Social Media as a Technology for Being : The Qualities of Being on Social Media and the New Problematics of Social Media Research

  • What prevails in the today's research on social media is a functional view of technology. Technology is regarded as a set of technical devices used to conduct specific social functions, such as personal communication, social networking, public posting, and corporate advertising, among others. This paper proposes that such a functional view of technology renders social media research unduly limited and constrained in its scope, level, and direction of inquiry. Problematizing on some representative social media research efforts in the field of IS, this paper provides an alternative perspective, that is, to view social media as a technology-for-being that exerts a deeper level of influence on our existence, molding and shaping the nature and mode of being itself. Such a technology-for-being perspective has been rarely explored or subscribed to in the present IS social media research. Building upon the new conception of social media as a technology-for-being, this essay explores the quality of being in the context of social media. Five such qualities are discussed, including virtuality, materiality, externality, liquidity, and hybridity. The essay also explores the deep structural problems of research to guide future social media research. Six of such problems include Problematize-the-Natural, Follow-the-Actor, Welcome-the-Frankenstein, Weber-meets-Frankenstein, Freud-meets-Frankenstein, and Marx-meets-Frankenstein. The essay concludes with discussions on the implications of the essay, its limitations, and suggestions for future work.

접촉 표면의 강성 변화에 따른 박테리아의 군집 패턴 (Bacterial Pattern Formation in Response to the Stiffness of Substrates)

  • Animal cells show different behaviors in response to the mechanical properties of the substrates. We hypothesize that the rigidity of the substrates also affects the bacterial motility and controls the colony dynamics. It is found that the colony size of Escherichia colis and Bacillus subtilis grown on the agar plates is correlated with agarose gel concentrations and thus with the substrate rigidity. High- resolution microscopic imaging reveals that bacteria in single colonies form different aggregation patterns on the agar plates with varying gel concentration. We measured the apparent diffusion coefficients in the agarose gel plates made with different gel concentrations. Mathematical modeling and quantitative imaging of dye dispersion in the agar plates suggest that there is a close connection between the diffusion rate and the colony size. Nanoscale pore structures and kinetic constraints in the porous media may have an effect on bacterial colony dynamics.

  • 컴퓨터 그래픽스, 실시간 렌더링, 모션 캡처, 인공지능 기술의 발전과 함께 양방향 소통이 가능한 가상존재가 콘텐츠 산업에 등장하였다. 기술 및 플랫폼의 상용화로 인해 양방향 소통 가상존재가 제작되고 있지만, 가상존재들이 어떤 특성이 있으며 각 분야에서 어떻게 활용될 수 있을 것인지에 대한 분석이 부족하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 가상존재 제작을 위한 기술적 배경조사와 사례연구를 통해 양방향 소통 가상존재가 감정 교류에 필요한 특성에 대해 분석한다. 감정 교류에 필요한 특성은 상호작용, 개성, 자율성으로 나누어졌으며, 이 특성들을 중심으로 가상존재를 분류하며 양방향 소통 가상존재가 콘텐츠 분야에서 어떻게 활용될 것인지에 대해 고찰한다. 본 연구는 가상존재 제작에 필요한 기술적 배경 조사와 가상존재가 양방향 소통에 필요한 특성을 분석하는 기초연구로써 앞으로 가상존재를 활용한 콘텐츠 제작 및 활용 연구에 있어 유의미한 시사점을 제공할 것이라고 기대한다.

현대 패션디자인에 나타난 디지털문화현상 (A Study on Digital Culture Phenomenon Shown in the Modernly Fashion Design)

  • A concept of 'digital' is changing a living pattern of moderners, with having influence on the whole life of modern society. The purpose of this study is arrange the frame of conformity to the 'fashion as culture' by considering the social and cultural phenomena being shown in relation to digital, which is a concept being watched most for the 21st century and by trying to analyze a tendency of digital culture being shown in the modernly fashion design based on this. The digital culture, which is a concept of generalizing the phenomena of interactional changes in the sub-structure being derived by digital technology, is being shown as a tendency of fusionization and globalization, and due to this, the culture of digital nomads is being formed. On the other hand, a tendency of amenity caused by the reaction against the coldly digital technology, is forming one axis of digital culture. As the culture, which experiences the process of a change by digital technology, is reflected even on the fashion, the fusion of technology and the human body, brought about the appearance and the development of the artificial body, by allowing the wearable computer to be introduced to fashion and by being connected directly to the body. This means the expansion of range for fashion. The destruction of a border between space and space, is making an opportunity of forming another ego inside the cyber space, with bringing about the mixed loading between the cyber space and the real space. As the border between the cyber space and the real space is being collapsed, the space of newly self-realization is being created. The collapse of gender is being shown as the pursuit of gender, which is a nomadic concept of not giving priority to anywhere of male gender and female gender. The tendency of sensitive design introduced the sports look as the largely fashion trend. Fascinated with Zen thoughts is leading to a response to the swiftly and coldly social conditions caused by machine. The digital culture by digital technology and the fashion tendency being shown by its influence, meet the needs of self-realization and self-expansion for a human being, and satisfy the needs for the expression of self-identity for a human being, and enable the search for introspection about inner existence inside the self.

