  • This study identifies the commercialization success factors that can be an important indicator for the transfer and commercialization of national R&D results in the agricultural sector. Unlike other industries, the agricultural sector has a non-systematically scaled and processed industrial structure, and R&D is led by government rather than the private sector. Although the quantitative performance of national agricultural R&D, especially the number of patents and publications, has increased rapidly with the quantitative expansion of the government R&D budget, the technology commercialization of the results of agricultural R&D has been accompanied by difficulties for SMEs. Therefore, this study summarized the success factors for commercialization of state-owned technologies presented in previous studies, and based on them, analysed the success factors for commercialization specific to the agricultural sector. It also conducted a questionnaire survey using Delphi and focus group interviews (FGI) with experts from academia, research and industry, and a survey of agricultural companies to derive success factors for commercialization in the agricultural sector using logistic regression analysis. As a result, five indicators with positive correlation and three indicators with negative correlation within technology characteristics, suppliers, adopters, policy and market factors were finally derived as key factors for agricultural commercialization. In the future, it is expected that independent factor analysis of the food and seed sectors, which have independent industry characteristics from the agricultural sector, will be needed.

  • This study intends to analyze the impact of technology commercialization activities in the area of basic research on the technology utilization performances and the corporate business performances. The technology commercialization activities are divided into the experiences of promoting technology commercialization, the department dedicated to technology commercialization, and the technology commercialization consulting. Additionally, this study has used the tracked information of the companies that adopted the basic research-related technologies. Therefore, we conducted the analysis on the mediating effects under the assumption that it can be extended to the business performance of companies in addition to technology utilization performance. To do this, we developed the empirical model through previous studies and developed various research models by subdividing the types of technology commercialization. As the result, it was analyzed that all the variables of activities involved in the technology commercialization utilizing basic research results had positive effects on the technology utilization performance and business performances, and there were also mediating effects on the technology-related performance.

Second, verified the regulation effect of social support from the cause-and-effect relationship between motivation of technology transfer commercialization and the said internal factors. In order to analyze the above research, a questionnaire survey was conducted for the professors and employees engaged in the technology transfer and commercialization organization of 40 universities in Korea. A total of 160 surveys were distributed, of which 145 were collected. The results of analysis using SPSS Statistics 22.0 are as follows. First, all internal factors of university such as evaluation system, education support program, and human resources have significant influence on the motivation for technology transfer and commercialization. Second, as a result of analyzing the regulation effect of the social support in relation to the internal factor of the university and the motivation of technology transfer and commercialization, the quasi regulation effect can be founded in between evaluation system and motivation of technology transfer and commercialization. However, there is no regulation effect of social support between the education support program, human resources and motivation for technology transfer and commercialization. Based on the results of this study, suggestions can be founded for establishing a support policy for those who are engaged in technology transfer and commercialization in universities.

  • We have analyzed technology transfer and commercialization process and factors affecting the outcomes of technology commercialization of public research institutes in Korea. A technology commercialization process model was presented as an input, intermediate outcomes/capabilities, output (outcome) structure using the structural equation model. Input variables include R&D input, technology commercialization strategy/support, collaboration, social capital. The model also includes R&D capabilities and technology commercialization performance as intermediate variable and output variable respectively. The technology commercialization performance was measured as the number of technology transfer and spin-off. We conducted survey and 88 institutes responded. Empirical results show that R&D input influence R&D capabilities and R&D capabilities influence the output of technology transfer and commercialization. Collaboration activities and social capital also appear to have a positive effect on the output. However, the effect of strategy and support on the output appear to be not statistically significant.
