  • Suppose that M is a strictly convex hypersurface in the (n + 1)-dimensional Euclidean space 𝔼n+1 with the origin o in its convex side and with the outward unit normal N. For a fixed point p ∈ M and a positive constant t, we put 𝚽t the hyperplane parallel to the tangent hyperplane 𝚽 at p and passing through the point q = p - tN(p). We consider the region cut from M by the parallel hyperplane 𝚽t, and denote by Ip(t) the (n + 1)-dimensional volume of the convex hull of the region and the origin o. Then Schneider's characterization theorem for ellipsoids states that among centrally symmetric, strictly convex and closed surfaces in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space 𝔼3, the ellipsoids are the only ones satisfying Ip(t) = 𝜙(p)t, where 𝜙 is a function defined on M. Recently, the characterization theorem was extended to centrally symmetric, strictly convex and closed hypersurfaces in 𝔼n+1 satisfying for a constant 𝛽, Ip(t) = 𝜙(p)t𝛽. In this paper, we study the volume Ip(t) of a strictly convex and complete hypersurface in 𝔼n+1 with the origin o in its convex side. As a result, first of all we extend the characterization theorem to strictly convex and closed (not necessarily centrally symmetric) hypersurfaces in 𝔼n+1 satisfying Ip(t) = 𝜙(p)t𝛽. After that we generalize the characterization theorem to strictly convex and complete (not necessarily closed) hypersurfaces in 𝔼n+1 satisfying Ip(t) = 𝜙(p)t𝛽.

  • The electron transport properties of Y-type zigzag branched carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of great significance for micro and nano carbon-based electronic devices and their interconnection. Based on the semi-empirical method combining tight-binding density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function, the electron transport properties between the branches of Y-type zigzag branched CNT are studied. The results show that the drain-source current of semiconducting Y-type zigzag branched CNT (8, 0)-(4, 0)-(4, 0) is cut-off and not affected by the gate voltage in a bias voltage range [-0.5 V, 0.5 V]. The current presents a nonlinear change in a bias voltage range [-1.5 V, -0.5 V] and [0.5 V, 1.5 V]. The tangent slope of the current-voltage curve can be changed by the gate voltage to realize the regulation of the current. The regulation effect under negative bias voltage is more significant. For the larger diameter semiconducting Y-type zigzag branched CNT (10, 0)-(5, 0)-(5, 0), only the value of drain-source current increases due to the larger diameter. For metallic Y-type zigzag branched CNT (12, 0)-(6, 0)-(6, 0), the drain-source current presents a linear change in a bias voltage range [-1.5 V, 1.5 V] and is symmetrical about (0, 0). The slope of current-voltage line can be changed by the gate voltage to realize the regulation of the current. For three kinds of Y-type zigzag branched CNT with different diameters and different conductivity, the current-voltage curve trend changes from decline to rise when the branch of drain-source is exchanged. The current regulation effect of semiconducting Y-type zigzag branched CNT under negative bias voltage is also more significant.

  • In this paper, a microstrip patch sensor antenna (MPSA) for detecting the concentration of an ethanol-water solution in a microliter volume is proposed. A rectangular slot was added at the radiating edge of the patch to increase the sensitivity to the relative permittivity change. To improve a low input resistance caused by placing an ethanol-water solution, which is a polar liquid with high dielectric constant and high loss tangent, on the patch, a quarter-wave impedance transformer was added between the 50-ohm feedline and the patch, and the MPSA was fabricated on a 0.76 mm-thick RF-35 substrate. A cylindrical container was made of acryl, and 15 microliters of the ethanol-water solution was tested from 0% to 100% of ethanol concentration at 20% intervals. Experiment results show that the resonant frequency increased from 1.947 GHz to 2.509 GHz when the ethanol concentration of the ethanol-water solution was increased from 0% to 100%, demonstrating the performance as a concentration detecting sensor.

