The aim of the study was to investigate the diameter and base curve changes of soft contact lens by protein deposition. Soft contact lenses were soaked in artificial tear or protein solution which had the same composition with tear for 2min, 10min, 30min, 1hr, 3hr, 6hr, 12hr, and 24hr. Diameter and base curve changes of soft contact lenses were examined by using the high speed camera(Fastcam ultima 1024). The longer the soaking time of soft contact lenses in the artificial tear, the diameter and base curve changes of soft contact lenses was more increased. In the case of soft contact lenses adsorbed only protein, the similar pattern was shown and the diameter and base curve were decreased. However, the influence of calcium ion was found to be less than that of protein. These results suggest that the tear protein causes the diameter and base curve decrease of soft contact lens, which might be related to the discomfort after soft contact lens wearing.
Background: In rotator cuff repair, the long head of the biceps tendon (LHB) is commonly used as graft material. However, factors influencing LHB tear severity are poorly understood, and predicting grade II LHB tears is challenging. This study aimed to identify these factors preoperatively. Methods: The demographics, medical parameters, and pain severity of 750 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery from January 2010 to February 2021 were evaluated to determine the factors associated with LHB tear severity and grade II tears. Both overall and large-to-massive rotator cuff tear (RCT) cohorts underwent ordinal and binary logistic regression analyses. Predictive accuracy for grade II LHB tears was determined using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: In the overall cohort, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) >1 mg/L (P<0.001), subscapularis tear (P<0.001), hypothyroidism (P=0.031), and the tangent sign (P=0.003) were significantly associated with LHB tear severity, and hs-CRP>1 mg/L, subscapularis tear, and Patte retraction degree were significantly associated with grade II LHB tears (P<0.001). In the large-to-massive RCT cohort, hs-CRP>1 mg/L, hypertension, and age ≥50 years (P<0.05) were significantly associated with LHB tear severity, and hs-CRP>1 mg/L (P<0.001) and hypertension (P=0.026) were significantly associated with grade II LHB tears. In both cohorts, hs-CRP >1 mg/L demonstrated good predictive accuracy for grade II LHB tears (AUCs: 0.72 and 0.70). Conclusions: Serum hs-CRP >1 mg/L is associated with LHB tear severity and serves as a reliable predictor of grade II LHB tears, facilitating preoperative assessment of the LHB as potential graft material in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. serves as a reliable predictor of grade II LHB tears, facilitating preoperative assessment of the LHB as potential graft material in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Purpose: The study was aimed to figure out the effect of materials and pigmentation of soft contact lens on the adherence of Staphylococcus aureus upon soft contact lenses deposited with tear components. Methods: The number of adherent S. aureus on clear and circle soft contact lenses made of etafilcon A, hilafilcon B, nelfilcon A was measured before and after incubation in artificial tear. Furthermore, the denaturalization level of tear protein with time after incubation in artificial tear was estimated by electrophoresis. Results: The adherence of S. aureus was significantly different according to the lens materials. The pattern of bacterial adherence on clear and circle contact lenses was different. That is, the adherent amount of S. aureus was somewhat larger on circle lens made of etafilcon A however, amount on circle lenses made of hilafilcon B and nelfilcon A was 89.3% and 71.3% of the number on clear lenses. When the tear protein was deposited on contact lenses, the number of adherent bacteria decreased and its degree was varied according to the lens material. The degree of decrease was the biggest in clear soft lens made of etafilcon A. Anti-bacterial effect of tear protein decreased with time after deposition of tear protein on soft contact lens and the amount of lysozyme also decreased. The reduction of anti-bacterial effect and quantity of lysozyme was different according to contact lens materials and pigmentation. Conclusions: It was revealed that the adherence of S. aureus depends on contact lens materials and pigmentation, and the specification of lens material affects more on adherence of S.aureus than pigmentation. It was further figured out the denaturalization level of anti-bacterial protein on soft contact lens varies according to lens materials and pigmentation, which produces an effect on the quantity of bacterial adherence.

