  • The objective of the study is to examine the relationship between water resources, energy demand, food production, and environmental pollutants in selected SAARC nations, namely, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, during the period of 1990-2016. The results show that water, energy, and food (WEF) resources substantially affected air quality in the form of high mass carbon emissions, fossil fuel energy demand, methane discharges, nitrous oxide emissions, and greenhouse gas emissions in these countries. Food production and food deficit largely increase $CO_2$ emissions due to unsustainable production and malnutrition, while land use under cereal production increases $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ emissions. Electricity production escalates $CO_2$ emissions and fossil emissions across countries. The results support the carbon EKC hypothesis, while monotonic increasing function exists in case of fossil fuel energy. The study emphasizes the need to ensure environmental sustainability agenda by adopting cleaner production technologies in WEF resources.

  • This paper explores how international political factors influence the role of conventional external factors in the course of technological learning. The research goes on to investigate whether the role of the techno-economic factors has changed due to the involvement of international political factors in the technological learning mechanism. To this end, this paper examines how US political intervention affected Korean technological learning in the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle. The export policy, prior consent policy and international political influence of the US are employed as international political factors. The empirical findings show that international political factors are very likely to restrain the impact of the techno-economic factors on technological learning process. Accordingly, this paper hypothesizes that the role of techno-economic factors in the technological learning mechanism is weaker when international political intervention is involved.

  • In this paper a bridge flutter prediction is performed by using advanced numerical simulation. Two novel approaches were developed simultaneously by utilizing the ANSYS v12.1 commercial software package. The first one is a fluid-structure interaction simulation involving the three-dimensional elastic motion of a bridge deck and the fluid flow around it. The second one is an updated forced oscillation technique based on the dynamic mode shapes of the bridge. An aeroelastic wind tunnel model was constructed in order to validate the numerical results. Good agreement between the numerical results and the measurements proves the applicability of the novel methods in bridge flutter assessment.

  • The integration of nanoparticles into various industries has spurred interest in understanding their impact on logistics and transportation systems. In this study, we investigate the effect of nanoparticles on the economic aspects of railway logistics transport using a mathematical model. By incorporating factors such as transportation costs, time efficiency, and environmental considerations, we aim to assess the overall economic feasibility of integrating nanoparticles into railway logistics operations. Through mathematical modeling and analysis, we explore how the introduction of nanoparticles affects cost-benefit analyses, resource allocation, and decision-making processes within railway logistics. Our findings provide valuable insights into the economic implications of nanoparticle integration in railway transport, offering potential strategies for optimizing logistics operations and enhancing overall efficiency and sustainability.

  • Despite of the impressive progress made in the Evolutionary techno-economics during the last two decades, there have been very little, if not at all, theoretical advancement in explaining an endogenous mechanism of transforming a technological paradigm within self-perpetuatingstructural dynamics. The question poorly attempted was raised by Schumpeter a century ago in his effort to overcome the well-known 'Walras' trap'. Although there have been increasing number of researchers recently tackling the issue quite seriously from within the Evolutionary school, I see it that radical reconstruction of the basic principle of Evolutionary research framework is urgently needed to solve the century long fundamental question, from evolutionary approach to transformational approach. In the paper, I will show the theoretical feasibility of explaining an endogenous mechanism of paradigm transformation, relying upon the concept of localized dynamics and the concept of morphogenetic structuration. It should be emphasized that there must be aendogenous process of deepening structural Instability generated in the process of economic coordination to secure efficient circular flow. The concept of development bottleneck initiated by the Baumol's cost disease could be regarded as one of the important source of such mechanism. Unfortunately, however, it is a brief conceptual description presented in the paper rather than a comprehensive analytical model, due to the space limitation imposed.

  • Torrefaction technologies convert assorted biomass feedstocks into energy-concentrated, carbon neutral fuel that is economically transported and easily ground for blending with fossil coals at numerous power plants around the world without needs to retrofit. Utilization of torrefied biomass in conventional electric generating units may be an increasingly attractive alternative for electricity generation as aging power plants in the world need to be upgraded or improved. This paper examines the economic feasibility of torrefaction in different scenarios by modeling torrefaction plants producing 136,078 t/year (150,000 ton/year) biocoal from wood and corn stover. The utilization of biocoal blends in existing coal-fired power plants is modeled to determine the demand for this fuel in the context of emerging policies regulating emissions from coal in the U.S. setting. Opportunities to co-locate torrefaction facilities adjacent to corn ethanol plants and coal-fired power plants are explored as means to improve economics for collaborating businesses. Life cycle analysis was conducted in parallel to this economic study and was used to determine environmental impacts of converting biomass to biocoal for blending in coal-fired power plants as well as the use of substantial flows of off-gasses produced in the torrefaction process. Sensitivity analysis of the financial rates of return of the different businesses has been performed to measure impacts of different factors, whether input prices, output prices, or policy measures that render costs or rewards for the businesses.

  • Due to fossil fuel depletion and environmental pollution, H2 production from organic waste has received an increased attention. In this study, we present an integrated process for the H2 production from biogas and evaluate the economic feasibility and sustainability via rigorous techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA). Through the TEA, we determine the minimum H2 selling price using discounted cash flow analysis and investigate the main cost drivers. The environmental impact of the proposed process is quantified via LCA.

  • Prior to modern seismic provisions, several bridges were not designed for seismic actions in moderate seismic areas. Precast multi-girder and slab bridges are typical highway overpass structures; they have a significant contribution to national bridge stocks. Since the seismic behavior is questionable, a preliminary parametric study is conducted to determine critical configurations and components. The results indicate that the behavior of the abutments, backfill soil, superstructure and foundation is normally satisfactory; however, the superstructure-abutment joints are critical for both single- and multi-span bridges, while the piers are also critical for longer multi-span configurations. The parametric results provide a solid basis both for detailed seismic assessment and development of design concepts of newly built structures in moderate seismic zones.

  • In this paper an experimental study is performed on end-plate type joints. The test arrangement represents a column-base joint of a steel frame. Altogether six specimens were tested, each of them subjected to cyclic loading. The specimens were carefully designed by performing detailed preliminary calculations so that they would present typical behaviour types of end-plate joints. On the basis of the experimentally established moment-rotation relationship, the cyclic characteristics of each specimen have been calculated and compared to one another. The results are evaluated, qualitative and quantitative conclusions are drawn.
