  • This Paper describes a detailed experimental investigation of heat transfer in a reciprocating smooth rectangular duct having only the bottom wall heated with reference to the design of a piston for a marine propulsive diesel engine The Parametric test matrix involves Reynolds number and reciprocating radius, respectively, in the range of 1.280∼4.100, and 7∼15 cm with five different reciprocating frequency tested. namely. 1.7, 2.2, and 2.6 Hz. The effects of three different hemi-triangular wavy type tapers on the heat transfer in the reciprocating rectangular channel using the air as a working fluid were check out. The present work confirms that the Nusselt number in the channel with the triangular wavy type taper is lower than without the triangular wavy type taper.

  • We created a new design for an Nd-doped clad-pumped silica fiber laser to enhance the pump absorption and lasing efficiency for a butt-coupled, end-pumped scheme. Two concatenated adiabatic tapers formed within the laser cavity simultaneously removed higher order modes and were spliced to conventional single mode fibers. We theoretically analyzed mode propagation along the composite cavity and experimentally achieved continuous wave oscillation in the $LP_{01}$ mode at $1.06\;{\mu}m$ and a laser output power of over 820 mW with a slope efficiency of 27%.

  • When the current flows to parallel lines with different length, it is researched that the radiation is occured by the common-mode current radiates, and the small light weight antenna composed of dual elements by using the principle is proposed. However, there is a problem in production about this antenna because this liner antenna is structured by combining with wires. In this paper, we improved this liner antenna, and designed the plane antenna composed of dual elements with different length in the plane printed board to produce and to design easily. Furthermore, the antenna with the wide-band characteristic is also designed in the same board. The radiation pattern is similar to the dipole antenna on account of designing the triangular patch S, the notch and two tapers in patch S, the notch and two tapers in the antenna element. In result, it was able to design the antenna working wider band-width(the bandwidth ratio about 58%, $VSWR{\le}2$).

  • Cylindrical turbine guide bearings (TGBs) with simple plain pads have conventionally been used in vertical hydro-power turbine-generator applications in order to provide turbine runner shafts with smooth rotation guides and supports. To overcome low-load/low-eccentricity performance drawbacks, such as very low film stiffness and lack of design credibility in the stiffness values themselves, of conventional cylindrical TGBs, the introduction of a rotational-directional leading-edge taper to each partitioned pad, simply pad leading-edge taper, has been found to be very effective in enhancing their design-application availability and usefulness. In this study, we investigate the effects of taper angle and length for given taper heights in detail in order to systematically establish the effectiveness of design on the performance improvement of vertical hydro-power application cylindrical TGBs with pad leading-edge tapers. The analysis results with $4-Pad{\times}1-Row$ cylindrical TGBs show that the lubrication performance of the cylindrical TGBs is optimized with an approximate taper angle ratio of 0.8 and taper length ratio of 0.9. We conclude that the introduction of pad leading-edge tapers along with the optimization of taper designs can be very effective in improving the overall operation reliability of cylindrical TGBs and the rotordynamic characteristics of vertical hydro-power turbine-generator rotor-bearing systems as well, to which the TGBs are applied.

  • In this study we report a wet-etching-based fabrication method for adiabatic optical-fiber tapers (OFTs), and describe their adiabaticity and HE11 mode evolution at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The profile of the fabricated system satisfies the adiabaticity properties well, and the far-field pattern from the etched OFT shows that the fundamental HE11 mode is maintained without a higher-order mode coupling throughout the tapers. In addition, the measured far-field pattern agrees well with the simulated result. The proposed adiabatic OFTs can be applied to a number of photonic applications, especially fiber-chip packages. Based on the fabricated adiabatic OFT structures, the optical transmission to the inversely tapered silicon waveguide shows large spatial-dimensional tolerances for 1 dB excess loss of ~60 ㎛ (silicon waveguide angle of 1°) and insertion loss of less than 0.4 dB (silicon waveguide angle of 4°), from the numerical simulation. The proposed adiabatic coupler shows the ultrabroadband coupling efficiency over the O- and C-bands.