Purpose: The present study was conducted to investigate whether refractive powers of soft contact lenses were induced by the deposition of tear proteins when wearing soft contact lenses. Methods: The soft contact lenses (material: etafilcon A, hilafilcon A and comfilcon A) with refractive powers of -1.00 D, -3.00 D, -5.00 D and -7.00 D were incubated in artificial tear for 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days and 14 days, respectively. After incubation, their refractive powers were measured by wet cell method with an auto-lens meter and their protein deposited on the lenses was determined by the method of Lowry. Results: Among three types of soft contact lenses, the most protein deposition was detected in ionic etafilcon A lens material and significant change of its refractive power was manifested. In other words, refractive powers of etafilcon A lenses firstly decreased after 1 day incubation in artificial tear and then gradually increased with increasing incubation period again. The observed change in refractive powers of all diopters of etafilcon A material was beyond the scope of standard error and bigger in the lens with lower optical power. On the other hand, non-ionic hilafilcon A showed less protein deposition as much as about 20% in etafilacon A and statistically significant increase of refractive powers with increasing incubation period in artificial tear. The change in refractive power of hilafilcon A was also beyond the scope of the standard of error when incubating in artificial tear and greater in the lens with lower diopter. The least protein deposit was shown in silicone hydrogel lens material, comfilcon A as approximately 10% of it in etafilcon A, indicating less change in refractive power within the standard range of error. Conclusions: The large change of refractive powers that was beyond the scope of standard error by the deposition of tear proteins on soft contact lenses was differently detected depending on lens materials in the current study. Thus, the deposition of tear proteins induced by longer period of lens wearing may be one of the causes that induces blurred vision, suggesting that soft contact lens wearers with the amount of tear proteins may need to choose proper lens material.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cause of discomfort come from wearing of soft contact lens(SCL) exposed to fundamental cosmetics, After SCLs were smeared with skin lotion, essence lotion or nutritional cream, they were exposed to artificial tear for 7 days, and then changes of the adhered protein amount, the transmission of visible light, the wettability and the base curve were estimated. The amount of protein adhered to SCLs were increased 3 times by being exposed to fundamental cosmetics. Moreover, the transmission of visible light of SCL exposed to both nutritional cream and artificial tear was 92.8%, which was 4.7% lower than SCL exposed only to artificial tear. By being exposed to skin lotion, essence lotion or nutritional cream, the contact angle of SCLs were increased up to $7.1^{\circ}$, $7.0^{\circ}$ or $5.7^{\circ}$ and the base curve of SCLs were decreased to 3.2%, 5.1% or 8.3%, respectively.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to figure out how the characteristics of soft contact lens materials and pigmentation affect the adherence of C. albicans on soft contact lenses pre-deposited with tear constituents. Methods: The adherent number of C. albicans on clear soft contact lenses (hereinafter clear lenses) and circle soft contact lenses (hereinafter circle lenses) made of etafilcon A, hilaiflcon B and nelfilcon A, respectively, was measured before and after the deposition of artificial tear. Also, bacteria adherence on lenses were observed by a scanning electron microscope. Results: Adherence of C. albicans was significantly different according to lens materials. The amount of adsorption was not different between clear lenses and circle lenses made of etafilcon A however, the number of bacteria absorption was bigger in hilafilcon B and nelfilcon A lenses. More absorption of C. albicans was found in the non-pigmented central area compared the pigmented area, and non-pigmented peripheral area has more bacterial absorption than non-pigmented central area. The number of C. albicans decreased in the case that tear protein was pre-deposited. The maintenance of antibacterial activity against C. albicans was different according to lens materials thus, etafilcon A has the longest period of its maintenance. Conclusions: It was revealed that the number of C. albicans was different according to the characteristics of lens materials, pigmentation or non-pigmentation, the pigmented area of soft contact lenses. Thus, it is suggested that the management method should be different according to the adsorption characteristics of C. albicans.
