Task-to-Tile Binding Technique for NoC-based Manycore Platform with Multiple Memory Tiles (복수 메모리 타일을 가진 NoC 매니코어 플랫폼에서의 태스크-타일 바인딩 기술)

  • The contention overhead on the same channel in an NoC architecture can significantly increase a communication delay due to the simultaneous communication requests that occur. To reduce the overall overhead, we propose task-to-tile binding techniques for an NoC-based manycore platform, whereby it is assumed that the task mapping decision has already made. Since the NoC architecture may have multiple memory tiles as its size grows, memory clustering is used to balance the load of memory by making applications access different memory tiles. We assume that the information on the communication overhead of each application is known since it is specified in a dataflow task graph. Using this information, this paper proposes two heurisitics that perform binding of multiple tasks at once based on a proper memory clustering method. Experiments with an NoC simulator prove that the proposed heurisitic shows performance gains that are 25% greater than that of the previous binding heuristic.

Design and Implementation of Low-Power Transcoding Servers Based on Transcoding Task Distribution (트랜스코딩 작업의 분배를 활용한 저전력 트랜스코딩 서버 설계 및 구현)

  • A dynamic adaptive streaming server consumes high processor power because it handles a large amount of transcoding operations at a time. For this purpose, multi-processor architecture is mandatory for which effective transcoding task distribution strategies are essential. In this paper, we present the design and implementation details of the transcoding workload distribution schemes at a 2-tier (frontend node and backend node) transcoding server. For this, we implemented four schemes: 1) allocation of transcoding tasks to appropriate back-end nodes, 2) task scheduling in the back-end node and 3) the communication between front-end and back-end nodes. Experiments were conducted to compare the estimated and the actual power consumption in a real testbed to verify the efficacy of the system. It also proved that the system can reduce the load on each node to optimize the power and time used for transcoding.

Main Cause of the Interference between Visual Search and Spatial Working Memory Task (시각 탐색과 공간적 작업기억간 상호 간섭의 원인)

  • Oh and Kim (2004) and Woodman and Lurk (2004) demonstrated that spatial working memory (SWM) load Interfered concurrent visual search and that search process also impaired the maintenance of spatial information implying that visual search and SWM task both require access to the same limited-capacity mechanism. Two obvious possibilities have been suggested about what this shared limited-capacity mechanism is: common demand for attention to the locations where the items f9r the two tasks were presented (spatial attention load hypothesis), and common use of working memory to maintain a record of locations have been processed(SWM load hypothesis). To test these two hypothetical explanations, Experiment 1 replicated the mutual interference between visual search and SWM task in spite of difference of procedure with preceding researches; possible areas where the items for two tasks were presented were not separated. In Experiment 2, we presented the items for visual search either in the same quadrants where the items for SWM task had appeared (same-location rendition) or in the different quadrants (different-location condition). As a result, search efficiency was more impaired in the different-location condition than in the same-location condition. The memory accuracy was worse in the different-location rendition than in the same-location rendition. Overall results of study indicate that the mutual interference between SWM and visual search might be related to the overload of spatial attention, but not to that of SWM.

Efficient Task Distribution Method for Load Balancing on Clusters of Heterogeneous Workstations (이기종 워크스테이션 클러스터 상에서 부하 균형을 위한 효과적 작업 분배 방법)

  • The clustering environment with heterogeneous workstations provides the cost effectiveness and usability for executing applications in parallel. The load balancing is considered as a necessary feature for the clustering of heterogeneous workstations to minimize the turnaround time. Since each workstation may have different users, groups. requests for different tasks, and different processing power, the capability of each processing unit is relative to the others' unit in the clustering environment Previous works is a static approach which assign a predetermined weight for the processing capability of each workstation or a dynamic approach which executes a benchmark program to get relative processing capability of each workstation. The execution of the benchmark program, which has nothing to do with the application being executed, consumes the computation time and the overall turnaround time is delayed. In this paper, we present an efficient task distribution method and implementation of load balancing system for the clustering environment with heterogeneous workstations. Turnaround time of the methods presented in this paper is compared with the method without load balancing as well as with the method load balancing with performance evaluation program. The experimental results show that our methods outperform all the other methods that we compared.

  • This paper describes allocation strategies of controllable loads for load aggregator in power market with the direct load control (DLC) program, which is carried out the two-way confirmation procedure. So, it is needed to the priority among the controllable loads to perform effectively and quickly the confirmation task. In this paper, allocation strategies for market operator and/or load aggregator are proposed, which are based on the basic load patterns defined in this paper. To verify the soundness of proposed strategies. case study on a sample system is performed.

