  • The purpose of this study is to identify the difference in learning styles, learning stages, and preferred nursing specialties between two groups of nursing programs, regular BSN and RN-BSN. The survey instrument was a simplified version of the Kolb's Learning-Style Instrument which was developed by the researcher, a self- reported learning style questionnaire with twelve questions related to the four learning stages. The sample of the study was the 218 nursing students in a university in Korea which consisted of 58 junior and 67 senior students in the regular BSN program, and 58 junior and 35 senior students in the RN-BSN program. Main findings of the study were as the following. 1) Over all, the major learning style was either the diverger or the accomodator; the most preferred learning stage was the concrete experience and the leastly preferred learning stage was the abstractive conceptualization learning stage; and the most preferred nursing specialty in the future was the clinical nursing. 2) Students in the BSN program preferred four learning stages with rather equal proportion, whereas the students in the RN-BSN program preferred the concrete experience learning stage as high as 60.3% and the abstractive conceptualization learning stage as low as 9.5%. 3)For the future career, the junior students of both programs preferred clinical and educational nursing areas, and the senior students of both programs preferred clinical and research areas. The main reason of the difference seemed to result from the different courses such as Health Education or Teaching Method for the juniors and the Nursing Research for the seniors of both groups. Because the sample of the study was limited to a university, it is difficult to generalize the study results for the entire nursing students in Korea. Continuous studies with larger numbers of nursing students and nurse educators, and experimental studies measuring the effects of new curricula are needed for the future.

  • this study, the teaching methods of three science teachers for lead-iodide precipitation reaction experiment were compared. The difference of 9th grade students' understanding was searched according to the science teachers teaching styles, also. Among the three teachers, Teacher A taught students based on the science textbook and allowed students to think themselves and to get out conclusion by the experiment. Teacher B and Teacher C gave students a lot of explanations related to interpretation of the experiment. The percentage of no response on the experiment report of Teacher A was higher than those of Teacher B and Teacher C. But the students of Teacher B and Teacher C tended to have limited thoughts because of the teachers explanations. In spite of the difference, it was common phenomenon that few students understood concepts through the experiment. A lot of students were interested in the experiment, but it was hard to understand Law of definite proportions according to the experiment.

  • Together with the development of ubiquitous computing technology and robot technology, intelligent type robots are being utilized in many areas and the range is expected to become wider and wider. Among many service robots, the educational robots are being diversely studied in the field with the concept of r-Learning. Presently, teaching assistant robots require a lot of HRI studies prior to their practical use in the very near future and are not sufficient yet. Especially, the reactions of students based of the styles of robots (e.g. serious robot, playful robot) are very important in producing robot contents but there has been no case study on them. Therefore, in this study, the appearance of the IROBI was changed to become a teaching assistant robot and was used to test and compare elementary school students' interest, achievement and concentration depending on the styles of robot (playful, serious). The results showed that the interest was high in the group that had studied with the playful robot. The achievement however, did not show significant relations with the style of robot and that the concentration was high in the group that had studied with the serious robot.

  • Kim(2011) showed that the team-based teaching method which is focusing on the individual job assignment solves the backlash effects of peer-evaluation method and suggested that it should be studied if the job assignment teaching method does not worsen the learning outcomes[1]. To analyse the learning outcomes of the job assignment teaching method is the purpose of this paper. This paper evaluates the improvement of the learning outcomes which are resulted from a variance of education style that each member of project team was given his specific task. Firstly, all the students evaluate a learning satisfaction and quality of outcomes by themselves. Secondly, an instructor and some professionals evaluate all the outputs. The results showed that the learning outcomes evaluated by students and instructors are improved significantly. The suggested method in this paper, which focuses on the job assignment of team project, could improve the learning outcomes of team project in engineering education.

  • Computational thinking with programming skills has been widely emphasized for future industrial engineering researchers and practitioners in Industry 4.0. However, industrial engineering students still have limited opportunities to improve their computational thinking abilities during university coursework. In this regard, this research study proposes to use Python programming language for teaching classical Industrial Engineering subjects. For a specific case study, we designed and instructed an Engineering Economy lecture which cultivates the concept and techniques of economic analysis for engineering students. During the class, we introduced the usage of several Python libraries that include numpy-financial for basic financial functions, numpy and scipy for simple numerical computation and analysis, and matplotlib for data visualization. Anonymous class evaluation survey showed the effectiveness of the proposed teaching method in terms of both educational satisfaction and contents delivery. Finally, we found additional needs for providing lectures that adopt the similar teaching style to the proposed method.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptual learning style preferences of 97 Korean EFL students in middle school. Furthermore, it examined if students' learning styles varied in terms of gender and grade level. Data was collected by using Reid's (1987) PLSPQ and a personal background questionnaire and was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, MANOVA, ANOVA, and t-test. The results revealed that subjects had all six major learning styles but among them, auditory, group, and visual styles were the most preferred by them. The results found in this study, presented that Korean EFL middle school students favored learning English through listening, reading and working in groups and that younger students preferred learning through physical involvement and practicum. The findings of this study provide a number of useful insights for EFL and ESL educators and instructors in Korea. The current study suggests that a great number of variables such as culture, learning situation of the target country, age, and grade level can all play important roles in shaping the learning preferences and the learning styles of students. Considering these variables and promoting a curriculum that is interesting, appealing and successful may help maximize student L2 learning.

  • The purpose of this study investigate the differences in children's reading abilities of environmental print according to children's age and types of parental literacy interaction. The subjects comprised 111 illiterate children, 3 to 4 years of age, and their mothers. The Children's Reading Abilities of Environmental Print Scale (CRAEPS), Parent's Literacy Interaction Rating Scale (PLIRS) as developed by Son (2012) were used in this study. The collected data are analyzed by means of descriptive analysis, K-mean cluster analysis, Correlations, and two-way ANOVA. The results of this study are as follows : Illiterate Korean children, aged 3 to 4 years, can read environmental print which are familiar to them, and an 'open interaction style' plays an important role in developing the child's reading ability of environmental print. Therefore, in order to develop child literacy, it is necessary to research, not only teaching methods for using environmental print in the home, child care centers, and in kindergarten, but also parent education programs regarding the importance of the mother's literacy interaction style.

  • With the trend of globalization more people are absorbing in the English learning programs. Not a few attend even the English-Korean translation training course to be semi-professional translators, but we English teachers have already experienced that it is not so easy to translate any language into another, and that it is far more difficult to translate poetry. Much time has been devoted to investigating the problems of translating poetry than any other mode. Poetry translation theory is concerned with the problem of faithfulness to the original poetry. To be a good translator we must fully understand the sound and sense of the original work. But when in translating English poetry into Korean we feel keenly our limits of understanding the sound and style of English poetry, and of expressing them into Korean. Even our sense-oriented translation is far from satisfactory. We often make quite a few mistranslation. Another immediate problem is that of alternation between word-for-word translation and free translation method, but first of all, we should have a perfect knowledge and understanding in English, and a good command of our mother tongue. We should also have a sound interpretation ability because poetry translation is based on the interpretation of the original, and on the shaping of that interpretation. Some doubts have been raised over the feasibility of poetry translation. They say it is not possible to combine in another language the emotion, the form, the style, the musical devices of English poetry. Yet the art of translation has been practiced everywhere in the world. Through this art we can share our experience and culture with foreigners and theirs with us.
