  • Brittle microstructure created in a heat affected zone (HAZ) during the welding of low alloy steel can be eliminated by post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). If the PWHT is not possible during a repair welding, the controlled bead depositions of multi-pass welding should be applied to obtain tempering effect on the HAZ without PWHT. In order to anticipate and control the tempering effect during the temper bead welding, the definition of temperature curve obtained from the analytical solution was suggested in this research. Because the analytical solution for heat flow is expressed as a mathematical equation of weld parameters, it may be effective in anticipating the effect of each weld parameter on the tempering in HAZ during the successive bead depositions. The reheating effect by the successive bead layer on the brittle coarse grained HAZ formed by earlier bead deposition was estimated by comparing the overlapped distance between the temperature curves in the HAZ. Three layered weld specimens of SA508 base metal with A52 filler were prepared by controlling heat input ratio between layers. The tempering effect anticipated by using the overlapped distance between the temperature curves was verified by measuring the micro-hardness distribution in the HAZ of prepared specimens. The temperature curve obtained from analytical solution was expected as a good tool to find optimal temper bead welding conditions.

  • The experiment of thermal performance about cross flow type cooling tower was conducted in this study. Generally the ambient air condition can affect the thermal performance of cooling tower to improve or not. However it is hard to control the cooling water temperature that we want under bad air condition or during rainy season. In this paper, the effect of variables, which the ambient air have. especially wet-bulb temperature, are experimentally investigated for controlling the cooling water temperature more successfully. The result is that there is appropriate air flow rate in respective air condition to preserve the cooling performance in the cooling tower and the maximum air flow rate can't overcome the approach under bad air condition.

  • Cooling and heating equipments of railroad passenger cabin is one of the most important part in keeping the good thermal comfort of the passengers. The bad performance of these equipments usually results in the comfort of the passengers. However, there is no testing method for cooling and heating equipments during manufacturing the passenger car, and calculation method is frequently used. Many railroad operators spend a lot of money for the maintenance. In this study, a new environmental performance test for railroad passenger cabin was suggested. The temperature of the chamber will be changed from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. The performance test of cooling and heating equipment in controlling the passenger cabin temperature was carried out under various temperature condition. The testing method to investigate the effect of artificial sunlight irradiation on the passenger cabin temperature was also suggested.

  • Recently, the internal combustion engines have focused on reducing the $CO_2$ gas in order to cope with severe regulations for fuel economy. Therefore, various new technologies have been developed. Among them, cooling system is spotlighted because it has great effect on fuel economy. In this study, we measured the friction losses of engine parts according to engine speed and oil temperature. We also obtained optimized oil temperature which has the minimum friction losses. Then, we selected optimized oil temperature range and gave informations of friction losses for each engine parts. In addition, we analyzed relationship between coolant temperature and oil temperature by using engine performance test system. From this experiment, we obtained the database for relationship between coolant temperature and oil temperature. Then, we found the optimal temperature about engine oil. We analyzed BSFC and exhaust emissions by controlling the high coolant temperture. If we controlled coolant temperature more higher, BSFC has a little difference but exhaust emissions such as THC and CO have reduced. By using these experimental results, we predicted that IC engine have more low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions by optimized cooling control strategy.

  • Radiolysis is the process of decreasing in Radio-Chemical Purity (RCP) of [$^{18}F$]FDG by direct effect and indirect effect of self Radio-activity. The objective of our study was to figure out the ideal conditions which minimize damages of quality of [$^{18}F$]FDG using radical scavenger and controlling temperature of storage.

  • The effect of non-thermal plasma on diffusion flames in co-flow jets has been studied experimentally by adopting a dielectric barrier discharge technique. The generation of streamers was enhanced with a flame due to increased reduced electric fields by high temperature burnt gas and the abundance of ions in the flame region. The effect of streamers on flame behavior reveals that the flame length was significantly decreased as the applied voltage increased and the yellow luminosity by the radiation of soot particles was also significantly reduced. The formation of PAH and soot was influenced appreciably by the non-thermal plasma, while the flame temperature and the concentration of major species were not influence much with the plasma generation. The results demonstrated that the application of non-thermal plasma can be a viable technique in controlling soot generation in flames with low power consumption in the order of 1 W.

  • Thermolectric devices could convert temperature gradient into electricity (Seebeck effect) and electric power into temperature gradient across the themoelectric element (Peltier effect). $Bi_2Te_3$ has been widely used as thermoelectric material for more than 40 years, due to the superior thermoelctric characteristics. However, Bi and Te materials are predicted to face supply shortage, giving strong necessity for the development of new thermoelctric materials. Based on the theoretical prediction, nanostructure are expected to give dramatic enhnacement of thermoelectirc characteristics by controlling phonon propagation. Thus, silicon, which had been considered as improper material for thermoelectricity, is now being considered as strong cadidate material for thermoelectricity. This review will focus on the nanotechnology applied research activities in silicon as thermoelectric materials.

  • Drawing and normalizing are efficient means for controlling strength, fatigue and machinability of free machining steel. Normally strength and machinability are conflicting properties which need to be optimized. In this study, the effects of normalizing temperature and reduction of area on strength, fatigue and machinability were investigated. Fine grains were generated at lower normalizing temperature and fatigue life was increased with decreasing grain size. Matrix was work hardened and elongated with increasing reduction of area. Inclusions also were elongated and cross-sectional area of inclusions along drawing axis was decreased. The effects of work hardening and grain size on fatigue life were significant, but only work hardening affected machinability. Shape and distribution of inclusions after drawing had little effect on fatigue life and machinability.

  • The microhardness of rhenium sheets was determined as a function of indentation load and temperature. The temperature dependence of the microhardness between room temperatures and $1000 ^{\circ}C$was studied using a hot microhardness tester equipped with a Vickers indenter. The load dependence of the microhardness was investigated using oth a Vickers and a Knoop indenter. The indentation size effect (ISE) was well explained using the normalized Meyers law. The hardness of the annealed rhenium sheet approached that of the as-rolled sheets at large indentation loads because of work-hardening under the indenter during indentation. The hardness at zero load(obtained from extrapolation of the load dependence of the hardness) suggested that the hardness is controlled by two different mech-anisms having different thermal activation. At low temperature the activation energy for the mechanism controlling the hardness was approximately 0.02 eV , Whereas at higher temperatures that was approximately 0.15eV. The tranisi-tion temperature between the two different controlling mechanisms was about $250^{\circ}C$.
