  • This study was intended to suggest the applicability of stepped boulder fishway using the concept of traditional boulder weir, focusing on the problems of existing concrete pool-and-weir fishways installed in mountain streams. To achieve this purpose, a stepped boulder fishway was designed and constructed as a pilot project in consideration of ascending capacity of the selected target fishes. Under the given discharge conditions, the hydraulic characteristics of the fishway were investigated in the field, and the characteristics and ascending capacity of the fishes were compared and analyzed. The fishway had a short length and steep slope, but the mean drops between each baffle were the range of 0.15 to 0.29 m, and this range satisfied the limit condition of about 0.40 m, which was in the limit of the drop that target fishes can ascend. The mean velocities of each baffle and pool were 0.82 to 0.87 m/sec and 0.13 to 0.24 m/sec. This result satisfied the conditions of burst speed (10 to 30 times of body length) and mean velocity of the resting pool (7 to 25% of burst speed) for target fishes. Since the bottom surface of the pool formed of boulders had a gentle reverse slope and rotational flow did not occur, the efficiency of fishway can be increased, and it will also be possible to solve the maintenance problem by flushing bed materials.

  • In this paper, position and speed control algorithm of LSM (Linear Stepping Motor) using general-purpose PCI I/O board is discussed. The main purpose of this paper is to show that LSM controller can be established on the non real time operating system such as Microsoft Win2000 under the assumption that thread priority strategy is well designed. We can guarantee sampling interval less than 5msec based on the Pentium III microprocessor. Therefore this kind of LSM controller development environment makes shorten the prior research period needed to verify the validness of the proposed control strategy. We also introduce the tool of the real-time windows target system of matlab, which also makes shorten the prior research period. The main focus of this paper is on developing general purpose NT device driver which can drive the general purpose PCI board and applying it for implementing the hardware interface for 2- axis linear stepping motor control. From the experimental results show that the developed LSM controller guarantee 2 micrometer resolution in position control with 10cm/sec moving speed

  • Characteristics of JEM(Jet Engine Modulation) are measured and principal meanings are grasped in this paper. This study's object is to measure RCS and JEM for actual aircraft, especially low speed craft. In experiment, various error are generated from unknown cause and for removal these, calibration technique known as IACT(Isolated Antenna Calibration Technique) is used. Experiment is executed at outdoor and target is T-103 which play in beginner course for ROKAF pilot. JEM spectrum of T-103 and frequency characteristics, doppler effects are extracted. X-band used in military aircraft for air-to-air fighting are selected. The data obtained through this study are analyzed to discriminate target especially low speed aircraft for current using radar(X-band)'s performance.

  • The summer polar lower thermosphere (90-100 km) has an interesting connection to meteors, adjacent to the mesopause region attaining the lowest temperature in summer. Meteors supply condensation nuclei for charged ice particles causing polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSE). We report the observation of meteor trail with nearly horizontal transit at high speed (20-50 km/s), and at last with re-enhanced echo power followed by diffusive echoes. Changes in phase difference between radar receivers aligned in meridional and zonal directions are used to determine variations in horizontal displacements and speeds with respect to time by taking advantage of radar interferometric analysis. The actual transit of echo target is observed along the straight pathway vertically and horizontally extended as much as a distance of at least 24 km and at most 29 km. The meteor trail initially has a signature similar to 'head echoes', with travel speeds from 20 - 50 km/s. It subsequently transforms into a different type of echo target including specular echo and then finally the power reenhanced. The reenhancement of echo power is followed by fume-like diffusive echoes, indicating sudden release of plasma as like explosive process probably involved. We discuss a possible role of meteor-triggered secondary plasma trail, such as fireball embedded with electrical discharge that continuously varies the power and transit speed.

  • This paper presents a two-paralleled four quadrant DC chopper type PWM power conversion circuit in order to generate a gradient magnetic field in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system. This circuit has 8-IGBTs at their inputs/outputs to realize further high-power density, high speed current tracking control, and to get a low switching ripple amplitude in a controlled current in the Gradient Coils (GCs). Moreover, the power conversion circuit has to realize quick rise/fall response characteristics in proportion to various target currents in GCs. It is proposed in this paper that a unique control scheme can achieve the above objective DSP-based control system realize a high control facility and accuracy. It is proved that the new control system will greatly enlarge the diagnostic target and improve the image quality of MRI.