  • Along with the development of the 4th Industrial Revolution technology, artificial intelligence technology is also being used in the field of systems engineering. This study analyzed the development status of artificial intelligence technology in the areas of systems engineering core processes such as stakeholder needs and requirements definition, system requirement analysis, and system architecture definition, and presented future technology development directions. In the definition of stakeholder needs and requirements, technology development is underway to compensate for the shortcomings of the existing requirement extraction methods. In the field of system requirement analysis, technology for automatically checking errors in individual requirements and technology for analyzing categories of requirements are being developed. In the field of system architecture definition, a technology for automatically generating architectures for each system sector based on requirements is being developed. In this study, these contents were summarized and future development directions were presented.

Lack of Efficacy of Tai Chi in Improving Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Survivors: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

  • Background: It is controversial whether Tai Chi (TC) benefits breast cancer survivors (BCS) on quality of life (QoL). We therefore undertook a meta-analysis to assess this question. Materials and Methods: A computerized search through electronic databases was performed to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The primary outcome was QoL, while secondary outcomes included body mass index (BMI), bone mineral density (BMD), and muscle strength. Results: Five RCTs involving 407 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled standardized mean differences were 0.10 (95% confidence interval (CI): -0.35-0.54) for physical well-being, 0.03 (95%CI: -0.18-0.25) for social/family well-being, 0.24 (95%CI: 0.02-0.45) for emotional well-being, 0.23 (95%CI: -0.03-0.49) for functional well-being, and 0.09 (95%CI: -0.19-0.36) for additional concerns. TC failed to improve BMI, BMD, and muscle strength. Conclusions: There is currently lack of sufficient evidence to support TC improving QoL and other important clinical endpoints.

  • 화장품 산업에서 웰빙과 관련하여 inner beauty와 body shaping 상품을 비롯하여 SPA, esthetique, mass-customization, organics, naturals 등에 관련된 상품개발이 연구의 중요한 축을 이룰 것으로 보이며, 웰빙에 대한 고객의 기대로는 건강에 대한 관심과 함께 상품에 대한 안심감, 신뢰성, 윤리성이 우선되어야 할 것이다. 따라서 화장품 영역에서의 웰빙 관련 연구로는 지방 분해, 비타민, 폴리페놀, 오가닉과 함께 항노화에 관련된 체계적인 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이며 아울러 피부과학과 감성 공학을 바탕으로 효능증대, 피부흡수제어, 피부적합성, 제형 및 활성성분안정화, 지속성 증진, 신원료개발이 중요할 것이며, 특히 최근의 바이오 기술. 나노기술. 천연소재기술은 웰빙상품 개발의 초석이라 하겠다.

  • In recent years, machine learning algorithms are continuously being used and expanded in various fields, such as facial recognition, signal processing, personal authentication, and stock prediction. In particular, various algorithms, such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and Q-learning, are continuously being improved. Among these algorithms, the expansion of deep learning is rapidly changing. Nevertheless, machine learning algorithms have not yet been applied in several fields, such as personal authentication technology. This technology is an essential tool in the digital information era, walking recognition technology as promising biometrics, and technology for solving state-space problems. Therefore, algorithm technologies of deep learning, reinforcement learning, and Q-learning, which are typical machine learning algorithms in various fields, such as agricultural technology, personal authentication, wireless network, game, biometric recognition, and image recognition, are being improved and expanded in this paper.

  • The use of probiotics for human and animal health is continuously increasing. The probiotics used in humans commonly come from dairy foods, whereas the sources of probiotics used in animals are often the animals' own digestive tracts. Increasingly, probiotics from sources other than milk products are being selected for use in people who are lactose intolerant. These sources are non-dairy fermented foods and beverages, non-dairy and non-fermented foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, feces of breast-fed infants and human breast milk. The probiotics that are used in both humans and animals are selected in stages; after the initial isolation of the appropriate culture medium, the probiotics must meet important qualifications, including being non-pathogenic acid and bile-tolerant strains that possess the ability to act against pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract and the safety-enhancing property of not being able to transfer any antibiotic resistance genes to other bacteria. The final stages of selection involve the accurate identification of the probiotic species.

  • General trend in electronics industry towards multimedia in the 21 century is presented here. All equipments require fast graphic processing together with thin and lightweight assembly technology. In Japan, CSP was developed and applied to mobile equipments for several years, and recently stacked die assembly technology is being developed. In addition, so-called flip chip technology is also being developed and which is applied to MCP and MCM little by little these days.
