In fast reactors, restructuring of the fuel micro-structure driven by high temperature and high temperature gradient can cause the formation of columnar grains. The non-spheroidal shape and the non-uniform temperature field in such columnar grains implies that standard models for fission gas diffusion can not be applied. To tackle this issue, we present a reduced order model for the fission gas diffusion process which is applicable in different geometries and with non-uniform temperature fields, maintaining a computational requirement in line with its application in fuel performance codes. This innovative application of reduced order models as meso-scale tools within fuel performance codes represents a first-of-a-kind achievement that can be extended beyond fission gas behaviour.

Direct-contact condensation experiments of atmospheric steam and steam/air mixture on subcooled water flowing co-currently in a rectangular channel are carried out uszng an infrared thermal camera system to develop a temperature measurement method. The inframetrics Model 760 Infrared Thermal Imaging Radiometer is used for the measurement of the temperature field of the water film for various flow conditions. The local heat transfer coefficient is calculated using the bulk temperature gradient along the (low direction. It is also found that the temperature profiles can be used to understand the interfacial condensation heat transfer characteristics according to the flow conditions such as noncondensable gas effects, inclination effect, and flow rates.
The objective of this study was to investigate features of transverse crack occurrence and propagation in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) when subjected to environmental loading. The finite element model of CRCP was developed and the element removal method was implemented to predict the crack propagation process. To investigate the effect of the type of environmental loading on the CRCP behavior and cracking aspects, the following three different cases were considered: (1) the temperature gradient between top and bottom of the slab does not vary and the constant temperature drop throughout the depth occurs; (2) the temperature at the slab bottom does not vary and the temperature gradient increases; and (3) the temperature between the mid-depth and the bottom of the slab is the same and does not vary and the temperature at the top decreases. The analysis results showed that the crack occurrence and propagation through the depth of the slab in CRCP were significantly affected by the type of environmental loading. The changes in stress distribution and displacements during the crack occurrence and propagation process could also be investigated.

A 5-kW MCFC stack with $3,000cm^2$ electrode area was tested to investigate cell performance and operation characteristics. The stack performance was evaluated based on electrical output and I-V change. The stack showed high cell performance (7.6 kW) than the design performance and operated for more than 5,760 hours, but a significant temperature gradient inside the stack was observed. A 3-dimensional mathematical model for molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) was developed for the purpose of simulation of stack performance during the operation. The model was solved using PHOENICS, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The simulation result demonstrated a close prediction of the temperature gradient and stack performance.
In this article, frequency characteristics, and sensitivity analysis of a size-dependent laminated composite cylindrical nanoshell under bi-directional thermal loading using Nonlocal Strain-stress Gradient Theory (NSGT) are presented. The governing equations of the laminated composite cylindrical nanoshell in thermal environment are developed using Hamilton's principle. The thermodynamic equations of the laminated cylindrical nanoshell are obtained using First-order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT) and Fourier-expansion based Generalized Differential Quadrature element Method (FGDQM) is implemented to solve these equations and obtain natural frequency and critical temperature of the presented model. The novelty of the current study is to consider the effects of bi-directional temperature loading and sensitivity parameter on the critical temperature and frequency characteristics of the laminated composite nanostructure. Apart from semi-numerical solution, a finite element model was presented using the finite element package to simulate the response of the laminated cylindrical shell. The results created from finite element simulation illustrates a close agreement with the semi-numerical method results. Finally, the influences of temperature difference, ply angle, length scale and nonlocal parameters on the critical temperature, sensitivity, and frequency of the laminated composite nanostructure are investigated, in details.

The main purpose of this study lies on the development of micro dilution tunnel based on the Sierra Dilution chamber model. As a primary examination, characteristics of flow and temperature distributions during the steady dilution process in dilution chamber are observed with numerical analysis. The penetration of dilution air through porous tube as well as wall temperature and temperature gradient inside porous tube are examined. The thermophoretic velocity in terms of temperature behavior inside porous tube are defined and examined. Based on the ratio of penetration and thermophoretic velocities, all part of porous tube are shown to be safe from the particulate depositions. However, The inlet portion of porous tube in addition to the portion of impinging of dilution air are marginally safe from the particulate depositions. Generally the safer design against particulate deposition is required in provision f3r steady dilution process and for transient process as well.
This paper presents a simplified model to study post-buckling behaviours of the axially restrained steel column at elevated temperatures in fire. The contribution of axial deformation to the curvature of column section is included in theoretical equations. The possible unloading at the convex side of the column when buckling occurs is considered in the stress-strain relationship of steel at elevated temperatures. Parameters that affect structural behaviours of the axial restrained column in fire are studied. The axial restraint cause an increase in the axial force before the column buckles; the buckling temperature of restrained columns will be lower than non-restrained steel columns. However, the axial force of a restrained column decreases after the column buckles with the elevation of temperatures, so make use of the post-buckling behaviour can increase the critical temperature of restrained columns. Columns with temperature gradient across the section will produce lower axial force at elevated temperatures.
Using an extensive database, a sensitivity analysis across fifteen machine learning (ML) classifiers was conducted to evaluate the impact of various data manipulation techniques, evaluation metrics, and explainability tools. The results of this sensitivity analysis reveal that the examined models can achieve an accuracy ranging from 72-93% in predicting the fire-induced spalling of concrete and denote the light gradient boosting machine, extreme gradient boosting, and random forest algorithms as the best-performing models. Among such models, the six key factors influencing spalling were maximum exposure temperature, heating rate, compressive strength of concrete, moisture content, silica fume content, and the quantity of polypropylene fiber. Our analysis also documents some conflicting results observed with the deep learning model. As such, this study highlights the necessity of selecting suitable models and carefully evaluating the presence of possible outcome biases.

The helical flow regime was investigated by using DPIV when the rotating Reynolds number is small. The wall slits were azimuthally located along the inner wall of outer cylinder and the slits number of each model was 9 and 18, another plain wall model was also studied for comparison purpose. The helical vortex flow regime can be observed in all the three models. The negative temperature gradients determine the direction of the rotation and movement of the helical vortex. But the helical wavy vortex flow can only be found in the plane and 9-slit models. And the result showed that the existence of slit wall accelerated the transition process.
This paper deals with the computational modeling of buoyancy-driven turbulent heat transfer involving spatially uniform volumetric heat sources in semicircular geometry. The Launder & Sharma low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model without any modifications and the SIMPLER computational algorithm were used for the numerical modeling, which was incorporated into the new computer code CORE-TNC. This computer code was subsequently benchmarked with the Mini-ACOPO experimental data in the modified Rayleigh number range of 2$\times$10$^{13}$$\times$10$^{14}$ . The general trends of the velocity and temperature fields were well predicted by the model used, and the calculated isotherm patterns were found to be very similiar to those observed in previous experimental investigations. The deviation between the Mini-ACOPO experimental data and the corresponding numerical results obtained with CORE-TNC for the average Nusselt number was less than 30% using fine grid in the near-wall region and the three-point difference formula for the wall temperature gradient. With isothermal pool boundaries, heat was convected predominantly to the upper and adjacent lateral surfaces, and the bottom surface received smaller heat fluxes.
