  • Series expansion methods to compute the exponential of a matrix have been compared by applying them to fuel depletion calculations. Specifically, Taylor, Pade, Chebyshev, and rational Chebyshev approximations have been investigated by approximating the exponentials of bum matrices by truncated series of each method with the scaling and squaring algorithm. The accuracy and efficiency of these methods have been tested by performing various numerical tests using one thermal reactor and two fast reactor depletion problems. The results indicate that all the four series methods are accurate enough to be used for fuel depletion calculations although the rational Chebyshev approximation is relatively less accurate. They also show that the rational approximations are more efficient than the polynomial approximations. Considering the computational accuracy and efficiency, the Pade approximation appears to be better than the other methods. Its accuracy is better than the rational Chebyshev approximation, while being comparable to the polynomial approximations. On the other hand, its efficiency is better than the polynomial approximations and is similar to the rational Chebyshev approximation. In particular, for fast reactor depletion calculations, it is faster than the polynomial approximations by a factor of ∼ 1.7.

  • This paper presents a study on the safety assessment of human body for electromagnetic field at unbalanced power system. The 3-phase load flow algorithm uses Newton-Raphson method based on Taylor series expansion of power flow equations in rectangular coordinates. The use of such a method can result in a solution with good convergence characteristics. In the safety assessment of human body, the approach based on fuzzy linguistic variable is employed to overcome the shortcomings resulting from a crisp set concept. The suggested scheme is applied to a 24bus system to validate the usefulness. The results for an unbalanced power system are compared with the results for a balanced power system.

  • A mathematical modeling for a magnetic levitation system is proposed using the Taylor series expansion of differential function for obtaining linearity. It is confirmed that this kind of linear approximation method can be used to the modeling of a magnetic levitation system. The two-degree-of-freedom optimal servo system for a constant reference signal is proposed using the LQ optimization technique. An additional state feedback is introduced at the output of the integrator to cancel the integral action for reference signal if there is no modeling error of the plant and no disturbance input to the plant. When the modeling error or the disturbance input exists, the integral effect appears. The system has a free parameter which can b used to tune the effect of the integral compensation.

  • A cubic spline trajectory planner with arc-length parameter is formulated with estimation by summing up to the 3rd order in Taylor's expansion. The PVAJT motion planning is presented to reduce trajectory calculation time at every cycle time of servo control loop so that it is able to generate cubic spline trajectory in real time. This method can be used to more complex spline trajectory. Several case studies are executed with different values of cycle time and sampling time, and showed the advantages of the PVAJT motion planner. A DSP-based motion controller is designed to implement the PVAJT motion planning.

  • In this paper new implicit time integration called N-IHOA is presented for dynamic analysis of high damping systems. Here, current displacement and velocity are assumed to be functions of the velocities and accelerations of several previous time steps, respectively. This definition causes that only one set of weighted factors is calculated from the Taylor series expansion which leads to a simple approach and reduce the computational efforts. Moreover a comprehensive study on stability of the proposed method i.e., N-IHOA compared with IHOA integration which is performed based on amplification matrices proves the ability of the N-IHOA in high damping vibrations such as control systems. Also, wide range of numerical examples which contains single/multi degrees of freedom, damped/un-damped, free/forced vibrations from finite element/finite difference demonstrate that the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed time integration is more than the common approaches such as the IHOA, the Wilson-${\theta}$ and the Newmark-${\beta}$.

  • In this paper Timoshenko beam theory is employed to investigate the vibration characteristics of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) Beams with a stiff core in thermal environment. The material characteristic of carbon nanotubes (CNT) are supposed to change in the thickness direction in a functionally graded form. They can also be calculated through a micromechanical model where the CNT efficiency parameter is determined by matching the elastic modulus of CNTRCs calculated from the rule of mixture with those gained from the molecular dynamics simulations. The differential transform method (DTM) which is established upon the Taylor series expansion is one of the effective mathematical techniques employed to the differential governing equations of sandwich beams. Effects of carbon nanotube volume fraction, slenderness ratio, core-to-face sheet thickness ratio, different thermal environment and various boundary conditions on the free vibration characteristics of FG-CNTRC sandwich beams are studied. It is observed that vibration response of FG-CNTRC sandwich beams is prominently influenced by these parameters.

  • In this paper we study bounds for characteristics of stationary waiting times in (max, +)-linear systems with a Poisson arrival process. which are prevalent in manufacturing systems, kanban systems, cyclic and acyclic fork-and-join type systems, finite or infinite capacity tandem queues with various kinds of blocking, transportation systems, and telecommunication networks, and so on. Recently, some results on series expansion for characteristics, such as higher moments, Laplace transform, and tail probability, of transient and stationary waiting times in a class of (max, +)-linear systems via Taylor series expansions have been studied. In order to overcome the computational complexity in those results, we consider bounds for characteristics of stationary waiting times using valuable stochastic ordering results. Some numerical examples are also provided.

  • We investigated the mean and variance of the MSE and the MI-based image registration methods that have been widely applied for image registration. By using the first order Taylor series expansion, we have approximated the mean and the variance for one-dimensional image registration. The asymptotic results show that the MSE based method is unbiased and efficient for the same image registration problem while the MI-based method shows larger variance. However, for the different modality image registration problem, the MSE based method is largely biased while the MI based method still achieves registration. The results imply that the MI based method achieves robustness to the different image modalities at the cost of inefficiency. The analytical results are supported by simulation results.

  • A method of width adaptation in the radial basis function network (RBFN) using stochastic gradient (SG) algorithm is introduced. Using Taylor's expansion of error signal and differentiating the error with respect to the step-size, the optimal time-varying step-size of the width in RBFN is derived. The proposed approach to adjusting widths in RBFN achieves superior learning speed and the steady-state mean square error (MSE) performance in nonlinear channel environment. The proposed method has shown enhanced steady-state MSE performance by more than 3 dB in both nonlinear channel environments. The results confirm that controlling over step-size of the width in RBFN by the proposed algorithm can be an effective approach to enhancement of convergence speed and the steady-state value of MSE.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a new nonlinear feedback control called AACC (Augmented automatic choosing control) for nonlinear systems. Generally, it is easy to design the optimal control laws for linear systems, but it is not so for nonlinear systems, though they have been studied for many years. One of most popular and practical nonlinear control laws is synthesized by applying a linearization method by Taylor expansion truncated at the first order and the linear optimal control method. This is only effective in a small region around the steady state point or in almost linear systems. Controllers based on a change of coordinates in differential geometry are effective in wider...