  • The prediction of final mass and optimized process conditions of injection molded products using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were demonstrated. The ANN was modeled with 10 input parameters and one output parameter (mass). The input parameters, i.e.; melt temperature, mold temperature, injection speed, packing pressure, packing time, cooling time, back pressure, plastification speed, V/P switchover, and suck back were selected. To generate training data for the ANN model, 77 experiments based on the combination of orthogonal sampling and random sampling were performed. The collected training data were normalized to eliminate scale differences between factors to improve the prediction performance of the ANN model. Grid search and random search method were used to find the optimized hyper-parameter of the ANN model. After the training of ANN model, optimized process conditions that satisfied the target mass of 41.14 g were predicted. The predicted process conditions were verified through actual injection molding experiments. Through the verification, it was found that the average deviation in the optimized conditions was 0.15±0.07 g. This value confirms that our proposed procedure can successfully predict the optimized process conditions for the target mass of injection molded products.

  • This research presents a novel application of static traffic assignment methods, but with a variable time value, for estimating the market share of a high-speed rail (HSR) in the NW-SE corridor of Korea which is currently served by the airline (AR), conventional rail (CR), and highway (HWY) modes. The proposed model employs the time-space network structure to capture the interrelations among all competing transportation modes, and to reflect their supply- and demand-sides constraints as well as interactions through properly formulated link-node structures. The embedded cost function for each network link offers the flexibility for incorporating all associated factors, such as travel time and fare, in the model computation, and enables the use of a distribution rather than a constant to represent the time-value variation among all transportation mode users. To realistically capture the tripmakers' value-of-time (VOT) along the target area, a novel method for VOT calibration has been developed with aggregate demand information and key system performance data from the target area. Under the assumption that intercity tripmakers often have nearly "perfect" travel information, one can solve the market share of each mode after operations of HSR for each O-D pair under the time-dependent demand with state-of-the-art traffic assignment. Aside from estimating new market share, this paper also investigated the impacts of HSR on other existing transportation modes.

  • Not merely running at the designated constant speed as the classical cruise control, the adaptive cruise control (ACC) maintains safe headway distance when the front is blocked by other vehicles. One of the most essential part of ACC System is the range sensor which can measure the position and speed of all objects in front continuously, ignore all irrelevant objects, distinguish vehicles in different lanes and lock on to the closest vehicle in the same lane. In this paper, the hierarchical object recognition algorithm (HORA) is proposed to process raw scanning laser data and acquire valid distance to target vehicle. HORA contains two principal concepts. First, the concept of life quantifies the reliability of range data to filter off the spurious detection and preserve the missing target position. Second, the concept of conformation checks the mobility of each obstacle and tracks the position shift. To estimate and predict the vehicle position Kalman filter is used. Repeatedly updated covariance matrix determines the bound of valid data. The algorithm is emulated on computer and tested on-line with our ACC vehicle.

  • This paper proposes a method to measure the airburst height by utilizing a high speed camera. This method might be applied to the test of which flight target is alive after the burst. The proposed method consists of four main steps. The first step is to compute the impact point using the sea surface height. The second step is to compute the height of burst (HOB) by using the distance from the camera to the impact point. This could be different from the real explosion height. That is because the distance from the camera to the burst point is not the same as it from the camera to the impact point. Therefore, the third step is to calculate the approach angle of the flight target with respect to the installed camera. Then, the last step is to compensate the computed height by using the approach angle. The result of the proposed method is compared with it from the triangulation. In this paper, the HOB error is also analyzed regarding the approach angle difference. Based on this analysis, the camera position might be suggested for error reduction.

  • The coordination control of multiple Underactuated Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) moving in three dimensional space is investigated in this paper. The coordinated path following control task is decomposed into two sub tasks, that is, path following control and coordination control. In the spatial curve path following control task, path following error dynamics is build in the Serret-Frenet coordinate frame. The virtual reference object can be chosen freely on the desired spatial path. Considering the speed of the UUV, the line-of-sight navigation is introduced to help the path following errors quickly converge to zero. In the coordination control sub task, the communication topology of multiple UUVs is described by the graph theory. The speed of each UUV is adjusted to achieve the coordination. The path following system and the coordination control system are viewed as the feedback connection system. Input-to-state stable of the coordinated path following system can be proved by small gain theorem. The simulation experiments can further demonstrate the good performance of the control method.