  • In vertical hydro/hydraulic power turbine-generator applications, traditionally, cylindrical turbine guide bearings (TGBs) are widely used to provide turbine runner shafts with smooth rotation guides and supports. All existing cylindrical TGBs with simple plain pads have drawbacks such as having no pressure generation and film stiffness at the no-load condition and in addition, at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition, having very low film stiffness values and lacking design credibility in the stiffness values themselves. In this paper, in order to fundamentally improve the low-load/low-eccentricity performance of conventional cylindrical TGBs and thus enhance their design-application availability and usefulness, we propose to introduce a rotation-directional leading-edge taper to each partitioned pad, i.e., a pad leading-edge taper. We perform a design analysis of lubrication performance on $4-Pad{\times}4-Row$ cylindrical TGBs to verify an engineering/technical usefulness of the proposed pad leading-edge taper. Analysis results show that by introducing the leading-edge taper to each pad of the cylindrical TGB one can expect a constant high average direct stiffness with a high degree of design credibility, regardless of load value, even at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition and also control the average direct stiffness value by exploring the taper height as a design parameter. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed pad leading-edge tapers are greatly effective in more accurately predicting and controlling rotordynamic characteristics of vertical hydro-power turbine-generator rotor-bearing systems to which cylindrical TGBs are applied.

  • In this paper, metal insulator metal (MIM) plasmonic slot cavity narrow band-pass filters (NBPFs) are studied. The metal and dielectric of the structures are silver (Ag) and air, respectively. To improve the quality factor and attenuation range, two novel NBPFs based on tapered structures and double cavity systems are proposed and numerically analyzed by using the two-dimensional (2-D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The impact of different parameters on the transmission spectrum is scrutinized. We have shown that increasing the cavities' lengths increases the resonance wavelength in a linear relationship, and also increases the quality factor, and simultaneously the attenuation of the wave transmitted through the cavities. Furthermore, increasing the slope of tapers of the input and output waveguides decreases attenuation of the wave transmitted through the waveguide, but simultaneously decreases the quality factor, hence there should be a trade-off between loss and quality factor. However, the idea of adding tapers to the waveguides' discontinuities of the simple structure helps us to improve the device total performance, such as quality factor for the single cavity and attenuation range for the double cavity. According to the proposed NBPFs, two, three, and four-port power splitters functioning at 1320 nm and novel ultra-compact two-wavelength and triple-wavelength demultiplexers in the range of 1300-1550 nm are proposed and the impacts of different parameters on their performances are numerically investigated. The idea of using tapered waveguides at the structure discontinuities facilitates the design of ultra-compact demultiplexers and splitters.

  • A ranked set sample version of the sign test is proposed for testing hypotheses concerning the quantiles of a population characteristic by Kaur, et. al(2002). In this paper, we proposed the ranked set sample Wilcoxon signed rank test for quantiles under equal allocation. We obtain the asymptotic property and the asymptotic relative efficiencies of the proposed test statistic with respect to Wilcoxon signed rank test of simple random sample for quantiles under equal allocation. We calculate the ARE of test statistics, the proposed test statistic is more efficient than simple random sampling for all quantiles. The relative advantage of ranked set sampling is greatest at the median and tapers off in the tails.

  • For a parabolic reflector antenna, a simple method is presented for computing efficiently the average power pattern degradations caused by the surface roughness of the reflector and misalignments between the reflector and the feed. In this procedure, both nonuniform surface errors and nonuniform illuminations are employed. The assumptions to derive the expressions are that in each annular region of the antenna, the rms value of the surface roughness is known, and in a zone in a annular region, the phase error by misalignments is constant, and can be taken to its value at the center of the zone. Detailed parametric studies are performed with derived expressions to determine the effects of those errors and illumination tapers on parameters such as gain and sidelobe levels.

  • Numerical methods are developed for solving the elastica and buckling load of cantilever column with constant volume, subjected to a compressive end load. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers with the regular polygon cross-sections are considered, whose material volume and span length are always held constant. The differential equations governing the elastica of buckled column are derived. The Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the Regula-Falsi method is used to determine the horizontal deflection at free end and the buckling load, respectively. The numerical methods developed herein for computing the elastica and the buckling loads of the columns are found to be efficient and reliable.