  • Purpose: The prevalent use of mobile devices may contribute to musculoskeletal disorders, such as forward head posture (FHP), among users. The measurement of the craniovertebral angle (CVA) using photographic images is frequently employed in assessing FHP. Although manual CVA measurement using photographic images is reliable in clinical settings, computer programs or mobile applications to support tele-physical therapy are not yet fully developed. Therefore, in the current study, we propose an automatic method for extracting CVA from photographic images of FHP subjects to facilitate tele-physical therapy. Methods: To develop the automatic CVA measuring computer program, photographic images were obtained from 10 FHP participants. The location information obtained from the markers attached to the tragus and the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra were used as coordinates. Using these coordinates, straight line 1 was generated by connecting the seventh spinous process of the cervical vertebra and the tragus, while straight line 2 was drawn parallel to the coordinate obtained from the seventh spinous process of the cervical vertebra. The arc tangent function was used to calculate the angle between the two straight lines. The automatic CVA measurement computer program utilizing photographic images was developed using MATLAB (ver. 2016b). Results: The results showed that the automatic CVA measurement computer program demonstrated stable repeatability and high accuracy. Conclusion: The proposed approach was able to automatically estimate the CVA using photographic images. The developed computer program can potentially be used for easier and more reliable clinical assessment of FHP.

  • Cast austenitic stainless steels (CASS) and austenitic stainless steel weldments with a ferrite-austenite duplex structure are widely used in nuclear power plants, incorporating ferrite phase to enhance strength, stress relief, and corrosion resistance. Thermal aging at 290-325℃ can induce embrittlement, primarily due to spinodal decomposition and G-phase precipitation in the ferrite phase. This study evaluates the effects of thermal aging by collecting and analyzing various mechanical properties, such as Charpy impact energy, ferrite microhardness, and tensile strength, from various literature sources. Different model expressions, including hyperbolic tangent and phase transformation equations, are applied to calculate activation energy (Q) of room-temperature impact energies, and the results are compared. Additionally, predictive models for Q based on material composition are evaluated, and the potential of machine learning techniques for improving prediction accuracy is explored. The study also examines the use of ferrite microhardness and tensile strength in calculating Q and assessing thermal embrittlement. The findings provide insights for developing advanced prediction models for the thermal embrittlement behavior of CASS and the weldments of austenitic steels, contributing to the safety and reliability of nuclear power plant components.

  • Recent radiotherapy dose planning system (RTPS) generally adapted the kernel beam using the convolution method for computation of tissue dose. To get a depth and profile dose in a given depth concerened a given photon beam, the energy spectrum was reconstructed from the attenuation dose of transmission of filter through iterative numerical analysis. The experiments were performed with 15 MV X rays (Oncor, Siemens) and ionization chamber (0.125 cc, PTW) for measurements of filter transmitted dose. The energy spectrum of 15MV X-rays was determined from attenuated dose of lead filter transmission from 0.51 cm to 8.04 cm with energy interval 0.25 MeV. In the results, the peak flux revealed at 3.75 MeV and mean energy of 15 MV X rays was 4.639 MeV in this experiments. The results of transmitted dose of lead filter showed within 0.6% in average but maximum 2.5% discrepancy in a 5 cm thickness of lead filter. Since the tissue dose is highly depend on the its energy, the lateral dose are delivered from the lateral spread of energy fluence through flattening filter shape as tangent 0.075 and 0.125 which showed 4.211 MeV and 3.906 MeV. In this experiments, analyzed the energy spectrum has applied to obtain the percent depth dose of RTPS (XiO, Version 4.3.1, CMS). The generated percent depth dose from $6{\times}6cm^2$ of field to $30{\times}30cm^2$ showed very close to that of experimental measurement within 1 % discrepancy in average. The computed dose profile were within 1% discrepancy to measurement in field size $10{\times}10cm$, however, the large field sizes were obtained within 2% uncertainty. The resulting algorithm produced x-ray spectrum that match both quality and quantity with small discrepancy in this experiments.

  • Purpose: Unpredictable shrinkage of zirconia during sintering process causes discrepancy. Therefore, there have been attempts to reduce discrepancy by milling zirconia after sintering. However, due to the hardness of sintered zirconia, milling takes longer time, causes damage to the machine and causes chip formation. With customized zirconia block using the mean dimension of prepared natural dentition, it is expected to overcome these shortcomings. Materials and methods: The mean dimension of prepared natural dentition was analyzed as STL file after scanning of prepared teeth treated at SNUDH. The transverse, frontal and sagittal planes were set using Mimics and Photoshop. 3D volume was projected on each plane, and the outer line was measured through external tangent line, and the inner line was measured through inflection point of tangent line. Results: The mean height of prepared incisal (N = 57) is $6.60{\pm}1.05mm$, mesiodistal length is $2.98{\pm}0.73mm$, buccolingual length is $2.04{\pm}0.73mm$. The mean height of prepared premolar (N = 15) is $5.37{\pm}1.49mm$, mesiodistal length is $4.10{\pm}1.78mm$, buccolingual length is $5.86{\pm}1.55mm$. And the mean height of prepared molar (N = 13) is $5.11{\pm}1.29mm$, mesiodistal length is $6.80{\pm}1.18mm$, buccolingual length is $7.34{\pm}1.40mm$. Conclusion: Using the mean dimension of prepared natural dentition, it is expected to be able to fabricate customized zirconia block.

