  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of infrared temperature measurements compared to axillary temperature in order to detect fever in patients. Methods: Studies published between 1946 and 2012 from periodicals indexed in Ovid Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, KoreaMed, NDSL, KERIS and other databases were selected using the following key words: "infrared thermometer". QUADAS-II was utilized to assess the internal validity of the diagnostic studies. Selected studies were analyzed through a meta-analysis using MetaDisc 1.4. Results: Twenty-one diagnostic studies with high methodological quality were included representing 3,623 subjects in total. Results of the meta-analysis showed that the pooled sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) of infrared tympanic thermometers were 0.73 (95% CI 0.70~0.75), 0.92 (95% CI 0.91~0.92), and 0.90, respectively. For axillary temperature readings, the pooled sensitivity was 0.67 (95% CI 0.62~0.73), the pooled specificity was 0.87 (95% CI 0.85~0.90), and the AUC was 0.80. Conclusion: Infrared tympanic temperature can predict axillary temperature in normothermic and in febrile patients with an acceptable level of diagnostic accuracy. However, further research is necessary to substantiate this finding in patients with hyperthermia.

  • This paper describes on the temperature characteristics of a SDB(silicon-wafer direct bonding) SOI(silicon-on-insulator) Hall sensor. Using the buried oxide $SiO_2$ as a dielectrical isolation layer, a SDB SOI Hall sensor without pn junction isolation has been fabricated on the Si/$SiO_2$/Si structure. The Hall voltage and the sensitivity of the implemented SOI Hall sensor show good linearity with respect to the applied magnetic flux density and supplied current. In the temperature range of 25 to $300^{\circ}C$, the shifts of TCO(temperature coefficient of the offset voltage) and TCS(temperature coefficient of the product sensitivity) are less than ${\pm}6.7{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ and ${\pm}8.2{\times}10^{-4}/^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results indicate that the SDB SOI structure has potential for the development of a silicon Hall sensor with a high-sensitivity and high-temperature operation.

  • This paper is concerned with the empirical flow stress constitutive equation of steel sheets for an auto-body with the variation of temperature and strain rate. In order to represent the strain rate and temperature dependent behavior of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rates accurately, an empirical hardening equation is suggested by modifying the well-known Khan-Huang-Liang model. The temperature and strain rate dependent sensitivity of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rate is considered in the hardening equation by coupling the strain, the strain rate and the temperature. The hardening equation suggested gives good correlation with experimental results at various intermediate strain rates and temperatures. In order to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the suggested model quantitatively, the standard deviation of the fitted result from the experimental one is compared with those of the other two well-known empirical constitutive models such as the Johnson-Cook and the Khan-Huang-Liang models. The comparison demonstrates that the suggested model gives relatively well description of experimental results at various strain rates and temperatures.

  • We substantially increased the temperature sensitivity of a fiber Bragg grating temperature sensor by gluing it onto a piece of bi-metal strip. The temperature-induced Bragg wavelength shift is increased upto 5 times more than that of the intrinsic FBG sensor by the strain effect from the deflected bi-metal. We showed the feasibility of the proposed sensor by comparing the temperature measuring experiments with those of the intrinsic FBG sensors. Also we measured temperature varying the length of the bi-metal pieces and analyzed the result effect of it.

  • The temperature changes are very important in improving the accuracy of the load forecasting during the summer. It is because the cooling load in summer contribute to the increasing of the load. This paper proposes a weekend load forecasting algorithm using the temperature change characteristic in a summer of Jeju. The days before and after weekends in Jeju, when the load curves are quite different from those of normal weekdays. The temperature change characteristic are obtained by using weekends peak load and high temperature data. And load forecasted based on the sensitivity between unit temperature changes and load variations. Load forecast data with better accuracy are obtained by using the proposed temperature changes than by using the ordinary daily peak load forecasting. The method can be used to reduce the error rate of load forecast.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of steel plate oxidation with temperature in a simulated furnace. Used steel plates were a general steel and a high tensile steel. Porous media burner (PM burner) used in model furnace was made for uniform temperature profile. The surrounding temperature was controlled by adjusting the flow rate of the mixture in the combustor. Oxide layer analysis was performed using SEM image analysis and EDS line scanning. Both steel sheets showed a tendency to increase the thickness of the steel sheet surface oxide layer as the temperature increases, and it was confirmed that the flaking phenomenon in surface oxidation layer appeared when the temperature was above a certain temperature.

  • In this paper, the thermal sensitivity, i .e. the temperature rise per unit acoustic power, was newly defined and proposed as a performance parameter of a tissue mimicking material. Eatable tofu (bean curd) manufactured by a factory was selected as a sample material for the experiment. The temperature changes were measured not only with the variation of ultrasonic irradiation time, acoustic power, depth from the sample surface. and the distance from the source transducer while adjusting the frequency to 8 MHz but also with the variation of frequency while acoustic power. depth from the sample surface. and the distance from the source transducer keeping constant. As a result of a consideration for the transformation of the measured temperature changes to thermal sensitivities. the thermal sensitivity was found to be sufficient to use as a Performance parameter for tissue mimicking material. The tofu as a tissue mimicking material showed the maximum thermal sensitivity at 10 MHz, as is a significant result to imply the possibility that the thermal sensitivity of real human tissue strong1y depends on the frequency.

  • The study uses department of the sensitivity and fuzzy reasoning, one of artificial intelligence algorithms, so that develop LED lighting system based on fuzzy reasoning for systematical control of the LED color temperature. In the area of sensitivity engineering, by considering the relation between color and emotion expressed as an adjective word, the corresponding sensitivity word can be determined, By taking into consideration the relation between the brain wave measured from the human brain and the color temperature, the preferred lesson subject can be determined. From the decision of the sensitivity word and the lesson subject, we adjust the color temperature of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) LED. In addition, by using the information of the latitude and the longitude from GPS(Global Positioning System), we can calculate the on-line moving altitude of sun. By using the sensor information of both temperature and humidity, we can calculate the discomfort index. By considering the altitude of sun as well as the value of the discomfort index, the illumination of W(white) LED and the color temperature of RGB LED can be determined. The (LED) sensitivity lighting control system is bulit up by considering the sensitivity word, the lesson subject, the altitude of sun, and the discomfort index The developed sensitivity lighting control system leads to more suitable atmosphere and also the enhancement of the efficiency of lesson subjects as well as business affairs.

  • Thin films of tin-oxide were prepared by chemical vapor deposition technique using the direct of SnCl4. Resistivity and carrier concentration of deposited SnO2 thin film were measured by 4-point probe method and Hall effect measurement. The results showed the remarkable dependence of electrical properties on the deposition temperature. As the deposition temperature increased, resistivity of deposited film initially decreased to a minimum value of ~10-3$\Omega$cm at 50$0^{\circ}C$, and then rapidly increased to ~10$\Omega$cm at $700^{\circ}C$. Electrical conductance of these films was measured in exposure to H2 gas. It was found that gas sensitivity was affected combination of film thickness and intrinsic resistivity of deposited film. Gas sensitivity increased with decrease of film thickness. Fairly high sensitivity to H2 gas was obtained for the film deposited at $700^{\circ}C$. Optimum operation temperature of sensing was 30$0^{\circ}C$ for H2 gas.