Purpose: The present study was aimed to compare the difference in adherence level of microorganisms according to contact lens materials and protein deposition and to evaluate disinfection efficacy of multipurpose solution. Methods: The evaluations of micro-organisms' adherence and disinfection efficacy of multi-purpose solution were conducted by employing the Part 2. Regimen Procedure for Disinfecting Regiments in the Disinfection Efficacy Testing under the "FDA Evaluation Criteria & Method". Results: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Candida albicans except Staphylococcus aureus adhered more on etafilcon A lens and disinfection efficacy of total 4 products investigated was almost perfect except Candida albicans. The 3 micro-organisms except Serratia marcescens adhered more to albumin-predeposited lens. Disinfection efficacy of multi-purpose solution was higher against the micro-organisms adhered to albumin-deposited lens than against the micro-organisms adhered to the lysozyme-deposited lens. Furthermore, disinfection efficacy of multi-purpose solution was different according to types of micro-organisms. Conclusions: It was revealed that the type of micro-organisms, the lens materials and type of absorbed tear protein affected the amount of adhered micro-organisms to contact lens and that adhesion of tear protein could induce the change of disinfection efficacy of multi-purpose solution. It suggest that the hygienic condition of contact lens can vary by these factors influencing on disinfection efficacy and the occurrence of adverse effect can be affected.
Protein adsorption kinetics was studied with the amount of proteins adsorbed to contact lens hydrogels over time scales. Hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and silicone hydrogels were dipped in protein solutions (albumin or IgG) and adsorption amounts were measured over time scales. The amount of protein adsorbed to both hydrogel types increased rapidly in 10 min, and remained consistently in 90 min. Decreasing interfacial energetics was taken slowly up to an hour in spite of rapid diffusion of protein molecules. This is due to the fact that water deprivation from three dimensional interphase initially formed by protein diffusion took over an hour. Interpretation of adsorption kinetics on contact lens hydrogels was discussed with understanding of relationship between surface energy and protein adsorption capacity.

Purpose: The present study was aimed to investigate the cleaning efficacy of multi-purpose solutions containing different types and content of surfactants and their effect on the visible light transmittance of soft lens. Methods: Soft lenses made of different materials (etafilcon A and hilafilcon B) were deposited tear proteins by using the artificial tear and then compared the resulting cleaning efficacy and visible light transmittance after cleaning the lens with 6 types of multi-purpose solutions containing different content of surfactants. Results: The cleaning efficacy of multi-purpose solutions was variously shown as approximately 23~43% according to the active concentration of surfactants and surface tension in multi-purpose solution when etafilcon A lens cleaned with rubbing. The highest cleaning efficacy was detected when cleaned with the multi-purpose solution containing hydrogen peroxide besides surfactant however, the amount of remaining protein was still high on the lens. After washed with multi-purpose solution, the visible light transmittance of lens was in 89.8 to 90.8%. The amount of protein deposited on hilafilcon B lens was very small compared with it on etafilcon A lens even though it was incubated in artificial tears for 7 days, which showed 5~10% of protein amount in etafilcon A lens and the decrease of visible light transmittance was also not significant. In case of rubbing with multi-purpose solution, the cleaning efficacy on hilafilcon B lens was in 45.4 to 67.4% however, the order of cleaning efficacy of multi-purpose solution was different from it on etafilcon A lens. The visible light transmittance of hilafilcon B lens has been restored to the level of new lens. Conclusions: From the result, it is concluded that the appropriate multi-purpose solution should be selected according to the lens material and the amount of protein deposit on the basis of understanding surfactants and active principle for proper care of protein deposit on soft lens and the cleaning with rubbing is more efficient for lens care regardless of manufacturer's guideline.

As FK506 binding proteins (FK506BPs) are known to play an important role in the regulation of a variety of biological processes related to cell survival, this study was designed to examined the protective effects of FK506 binding protein 12 (FK506BP) on low humidity air flow induced dry eye in a rat model using transduced PEP-1-FK506BP. After the topical application of PEP-1-FK506BP, tear volumes were markedly increased and significant prevention of cornea damage was observed compared with dry eye rats. Further, immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that PEP-1-FK506BP markedly prevented damage to the cornea, the bulbar conjunctiva, and the palpebral conjunctiva epithelial lining compared with dry eye rats. In addition, caspase-3 and PARP expression levels were found to be decreased. These results demonstrated that topical application of PEP-1-FK506BP significantly ameliorates dry eye injury in an animal model. Thus, we suggest that PEP-1-FK506BP can be developed as a new ophthalmic drop to treat dry eye diseases.