  • Purpose: Not much is known about the obvious relationship between posteroinferior rotator cuff tear and biceps lesion. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of posteroinferior rotator cuff tear on a biceps lesions by comparing the rotator cuff tear and biceps lesions with the number of cuff tears and the degree of degeneration of the rotator cuff. Materials and Methods: 65 patients who underwent surgery for a posteroinferior rotator cuff tear from 2002 to 2009 were included as subjects. The study determined the factors (the number of cuff tears and the degree of degeneration as assessed by MRI) that affected biceps lesions and the kinematic stability of the rotator cuff. Results: Biceps lesion was noted 11 patients among the 51 patients with supraspinatus tendon tears and in 8 patients among the 14 patients with supraspinatus, infraspinatus or teres minor tendon tears, and there was a statistically significant difference between those two groups (p=0.0095). The number of cuff tears was proportional to biceps lesion with statistical significance (p=0.0095). Among the biceps lesions, SLAP II lesion showed a statistically different distribution according to the number of cuff tears (p=0.0073). The degeneration factors (Goutallier's classification and the tangent sign) had no correlations with biceps lesion. Conclusion: Posterosuperior cuff tear may affect biceps lesion. Especially, the number of cuff tears has a close relationship, but the degenerative indicators have no relationship with biceps lesion.

  • Recently, as the occurrence frequency of sudden floods due to climate change increased, the flood damage on riverside social infrastructures was extended so that there has been a threat of overflow. Therefore, a rapid prediction of potential flooding in riverside social infrastructure is necessary for administrators. However, most current flood forecasting models including hydraulic model have limitations which are the high accuracy of numerical results but longer simulation time. To alleviate such limitation, data driven models using artificial neural network have been widely used. However, there is a limitation that the existing models can not consider the time-series parameters. In this study the water surface elevation of the Hangang River bridge was predicted using the NARX model considering the time-series parameter. And the results of the ANN and RNN models are compared with the NARX model to determine the suitability of NARX model. Using the 10-year hydrological data from 2009 to 2018, 70% of the hydrological data were used for learning and 15% was used for testing and evaluation respectively. As a result of predicting the water surface elevation after 3 hours from the Hangang River bridge in 2018, the ANN, RNN and NARX models for RMSE were 0.20 m, 0.11 m, and 0.09 m, respectively, and 0.12 m, 0.06 m, and 0.05 m for MAE, and 1.56 m, 0.55 m and 0.10 m for peak errors respectively. By analyzing the error of the prediction results considering the time-series parameters, the NARX model is most suitable for predicting water surface elevation. This is because the NARX model can learn the trend of the time series data and also can derive the accurate prediction value even in the high water surface elevation prediction by using the hyperbolic tangent and Rectified Linear Unit function as an activation function. However, the NARX model has a limit to generate a vanishing gradient as the sequence length becomes longer. In the future, the accuracy of the water surface elevation prediction will be examined by using the LSTM model.

  • Finite element analysis is to approximate a geometry model developed in computer-aided design(CAD) to a finite element model, thus the conventional shape design sensitivity analysis and optimization using the finite element method have some difficulties in the parameterization of geometry. However, isogeometric analysis is to build a geometry model and directly use the functions describing the geometry in analysis. Therefore, the geometric properties can be embedded in the NURBS basis functions and control points so that it has potential capability to overcome the aforementioned difficulties. In this study, the isogeometric structural analysis and shape design sensitivity analysis in the generalized curvilinear coordinate(GCC) systems are discussed for the curved geometry. Representing the higher order geometric information, such as normal, tangent and curvature, yields the isogeometric approach to be the best way for generating exact GCC systems from a given CAD geometry. The developed GCC isogeometric structural analysis and shape design sensitivity analysis are verified to show better accuracy and faster convergency by comparing with the results obtained from the conventional isogeometric method.