  • 현재 IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)의 SHIM6 (Site Multihoming by IPv6 Intermediation) 워킹그룹에서는 Network layer Shim (L3shim)이라는 새로운 IPv6 스택을 정의하여IPv6 환경에서 멀티호밍을 지원하는 방법에 대해 표준을 제정하고 있다. 이 Multihoming은 redundancy, load sharing과 같은 멀티호밍 장점을 지원할 수 있다. 본 논문은 이와 같이 새롭게 정의된 L3shim이 단말에 있을 경우, 단말에서 효과적인 Policy 정책을 통한 load sharing 및 balancing 통한 traffic engineering 방법을 제시한다. 현재 SHIM6 워킹그룹에서는 L3shim을 이용한 load balancing 부분은 다루고 있지 않다. 그러나 멀티호밍의 장점 줌 하나는load balancing이며 실제 load balancing이 지원 됐을 경우 응용 차원에서 많은 장점을 가질 것으로 여겨진다. 따라서 이와 관련한 메커니즘이 필요하며, 이를 위한 선행적인 연구가 필요로 되어진다.

Psychophysical and Physiological Study on Various Lifting Tasks (여러 가지 들기 작업에서의 인체심리학적 · 생리학적 연구)

  • The muscular-skeletal disorders(MSDs) that have become a major issue recently in Korean industrial safety area are mainly caused by manual material handling task. The objective of this study is to provide scientific data for the establishment of work safety standard for Korean workers through the experiments of lifting task under various conditions, in order to prevent the muscular-skeletal disorders in the industrial work site. Eight male college students were recruited as participants. Three different lifting frequencies(1, 3, 5 lifts/min) and three twisting angles(including the sagittal plane and two asymmetric angles; i.e., 0°, 45°, 90°) for symmetric and asymmetric tasks, respectively, with three lifting range from floor to knuckle height, knuckle to shoulder, floor to shoulder height for one hour's work shift using free style lifting technique were studied. The maximum acceptable weight of load(MAWL) was determined under the different task conditions, and the oxygen consumption, heart rate, and RPE were measured or recorded while subjects were lifting their MAWLs. The results showed that: (1) The MAWLs were significantly decreased as the task frequency and task angle increased.; (2) The heart rate, oxygen consumption, RPE significantly increased with an increase in lifting frequency although maximum acceptable weight of lift decreased.; (3) The highest heart rate and oxygen consumption was recorded at the lifting range of floor to shoulder, followed by floor to knuckle and knuckle to shoulder.; (4) The RPE value showed that subjects perceived more exertion at the high frequency rate of lifting task and lifting range of floor to shoulder height. (5) The modeling for MAWL using isometric strength, task angle and lifting frequency were developed. It is expected that use of the results provided in this study may prove helpful in reducing MMH hazards, especially from lifting tasks for Korean, and can be used as a basis for pre-employment screening.

An Experimental Study on Effects of Pair Programming on Task Performance : Focus on SQL Query Programming Performance (페어 프로그래밍이 직무 성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 : SQL 질의 프로그래밍 성과를 중심으로)

  • In recent years, pair programming has become a widely used approach for development of information systems. According to a worldwide survey, 35 percent of 104 development projects reported using pair programming. However, previous studies have shown rather mixed results in terms of the effectiveness of pair programming, comparing to individual or independent programming. This paper, therefore, uses a lab setting to control some of the variables that appear to have caused conflicting results in earlier studies. Writing SQL Queries for given problem statements is selected as the task the subjects to solve. One key issue addressed is the distribution of work load among the pair programmers and the independent programmers. Another is communication among co-workers as would occur in a real-world system development environment. The results of this study indicate there is no significant difference in task performance pair programming and independent programming.

  • Sawing experiments using a two-arm system have been performed in this work. The two-arm system under consideration of two kinematically-nonidentical arms. A passive joint is inserted at the end-point of one robot in order to increase the mobility up to the motion degree required for sawing tasks. A hybrid control algorithm for control of the two-arm system is designed. We experimentally show that the performance of the velocity and force response are satisfactory, and that one additional passive joint not only prevents the system from unwanted yaw motion in the sawing task, but also allows an unwanted pitch motion to be notably reduced by an internal load control. To show the general applicability of the proposed algorithms, we perform experimentation under several different conditions for saw, such as three saw blades, two sawing speeds, and two vertical forces.

  • This paper proposes an error model with integral action and a pole-place-ment self-tuning controller for robot manipulators in task coordinates. The controller can reject the offset due to any load disturbance without a detailed description of the robot dynamics. The error model parameters are estimated by the recursive least square identification algorithms, and controller parameters are determined by the pole-placement method. A computer simulation study has been conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control system in task coordinates for a 3-joint and 2-link spatial robot manipulator with payload.
