  • Coupled carbon-13 relaxation study of 1,1,1-trichloroethane dissolved in DMSO has been performed to gain some crucial insight into the dynamics of methyl group in this compound. For this purpose the relaxation behaviors of several observable magnetization modes for CH3 spin system generated by various perturbing pulse sequences have been carefully investigated and various dipolar spectral densities were estimated by nonlinear numerical fittings of the observed data with the relaxation curves, which were then employed to determine the three principal values for the diffusion tensor for end-over-end molecular rotation as well as internal rotational parameters of methyl group. In this process we could uniquely determine two correlation times $\tau$int(1) and $\tau$int(2) which give valuable information on internal rotor dynamics and thus obtained data were interpreted on the basis of various proposed models for internal rotation. compound undergoes three-fold jumps at 25$^{\circ}$. The fact that the ratio $\tau$int(1) / $\tau$int(2) is close to 1.0 may be interpreted as indicating that methyl group in this C.

  • Interferon tau (IFN$\tau$), the pregnancy recognition signal in ruminants, suppresses transcription of the estrogen receptor (ER) gene in the endometrial luminal (LE) and superficial glandular epithelium (sGE) to prevent oxytocin receptor (OTR) expression and pulsatile release of luteolytic prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ (PGF), Interferon regulatory factors one (IRF-l) and two (IRF-2) are transcription factors induced by IFN$\tau$ that activate and silence gene expression, respectively. Available results suggest that IFN$\tau$ acts directly on LE and sGE during pregnancy to induce sequentially IRF-l and then IRF-2 gene expression to silence transcription of ER and OTR genes, block the luteolytic mechanism to maintenance a functional corpus luteum (CL) and, signal maternal recognition of pregnancy. The theory for maternal recognition of pregnancy in pigs is that the uterine endometrium of cyclic gilts secretes PGF in an endocrine direction, toward the uterine vasculature for transport to the CL to exert its luteolytic effect. However, in pregnant pigs, estrogens secreted by the conceptuses are responsible, perhaps in concert with effects of prolactin and calcium, for exocrine secretion of PGF into the uterine lumen where it is sequestered to exert biological effects and / or be metabolized to prevent luteolysis.

  • Just noticeable differences (jnds) of autocorrelation function (ACF) parameters - Phi (0), Tau 1 and Phi 1 - of household refrigerator noise were investigated by psychoacoustical analyses. Phi (0) of five refrigerators' noise was changed with equal (${\pm}$) interval level of 0.5-1.0 dB up to five intervals by manipulating sound pressure level of the noise. Tau 1 and Phi 1 were varied with equal (${\pm}$) interval of around 0.10 ms and 0.02, respectively. Pitch shifting and strengthen methods were applied for the Tau 1 and Phi 1 variations. As results of subjective evaluations, about 2.0 dB was shown as jnd of Phi (0). The values of 0.30 ms and 0.06 were found as jnds of Tau 1 and Phi 1, respectively. The jnd results of each ACF parameter can be applied to explain substantial amount of sound quality (SQ) enhancement in the SQ prediction indices which were proposed in the authors' previous study [Sato et al. (2007) J. Acoust. Soc. Am.].

  • The maximum shear stress distribution in a stiffening flat attached to a plat undergoing a single tensile force has been investigated by photoelastic method. In the experiments a photoelastic model, as shown in Fig. 1, has been studied in the fields of a polariscope, as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the isoclinics and Fig. 4 and 5 are stress trajectories of the principal stresses and maximum shear stresses, respectively. Fig. 6 is the isochromatics in light field. The maximum shear stress at each point in the stiffener were determined from the isochromatics in both of light field of light field and dark field. Then the maximum shear stresses were divided by the average shear stress in the model, to obtain the ratio ${\tau}max/{\tau}av$ at each point. Finaly the variations of the ratio ${\tau}max/{\tau}av$ along the horizontal and vertical lines in the stiffener have been plotted, as shown in Fig. 7 and 8. The conclusions reached in this investigation are as follows: (1) The shear stresses transmitted to the stiffener through the juncture are concentrated on the end portions. (2) The maximum shear stress at the ends of the stiffener reaches to about 4 times of average shear stress. (3) The irregularities in the stress distribution are restricted in the end portions of the stiffener.

  • Linear and nonlinear complex permittivities have been measured for an alternating copolymer of vinylidene cyanide(VSCN) with vinyl propionale(VPr). It is found that the third order permittivity ${\varepsilon}_3$ depends upon frequency according to a function V ${\varepsilon}_3$/ ${1+(j{\omega}{\tau}_3)^{\beta}}^3$ while the linear permittivity ${\varepsilon}_1$obeys a Debye type function ${\nabla}{\varepsilon}_1$/ {1+$(j{\omega}{\tau}_1)^{\beta}$}. Experimental results are well fitled by predicted functions except at low frequency where dc conduction dominates. The relaxation times ${\tau}_1$ and ${\tau}_3$ at same teperature are nealy equal and depend upon temperature according to WLF form. The relaxation strengths ${\nabla}{\varepsilon}_1$ and ${\nabla}{\varepsilon}_3$ have a peak at the vicinity of glass transition temperature (Tg). The strength ${\nabla}{\varepsilon}_1$ has a value of -9 order and ${\nabla}{\varepsilon}_3$ has a negative value of -25 order. The analysis of mechanism by combined knowledge about linear and nonlinear permittivities and dipole moment gives us an imformation of the electrical and thermal dipolar motions in this copolymer.

