  • A taxonomic study on three families of Plecoptera in Korea was performed with adults, nymphs and eggs. As a result, the identified species were eight species , eight genera. Among them, three species, Perlodes stigmata n.sp., Kamimura coreana n. sp. and Neoperla coreensis n.sp ., are described as new in this paper.

Taxonomic Implication of the Stellate Trichomes to Genus Deutzia Subsection Coreanae in Korea (한국산 말발도리속, 매화말발도리아절 식물에 대한 성모형태의 분류학적 적용)

  • To reexamine the taxonomic characters of Deutzia coreana, D. tozawae, and D. triradiata, which were belonged to Subsection Coreanae of genus deutzia in Korea, the stellate trichome in the leaf, one of the major diagnostic characters, was investigated with the stereo and scanning electron microscopes. The number of trichome was nearly equal in both sides of the leaf, while the ray was mainly 4 and 5 in D. coreana. However, there was little trichomes in the upper surface of D. tozawae, and in the lower surface of D. triradiata. D. tozawae had 3, 4-rayed trichomes in leaf surfaces, and D. triradiata 3-rayed ones, respectively. As a result, these three species were also distinguishable by the stellate trichomes in the leaf.

Molecular Epidemiology of Listeria monocytogenes by Ribotyping

  • Ten Listeria monocytogenes were isolated from clinical specimens and mussels, and their physio-biochemical characters were compared with the type strains. Ribotyping was used as a taxonomic tool to determine molecular epidemiological marker. Chromosomal DNA was cleaved with restriction enzymes HindIII and EcoRI. The fragment were subjected to Southern blot hybridization with 165 rDNA from B. subtilis by PCR. EcoRI patterns of Listeria strains showed 6 to 8 bands ranging from 0.75 kb to 11 kb band and they were classified into 6 groups. In comparison, HindIII patterns revealed that 5 to 7 bands ranging from 2.75 kb to 7.75 kb band and they classified into 5 groups. The various patterns of Listeria strains were observed within genus, species and isolated sources. 165 rRNA gene restriction patterns (ribotyping) are useful in epidemiological and taxonomic study.

  • A taxonomic review of the fungivorous tetratomid beetles in Korea, which comprises four species belonging to two genera of two subfamilies, is presented. Three species, Holostrophus (Paraholostrophus) orientalis Lewis, 1895 and two newly recorded species, Pisenus insignis (Reitter, 1889) and Holostrophus diversefasciatus Pic, 1921, are identified and described herein. A photograph of adults, diagnoses, illustrations of diagnostic characteristics, and ecological information regarding habitat, and host fungi are provided.

  • A taxonomic study of the tachyporine genus Tachinus Gravenhorst in Korea is presented. Five species are recognized, three of which are reported for the first time in Korea [Tachinus (Tachinoderus) nigriceps Sharp, Tachinus (Tuchinus) sharpi Bernhauer & Schubert, and Tachinus (Tachinus) yezoensis Li].   • A taxonomic review of the subtribe Astenina in Korea is presented. Five species and two genera are recognized, four species of which are recorded for the first time in Korea [Nazeris opatatus (Sharp), Astenus brevipes (Sharp), A. porosus (Sharp), and A. suffusus (Sharp)].   • Diaphanosoma dubium Manuilova, frequently confused with the species group of D. brachyurum Lieven and misidentified as an invalid species of D. leuchtenber-gianum Fischer in the Far East, was redescribed and illustrated. Redescription was based on the materials collected from various freshwater habitats at 76 localities in South Korea during the period from May 1978 to June 1999. Previous records of Diaphanosoma species from Korea were examined. D. dubium is well distinguished from other related species by having large head, longer swimming antennae with a thin seta on the outer distal side of basipod, carapace lacking dorsal spine at the posterior carapace margin, and fewer denticles on the ventro-posterior carapace margin.

  • The rotifers collected from various terrestrial habitats, such as mosses, lichens, dry detritus and temporary pools after rain were investigated. Five species and/or subspecies in two families of digonont rotifers were identified: Rotaria tardigrada, Macrotrachela quadricornifera quadricornifera, Macrotrachela quadricornifera scutellata, Adineta vaga minor, Adineta steineri. All these are new to Korean fauna. This is the first taxonomic study on the Korean digonont rotifers.

  • Taxonomic composition of marine benthic algal flora was investigated in an Antarctic bay. Specimens of chlorophyte, chrysophyte and phaeophyte were collected and examined over the period from January 1988 to January 1995 from Maxwell Bay, King George Island. A total of 19 genera and 23 species (7 chlorophytes, 1 chrysophyte and 15 phaeophytes) were identified and described. A chlorophyte Lambia antarctica (Skottsberg) Delepine and a phaeophyte Alethocladus corymbosus (Dickie) Sauvageau were recorded in Maxwell Bay for the first time. Taxonomic keys for the chlorophytes and the phaeophytes were also provided.

  • A taxonomic survey of the dinoflagellate family Dinophysiaceae Stein was conducted on 17 locations off the coast of Korea. A total of twelve species have been identified and described, of which eight species, Dinophysis dens Pavillart D. infundibulus Schiller, D. irregulare Lebour, D. lapidistrigiliformis Abe, D. mitra(Schutt) Abe vel Balech, D. parvula(Schutt) Jorgensen, D. rapa(Stein) Balech, Phalacroma sphaeroideum Schiller, are new records for Korea and six are potentially toxic.
