  • A group of universities have come together with the aim of designing and developing Small Aperture Robotic Telescopes (SmART) for use by students to observe variable stars and transient follow-ups. The group is deliberating on the components of the robotic system; e.g. the telescope, the mount, the back-end camera, control software, and their integration keeping in mind the scientific objectives. The prototype might then be replicated by all the participating universities to provide round the clock observations from sites spread evenly in longitude across the globe. Progress made so far is reported in this paper.

  • KITSAT-3, launched at May 26 1999, has an earth observation optical payload named MEIS (Multi-spectral Earth Imaging System). The MEIS is a Managin mirror telescope of aperture size of 95mm, and it images the ground with the ground sampling distance of 13.8m over 48km at the altitude of 720km using three different observations bands. This paper first presents the design and then the optics, relating results of manufacturing, integration and test. Finally it briefly discusses the current status of MEIS operation.

  • For slitless spectroscopy, we have installed the Volume Phase Holographic (VPH) gratings in the filter wheel of the SQUEAN on the 2.1m telescope at McDonald Observatory in Texas, United States. This system can effectively take spectra and monitor the variabilities of many sources, such as quasi-stellar objects, supernovae, and active galactic nuclei. On the single image frame, there are many spectra of the point sources. Therefore, a target extraction needs to trace along the tilted dispersion and to minimize the confusions by other sources. We present a real-time reduction software that has the functions with spectra extraction and wavelength calibration.

  • We report on a series of science articles presented in the Children's magazine 고래가그랬어. The monthly articles (appearing since 2016) highlight current issues in Physics and Astronomy with particular emphasis on science being conducted in Korea. Reporting is performed by interviewing experts in their respective fields. In an effort to encourage children to envisage themselves as scientists, interviews are taken predominantly from Korean early-career researchers. Gender balance is obtained through a careful selection of interviewees ensuring that children are exposed to a broad cross-section of science researchers. This series has introduced children to the 1st detection of Gravitational Waves, the KMTnet telescope system, the Korean Very Long Baseline Interferometric Network, KGMT, IBS Axion experiments, and many other experiments and discoveries.

  • Current large observational projects perform both static and dynamic sky surveys. The Thirty-Minute Target of Opportunity (TMT) is the project focusing on the dynamic sky survey using Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) that is the best observing system to investigate the dynamic sky. TMT aims to perform and experiment on following components : 1) to select transient or variable sources having hour to day scale cadences for future science cases, 2) to optimize the observation strategy for these objects, 3) to provide automated photometric pipelines for the time series data, and 4) to test the data release environment for all astronomers. In the near future, it is expected that a huge number of events will be alerted through large area surveys such as LSST. Therefore, the TMT project will provide opportunities to prepare the future large survey era as well as to understand the nature of interesting astronomical events.

  • We develop a new auto-guiding system for the Camera for QUasars in the EArly uNiverse (CQUEAN). CQUEAN is an optical CCD camera system attached to the 2.1-m Otto-Struve Telescope (OST) at McDonald Observatory, USA. The new auto-guiding system differs from the original one in the following: instead of the cassegrain focus of the OST, it is attached to the finder scope; it has its own filter system for observation of bright targets; and it is controlled with the CQUEAN Auto-guiding Package, a newly developed auto-guiding program. Finder scope commands a very wide field of view at the expense of poorer light gathering power than that of the OST. Based on the star count data and the limiting magnitude of the system, we estimate there are more than 5.9 observable stars with a single FOV using the new auto-guiding CCD camera. An adapter is made to attach the system to the finder scope. The new auto-guiding system successfully guided the OST to obtain science data with CQUEAN during the test run in 2014 February. The FWHM and ellipticity distributions of stellar profiles on CQUEAN, images guided with the new auto-guiding system, indicate similar guiding capabilities with the original auto-guiding system but with slightly poorer guiding performance at longer exposures, as indicated by the position angle distribution. We conclude that the new auto-guiding system has overall similar guiding performance to the original system. The new auto-guiding system will be used for the second generation CQUEAN, but it can be used for other cassegrain instruments of the OST.

  • In this paper, we describe the proposed KVN (Korean VLBI Network) clock system in order to make the observation of the VLBI effectively. In general, the GPS system is widely used for the time information in the single dish observation. In the case of VLBI observation, a very high precise frequency standard is needed to perform the observation in accordance with the observation frequency using the radio telescope with over 100km distance. The objective of the high precise clock system is to insert the time-tagging information to the observed data and to synchronize it with the same clock in overall equipments which used in station. The AHM (Active Hydrogen Maser) and clock system are basically used as a frequency standard equipments at VLBI station. This system is also adopted in KVN. The proposed KVN clock system at each station consists of the AHM, GPS time comparator, standard clock system, time distributor, and frequency standard distributor. The basic experiments were performed to check the AHM system specification and to verify the effectiveness of implemented KVN clock system. In this paper, we briefly introduce the KVN clock system configuration and experimental results.

  • Piping systems play an important role in gas and oil transferring system. In the piping system, there are many elements, such as valves and flow meters. In order to check their normal operating conditions, each signal from each element is displayed on the monitor in the pipe control room. By the way, there are several accidental cases in the piping system even if all signals from the local elements are judged to be normal on the monitor in the control room. Further, opposite cases often happen even the monitor shows abnormal while the local elements work normal. To overcome this abnormal functions, it is not so easy to construct the environment in which sensors detecting the working states of all elements installed in the piping system. In this paper, a new non-contact measurement technique which can calculate the elements' delicate displacements by using a PIV(particle image velocimetry) and diagnose their working states by using a neural network is proposed. The measurement system consists of a host computer, a micro system, a telescope and a high-resolution camera. As a preliminary test, the constructed measurement system was applied to measure delicate vibrations of mobile phones. For practical application, a pneumatic system was measured by the constructed system.

  • This paper defines an effectiveness index for optical continuous observation of unknown space objects and presents a range of design variables combinations that can satisfy the effectiveness index from a telescope/mount control system perspective using integrated simulation. The overall system-level simulation was implemented and the tracking performance was analyzed by considering design variables such as target position prediction and frame rate, image processing time and measurement error, target trajectory characteristics, and maneuver performance of mount gimbal. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the continuous tracking performance of the optical observation system is dependent on the combination of frame rate and mount maneuver performance. In a situation where an optical observation system is designed or a similar system is implemented using COTS, an appropriate combination of parameters between design variables can be found through effectiveness analysis simulation as in this study.