  • Taurine is present in a variety of tissue and exhibits many important physiological functions in many tissues. Although it is known that many tissues mediate taurine transport, its functions of taurine transport in bone have not been identified yet. In the present study, we investigated the expression of taurine transporter (TauT) and taurine uptake using mouse stromal ST2 cells and osteoblast-like MC3T3-El cells, which is bone related cells. Detection of TauT mRNA expression in these cells were performed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The activity of TauT was assessed by measuring the uptake of [$^3$H]taurine in the presence or absence of inhibitors. TauT mRNA was detected in these cells. [$^3$H]Taurine uptake was dependent upon the presence of extracellular sodium, chloride and calcium ions, and inhibited by cold-taurine and ${\beta}$-alanine. These results suggest that taurine has biological functions in bone and some effect on the bone cells.

  • The electrorheological (ER) behavior of suspensions in silicone oil of phosphoric ester cellulose powder (average particle size : 18$\pm$1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) was investigated on the elevated temperature up to 10$0^{\circ}C$. For development of anhydrous ER fluids using at wide temperature range, it should be researched to how the effect of temperature on the ER activities. As a first step, the anhydrous ER suspensions mixing with the phosphoric ester cellulose particles which were made from the phosphoric ester reaction of cellulose were measured. As increasing the temperature, not only the analysis of electrical properties such as dielectric constant current density and electrical conductivity but also the rheological properties of ER fluids were studied. From the experimental results, the temperature had a large influence to the ER properties of anhydrous ER fluids. The current density, conductivity and elecoorheological effect ($\tau$$_{A}$$\tau$$_{0}$) of phosphoric ester cellulose ER fluids were proportional to the temperature with power law. And the shear stress of them was closely related with the square of dielectric constant mismatch parameter ($\beta$$^2$) under constant shear rate and electric field.d.

  • A large number of transcriptional activation domains (TADs) are intrinsically unstructured, meaning they are devoid of a three-dimensional structure. The fact that these TADs are transcriptionally active without forming a 3-D structure raises the question of what features in these domains enable them to function. One of two TADs in human glucocorticoid receptor (hGR) is located at its N-terminus and is responsible for ~70% of the transcriptional activity of hGR. This 58-residue intrinsically-disordered TAD, named tau1c in an earlier study, was shown to form three helices under trifluoroethanol, which might be important for its activity. We carried out heteronuclear multi-dimensional NMR experiments on hGR tau1c in a more physiological aqueous buffer solution and found that it forms three helices that are ~30% pre-populated. Since pre-populated helices in several TADs were shown to be key elements for transcriptional activity, the three pre-formed helices in hGR tau1c delineated in this study should be critical determinants of the transcriptional activity of hGR. The presence of pre-structured helices in hGR tau1c strongly suggests that the existence of pre-structured motifs in target-unbound TADs is a very broad phenomenon.

  • A continuous time risk model is considered, where the premium rate is constant and the claims form a compound Poisson process. We assume that an injection is made, which is an immediate increase of the surplus up to level u > 0 (initial level), when the level of the surplus goes below ${\tau}$(0 < ${\tau}$ < u). We derive the formula of the ruin probability of the surplus by establishing an integro-differential equation and show that an explicit formula for the ruin probability can be obtained when the amounts of claims independently follow an exponential distribution.

  • Resonance doublets including O VI 1032, 1038, NV 1239, 1243 and C IV 1548, 1551 constitute prominent emission lines in symbiotic stars and planetary nebulae. Spectroscopic studies of symbiotic stars and planetary nebulae from UV space telescopes show various line ratios of these doublets deviating from the theoretical ratio of 2:1. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the collisional de-excitation effect in these emission nebulae. We consider an emission nebula around the hot component of a symbiotic star characterized by the collisional de-excitation probability $p_{coll}\;{\sim}\;10^{-3}\;-\;10^{-4}$ per each resonance scattering, and the line center optical depths for major resonance doublets in the range ${\tau}_0\;{\sim}\;10^2\;-\;10^5$. We find that various line ratios are obtained when the product $p_{coll}{\tau}_0$ is of order unity. Our Monte Carlo calculations show that the flux ratio can be approximately fitted by a linear function of ${\log}{\tau}_0$ when ${\tau}_0p_{coll}\;{\sim}\;1$. It is briefly discussed that this corresponds to the range relevant to the emission nebulae of symbiotic stars.
