the slip melting point of tempering temperature and time were studied. The results were treated below at $4^{\circ}C$, slip M.P. were not effected by tempering time. But slip M.P. of lard and palm oil had fallen treated at $10^{\circ}C$, the reason was that low melting triglycerides did not form the perfect crystals. Therefore, in order to measure the slip M.P. should be decrease the free energy and from stable crystallization of fats. Recommendable tempering temperature was treated at $4^{\circ}C$.
