  • Tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) utilizes the dynamic response of a resonating probe tip as it approaches and retracts from a sample to measure the topography and material properties of a nanostructure. We present recent results based on numerical techniques that yield new perspectives and insight into AFM. It is compared that the dynamic models including van der Waals and Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov(DMT) or Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) contact forces demonstrates that periodic solutions can be represented with respect to the approach distance and excitation frequency.

  • As remodeling market is growing and peoples' concern on health and well-being is getting high, there is a need to apply environmentally friendly approach to remodeling an apartment houses. But, in point of the impact noise concerned, the thickness of the concrete slab and the limited ceiling height of the remodelling houses are the main constraints to improve the impact noise performance. In order to investigate the effect of the impact noise isolation as structural treatments for the structural elements, heavy-weight impact noise and tapping noise were measured in an remodeling building. As a result, structural strengthening method by H-beam was successful to enhance the impact noise level at about 3 or 4 class by the sound classification system.

  • The measurement of floor impact sound have been standardized in KS 2810-1 and 2. The height of receiving microphones position is specified in the standard as 1.2m which is almost half height of apartment rooms as a listening position. In this study, receiving positions are investigated by measuring the distribution of sound pressure levels at 792 receiving microphone positions in the standard testing building. Standard impact sources, tapping machine and impact ball, are driven on the center position in the source room where is located at the above floor. It was found that the distribution of sound pressure levels in the receiving room indicates significant deviation at different frequencies there is more than 5dB drop at 63Hz but 2dB rise at 125Hz at a height of 1.2m when the impact ball is driven, in the other case of a generating tapping machine there is more than 2dB rise at 125Hz at a height of 1.2m due to room modes.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for suppressing acoustic noises contained in stethoscope sound is proposed and implemented in real-time using an embedded DSP system. Sound collected by stethoscope is down-sampled and band-pass filtered, and later an NLMS adaptive filter is used to cancel the acoustic noise induced from external noise sources. Also, the unpredictable impulsive noises due to fabric friction and instantaneous tapping are detected using the SD-ROM algorithm, and suppressed using an algorithm approximating the morphology filter. The proposed algorithm was tested using signals collected with a digital stethoscope mockup, and implemented on an ARM920T-based DSP system.

  • Floor impact noise has been evaluated by investigating the temporal and spectral characteristics of the noise. The noises generated by different impactors were analyzed to find out whether there is any correlation with the factors of ACF /IACF (Autocorrelation Function/Inter-aural Cross-correlation Function) [1] and Zwicker parameters [2]. Experiments were undertaken to compare the objective and subjective parameters of the floor impact noises generated by a bang/tapping machine, a rubber ball [3], and a walker. As a result, it was found that $\phi$ (0) and IACC extracted from ACF/IACF, and Loudness, Unbiased Annoyance from Zwicker parameters showed high correlation with subjective evaluations of loudness concerning floor impact noises. In addition, it was revealed that jumping is similar to the ball.

  • Cause and the elimination method for the chattering phenomena were investigated the check valve attached exit of the auxiliary cooling water pump at a korean nuclear powerplant. From the site experiment and numerical calculation the incident angle of the disk was so small that it was not able to produce the lifting force to overcome the component of disk weight. Moreover, it turned out that the installed position was not symmetric for the secondary vortical flow generated inside the elbow, so that the flow structure had strongly unstable flow characteristics. From this technical support, the tapping noise and the chattering phenomena were eliminated exactly by changing the incidence angle of the valve disk and installed position of the check valve.

  • Floor finishing materials such as floor coverings and floor mats can reduce floor impact noise easily. When an impact was applied to the floor, its finishing material is deformed and the impact force that was applied to the concrete slab is changed. The softer finishing materials were, the more impact force decreased. An experimental study was performed using 14 PVC floor coverings and 16 floor mats to capture the characteristics of impact force and impact noise in the residential buildings. The test results show that the impact force spectrum and the floor impact noise spectrum have a linear relationship in the case of a bare concrete slab, and the characteristics of impact force reduction are the same as those of floor impact noise reduction.

  • Psycho-acoustic experiments were carried out to know the inhabitant's response on floor impact noises due to floor structure types. The response values for tapping machine, bang machine and impact ball were 4.4~6.06. And children walking and adult walking were 1.67~2.97. Using 11 scale response tests, children and adult walking was not irritate to dwellers and children running was disturbing.

  • In this paper, noise and vibration reduction for floating-floored ship cabin is studied. A mock-up is built by using 6 mm steel plate, and two identical cabins are made for simulation of ship cabins. When a speaker is used as a sound and vibration sources, it is shown that floating floor is more effective in isolating sound than bare deck by 2-5 dB. It is also shown that structure-borne noise of the bare deck is greater than that of floating-floored deck by 3-10 dB. For tapping machine excitation, it is found that the effect of floating floor in airborne noise and structure-borne noise reduction reaches up to 40-50 dB for high frequency ranges.
